Iron Banner without Mountaintop is a good change of pace

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:41 AM PST

It's pretty much all in the title. As sweaty as IB usually is, I haven't been killed by MT once. Despite sunsetting's many pitfalls, this part worked out extraordinarily well for PvP.

Bungie, Overload Champions are not difficult. They're annoying.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:51 PM PST

Combine that with the fact that you have a higher RNG drop chance for an exotic world drop than getting Overload on Auto's to proc(Dont even get me started on Scouts & Overload champions last millisecond teleport), and you get... You guessed it! Not challenging, nor difficult enemies. But the biggest pain in the ass enemy one can come up with.

Seriously, Overload mods just needs to be the entire mag. Im sick of not getting overload to proc until im down to 5 bullets with 2 HP remaining because RNG, then getting one-shot in the back by some random useless enemy when it decided to proc on ONE shot in the mag.

I can't wait for Felwinter's Lie to enter the tower kiosk...

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 08:29 PM PST

...so bad players can use the gun and realize that they're still bad.

Now that my inflammatory statement is out of the way, let's get into the meat of my post. The top comment thread in the top post on this sub (praising the lack of Mountaintop in Iron Banner) suggests that Felwinters is the new Mountaintop. With all due respect, that's one of the worst takes I've ever heard.

Before diving in, let's settle the facts - Felwinter's Lie is an amazing shotgun. Shot Package makes it an aggressive frame shotgun with insane consistency. Full Choke, Accurized Rounds, Quickdraw, and Opening Shot constitute the quintessential god roll for a PvP shotgun. And it even has Vorpal Weapon for hotswapping to enable super shutdowns (maybe just on PC). But it doesn't deserve all the hate that it gets.

    1) It's still a shotgun

Shotguns have historically gotten the most hate out of all specials, even when Mountaintop was still in its most broken state. It's regarded as a no-skill weapon that anyone can do well with. And that's certainly true to an extent. But the fact of the matter is that it's also really easy to play against shotguns using other tools that Destiny gives players - radar, vertical play, and now stasis. There's a reason why top tier shotgunners (I'm talking Trials flawless regulars and better, based on my own experience as a Trials flawless regular) main their primary first and foremost - unlike snipers, you can't win a match with shotguns only. Top players use shotguns as a cleanup or defensive tool, and rarely have a shotgun out prior to an engagement except when pushing a preoccupied target. Fortunately for the vast majority of crucible players, your average quickplay shotgunner is a sliding ape who doesn't know what a primary is. Shotgun aping might have a low skill floor, but shutting down a shotgun ape doesn't demand much more skill either.

    2) It's not a significant outlier compared to other shotguns

Felwinter's Lie consistent OHK range is 8.5m, not 10+ as people like to think. (It's also far less than shotgun OHK range in Forsaken, if case people have forgotten). This range is easily achievable by a god roll Astral Horizon or Mindbender's Ambition (outside of Trials/IB, which is where most players play anyway). The strength of Felwinter's is its consistency - if someone is 8.5m in front of you and you have your Felwinter's Lie ADS'd center mass, you'll get the kill 99% of the time. Now it seems like a lot of people dislike how consistent it is - "shotguns need rng to be balanced". I ask, why? On one hand, you have a shotgun that'll kill you every time at 8.5m but no more. On the other hand, you have a shotgun that might leave you at half health at 8m, but might also OHK you at 9.5m. I know which one I'd prefer to play against. Learn your 8.5m distance like the back of your hand and you'll be golden, considering that the average quickplay shotgunner mentioned above doesn't know that distance themselves.

    So what's the takeaway?

It's a good thing that Bungie is making this shotgun reobtainable to level the playing field. And it's a good thing that this shotgun is more consistent than others, because less RNG = better PvP.

But it won't suddenly make you a great player. It won't make it any easier for you to mindlessly ape players who know what they're doing. And what many of you probably care most about - it won't ruin your crucible experience. Because while you will see more Felwinter's Lie in your kill feed, most of the time you would've been killed by another shotgun anyway. The players who can actually take advantage of the added consistency between 7.5m - 8.5m are extremely uncommon in quickplay.

As an addendum, I do wish Bungie would introduce a top tier energy 140, either exotic or legendary. I personally prefer my Astral Horizon because the ADS sights are a more accurate representation of where the spread will go on average, and my roll has Rifled Barrel which means I do not need to be fully ADS to take advantage. Granted, I am one of the lucky few to roll Rifled Barrel + Accurized Rounds + Quickdraw + Opening Shot + Range MW. But without that same luck on a Nation of Beasts or Ancient Gospel for PvP, I am stuck using my JQK3 which will sunset at the end of this season. Ultimately, the solution to the oversaturation of Felwinter's Lie (and other meta weapons) is new loot in competitive archetypes/slots.

    TL;DR

Felwinter's Lie is an amazing shotgun, but it doesn't break the game. It's still a shotgun, and the majority of its users are one-dimensional and easy to shut down. It's strength lies in its consistency, which is a good thing for everyone. And making it reobtainable further reduces RNG in PvP, which levels the playing field.

There should be some type of reward for killing wanted enemies in strikes.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:56 AM PST

Right now they're just tanky enemies that everyone runs past. I think it would be a nice to add some type of reward for killing them like an extra drop at the end of the strike or a guaranteed legendary weapon. Stuff like that would be a really nice addition imo.

You guys remember the lake on IO? Man, that place was AWESOME

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:12 AM PST

I sure do miss that space, sucks that they removed it and put it into the DCV. It's a shame that newer guardians will never get to experience the greatest social space to ever exist in the history of the Destiny franchise.

Bungie Could You just Buff rockets already? ....Generally in PvE ?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:13 PM PST

i just find it crazy how any sword can out DPS a rocket launcher let alone DSC rocket that's hard enough to get , lets just say i finally got one and i'm not impressed .. this rocket seriously takes a dive for any "named boss" even with the maximum amount of buffs we can throw at it.. this Seriously needs to change .. not just for (eyes of tomorrow) underperforming seriously bad.. but majority of rockets get tossed out the window..

These guys are the OG's in the E15 lost sector. They're like a tactical militia with their flanks and stuff.

Edit: Thanks for the awards. These little guys helped me get the mask of bakris and dawn chorus last night. Just wanted them to know they are appreciated.

Gotta say it again, all exotics should automatically be masterworked. Catalysts should be something separate.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 06:27 PM PST

It just feels weird using exotic weapons that aren't masterworked and don't have that gold border around them. Maybe it's my OCD, but I notice it every time. Also, kill counters are fun. Bungie please?

Edit: All exotic WEAPONS I meant. Armor can stick to the old way of masterworking.

The speed with which Bungie have been able to nerf, then partially unnerf warlock melee is impressive and bodes well

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 01:34 AM PST

Title really. It was clearly overtuned, so got nerfed, then undertuned, so is getting buffed. It hasn't taken them very long, so I'm hopeful that this is a sign that the new game build method will allow them to be more responsive to feedback. Nerfs become a lot less oppressive in a world where Bungie are able to row back on them when they overdo it (or row further if they underdo it!).

Well done Bungie (please look at warlock void mid tree though!)

I'm disappointed that the only stasis weapon we got, was a gimmick gun.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 01:26 PM PST

It literally just shoots stasis crystals...yay. What makes this even more odd is that I expected since stasis is a new element we'd have enemies with stasis shields. Perhaps stasis shields if broken could slow nearby enemies or freeze other shielded foes. It feels like alot could of been done but wasn't. For now, I'm going to chop it up to the world basically being on fire, a lack of funding from the Acti split and the total revamp Bungie wanted with Beyond Light which seems fair to me but it doesn't change that it's still a little disappointing.

I like Salvations Grasp but it feels like it lacks something. For example, if it freezes a target, it should cause an explosion instantly instead of waiting for the player. Something little like that could really kick it up, but I bet that's going to be it's catalysts or something.

I would just like to say; freelance iron banner is a blockbuster hit for me. I play solo as much, if not more than I play with a squad. Great job bungie!

Linear fusion rifles either need a buff or should go into the energy slot

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:53 PM PST

Think about it. Every other non-exotic heavy weapon is great at add clearing and boss damage. Except for linear fusions. Their damage just can't keep up. Not to mention there's not nearly enough of them to require their own category.

So it's either a matter of buffing their damage to match other heavy weapons, OR put them with the other fusion rifles. Like how there's already aggressive and rapid-fire frames, these would just become linear frames. Logically, it makes sense, but might require a small damage reduction or reserves reduction to put them in line with other fusions.

Just a thought. What do y'all think?

Bungie, please make Assassin's Cowl, Felwinter's Helm and Severance Enclosure work with Stasis subclasses.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:06 AM PST

There is so much potential synergy with these exotics and their respective classes and I really think each exotic would finally have a real chance to shine if we could use them with Stasis. Please Bungie?

Sleeper Simulant should not be in the state that it is and Xenophage gets a blind eye

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:53 PM PST

Sleeper is hardly usable in any activity WITH a catalyst mean while Xenophage requires 0 skill to use and can 1 tap you in Gambit and Crucible plus does better DPS than sleeper in PVE. Don't really see how sleeper needed to get nerfed into the dirt. Plus with Lament and other swords nuking bosses more than sleeper ever did I don't see why it hasn't been buffed.

I used to love Gambit. It’s not fun anymore.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 08:51 AM PST

I loved the teamwork aspect specifically, and the bias toward PvE. Now? Siphoning motes is way too fast. Heavy ammo is so limited as to be useless without Scavenger mods. 6 rounds of Heavy for a sword? 4 for Xenophage? What is even the point?

The first team to invade while siphoning is all but guaranteed to summon a Primeval first, because enemies take so much longer to kill, making it heavily biased toward PvP.

And you still have idiots standing around waiting for a portal instead of gathering motes. It's absurdly unbalanced.
