It can't be stressed enough how amazing and healthy the 50 to 10 power level grind change has been for the game and the players.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:19 AM PDT

This season has been my most consistent one yet from a play hours perspective, going all the way back to the Saint-14 season after Shadowkeep. The big similarity there is both seasons only had a 10 power level bump.

Being able to jump into higher level content (especially the ones that scale every season like Nightfalls and lost sectors) much earlier has been way more fun, not feeling like I have to wait until at least a month into the season to play the stuff I actually want to. As a result, I've found myself burned out a lot less and playing way more.

I definitely think the lower level grind on non-yearly expansions is one of the best changes they've made and will keep the playerbase more active and mentally healthy in the long-run.

Thank you to; Shohreh Aghdashloo, you gave an amazing performance as always! (Voice of Lakshmi-2)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:06 PM PDT

The character Lakshmi-2 is fairly well despised amongst the D2 community at this point and most are glad to see her go. I think this character brought an excellent and much needed element to the destiny story. One character's flawed and fearful outlook toward an old enemy as they try to broker peace. Poisoned by Savathun and the twisted vision of possible dark fates for humanity, Lakshmi-2 saw no possible chance for peace. She saw no other option but to take extreme action and payed the ultimate price.
I think Ms. Aghdashloo gave Lakshmi-2 a very distinct character, from her naturally coarse voice to the passion in the line readings. She was able to successfully stir people's emotions and take us through this character's final arc. A tribute to her success is how the community (in general) feels toward this character.

Personally, I feel somewhat sorry for Lakshmi-2. While Mithrax and the house of light have proven themselves honorable and staunch allies, the Eliksni as a whole, waged terrible war against humanity to regain control of their "Great Machine". Something Lakshmi-2 was neither able to forgive nor forget. I think this made her an easy target for Savathun. Magnifying her own flaws to push her toward a destructive path, dividing and weakening humanity.

Great stuff from Bungie this season and again, a great performance from Ms. Aghdashloo!

If you haven't seen the TV show "The Expanse" (on Amazon Prime), it is well worth your time. Ms. Aghdashloo plays a fantastic character in it. In my opinion, its one of the best Sci-fi shows in production right now, with amazing effects, great story and great actors.

The dialogue between Saint and Mithrax for the Epilogue is amazing.

Saint: Do not worry, Mithrax, I am on my way!

Mithrax: No! you must protect your people!

    Saint: You are my people!

Fucking beautiful, Bungie. You absolutely killed it with the Epilogue. The character development is amazing. Also, fuck Lakshmi. All my homies hate Lakshmi.

The sound design team at Bungie are second to none.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 05:25 AM PDT

It must have been said a hundred times, and there are many creative departments who are deserving of praise, but whenever I hear the little details of sound design littered throughout Destiny 2 I'm always blown away.

It's such a critical part to our enjoyment of this medium and it's something that often goes to the back of our minds when taking in the experience.

Whoever did this work on Rasputin's voice - https://youtu.be/nsTBjuXxIqE

    Is a genius.

Never mind all of the astounding gun and action sound effects, just the opening of the different types of chests is so incredibly satisfying. They're employing a multitude of audio tricks, like the rhythm of locks clicking open in a sequence to make even the 10,000th chest opened sound as satisfying as the 1st. Zelda got it right way back in the day and Bungie are keeping up with the best of them in the current era of creative sound design.

TLDR: Bungo do sound nice like

    End of Season Cutscene Aiming?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:37 AM PDT

Can we take a moment and talk about the fact that not a single Vex hit anything in that cutscene. Like, did they all become stormtroopers or something? It kind of ruined the moment for me. I wish some of the Eliksni and maybe some humans from the Last City would have died. I think it would have made that tension even better.

Also, what was up with everyone standing out in the open? Guardians can be revived, but does Eliksni not understand the concept of cover?

One more then I am done. It really looked like Ikora Nova bombed friendlies?

You know what I’m excited for in Witch Queen? New enemy units.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:02 AM PDT

Remember the first time we saw a Brig drop out of the sky in the Beyond Light trailer? Or the first time seeing a Wyvern pounce on a guardian? Witch Queen will for sure be packed with a ton of cool shit, but it'll be sick to see new Hive/Taken enemies that pose a real threat to us, more so than your average acolyte.

[Spoiler] The cutscene with Saint and the Eliksni was great but I think it was missing one very important thing.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 03:15 PM PDT

    A Ward of Dawn.

Ever since the cutscene of how the Eliksni view Saint and what part his bubble played in that, and what we knew would happen this week from the leaks, I imagined the scene to go pretty much similar to this but with a call back to the cutscene from earlier in the season.

When the Vex horde are closing in on the Eliksni, Saint would put up a huge Ward of Dawn to protect them, but knowing what they do of it from the stories, they would cower and fear it, thinking it would blind them but would slowly come to realise that it is instead a warm blue glow that protects them from incoming shots. Considering how the blinding effect of the helmet works on friends and foes, this would be a great way to show them practically that he thinks of them now as allies and truly cares for them. The lair of the demon now becoming a safe space for them and their hatchlings, completely redeeming Saint in the eyes of the Eliksni.

Either way, it was a great arc to the story of Saint and the Eliksni and I would love to see it keep going down the line.

The Tower being "Taken" was at once one of the best and worst things to happen in D2.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:04 AM PDT

Seeing the tower full of Taken blights as the culmination of the slow build up of the seasonal story was amazing, both from a narrative and visual perspective but was then completely let down by no one seemingly realising or caring what was happening.

I get that it was all just a simulation, but considering that the endless night had at this point been mentally degrading people, this should have been a huge moment. A moment where people stepped over the line into hopelessness, not just standing within inches of one as part of their patrol or daily routines.

I hope Bungie gives us more of these potentially huge moments in coming seasons but does a little more to pay off on the moment because as it is, it didn't matter to anyone or anything that there were huge Taken blights that close to the Traveller and the Last City.

I stalked 500 guardian's resilience levels so I can voop them better. Here are the results...

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 12:55 PM PDT

    Originally posted in r/CrucibleGuidebook

And, if you're a fusion rifle enthusiast like me, "are liquid coils/accelerated actually worth the tradeoffs, practically speaking?"

I spent a lot of last week grinding Plug One.1's, and wanted to know what really is the best damage level to be aiming for in the crucible. To that end, I played a bunch of crucible matches and noted down the resilience level of each unique guardian that was in my lobby. If this is all that you came for, here are the results:

    RESILIENCE FREQUENCIES:

Resilience Level No. of Guardians Percentage
    1 12 2.4
    2 59 11.8
    3 97 19.4
    4 104 20.8
    5 93 18.6
    6 58 11.6
    7 32 6.4
    8 19 3.8
    9 16 3.2
    10 11 2.2
    TOTAL: 501 100

Note: the sample size of 500 means we can be fairly confident of the % frequency of each confidence level. This results in a 90% confidence interval of around +/-3% to the true frequency of each resilience levels, and a 99% confidence interval of around +/-4%.

The resilience level was measured in games of Control and Iron Banner. To ensure minimize the chance that guardians were double counted, I alternated between the different game modes, and only played 4 total games per counting session (2 of each game mode). This was a small enough set that I was fairly confident I remembered the names/look/loadout of each guardian I inspected.

    FUSION RIFLE TESTS:

Here's the fun part. So what does this mean for the 30 or so Plug One.1's that I farmed in the past week, or the Exile's Curses that's been sitting in my vault? The first manner of business was to test at which resilience levels each associated charge times are able to kill with which number of bolts. To that end, I loaded up another private lobby, and (you all know the drill) continually shot my friend u/HedgehogOK8370 repeatedly... for science...

Fusion rifles posed a completely different challenge compared to the shotgun testing I performed earlier this month. Because the game sucks and doesn't show you all the damage values consistently, and because rounding is a thing, it's very difficult to tell how many bolts are required to kill just by unloading a volley at point blank range. So, to test this, here is the methodology I used:

    Methodology:

So I got really good at pulling away my fusion rifle volley last second (giggity) such that I am only hitting one or two bolts each time I shoot the fusion rifle. But instead of counting how many bolts I needed to kill, I repeated this test approximately 10 to 15 times per resilience level, per charge time and saw if I was able to leave the target at 1HP. If NOT, then the target increased their resilience level by 1, and I repeated the process. If I am still not able to leave the target at 1HP, then I repeat this process. If I AM able to leave them at 1HP, then the target went back down 1 resilience level. Once I confirm that I am still not able to leave the target at 1HP at this repeated resilience level, I concluded that the this is the max resilience that X charge time can kill in Y bolts.

The test was also conducted under a condition of a 20% damage boost. This constitutes the vast majority of damage buff scenarios in the game, including empowering rift, kickstart, high-energy fire, Lumina, etc. Exceptions to this are weapons of light (33%) and reservoir burst (25% at full mag). However, these come up relatively few times in a match where it shouldn't affect your intended rolls on your fusion rifles. To achieve the most consistent results, a warlock empowering rift was used.

Note: Unfortunately I was not able to test HIR since I don't have Fusions in the precision/high impact frame families with this perk. That said, it's a headache to test and assign a number to as well since the damage increase is not constant and varies depending on the number of bullets left in the mag. However, based on damage numbers seen in VODs, accounting for potential damage rounding indicates HIR should allow to you kill guardians in the same number of bolts anywhere from 2 to 5 resilience levels higher. For such an easy to activate damage boost, it is very good in my opinion.

    Results:

To reiterate something that is widely known at this point in the vooping community, charge time and damage/bolt have a positively correlated relationship. With a few exceptions, the lower the charge time, the lower the damage. The first obvious question to get out of the way is: will fusion rifles of different archetypes do the same damage if they have the same charge time?

Turns out, answer is yes. My Plug One.1 with liquid coils (780ms charge time) is able to kill at the exact same resilience level as my Exile's Curse with Accelerated Coils and an Adept Charge Time mod. This makes compiling the information somewhat simpler.

That said, here are the results of the bolts to kill and the resilience level of each fusion rifle charge time:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KdY2nPUmIQbQyaIb_yuR0e8Ny_FyJHZgWGGIcgmX7SM/edit?usp=sharing

Note: charge times less than 660 is omitted since even rapid fire fusion rifles (540ms) are able to kill all resilience with 6 bolts, so the discussion is less necessary. I wasn't able to test 500ms since I dismantled most of my Cartesian Coordinates but I would assume it to be able to kill with 6 bolts up to at least 7 or 8 resilience.

    Discussion:

Section 1 - Charge Time Discussion:

From this, we are able to see that base precision frame fusion rifles (740ms charge time) is able to kill guardians 6 resilience or lower in 5 bolts. From the earlier stated resilience level distribution, this is approximately 85% of all the guardians in the Crucible! On the other hand, introducing liquid coils (780ms), the resilience threshold for 5 bolts becomes 8, and represents an additional 10% of guardian. On the other hand, one charge time decrease perk (through MW, Accelerated Coils or Adept Mod) with a 700ms charge time, is able to kill in 5 bolts on guardians 4 resilience and lower. This represents approximately 55% of guardians in the Crucible, a decrease of 30% compared to the base level for precisions.

Honestly, looking at this data, I don't know that Liquid Coils is recommended. With an increase charge time, AND taking up a perk slot that could be another 9 stability or range, you're only able to 5 bolt 10% more guardians. This will come into play even less often than this, since a good portion of the time you could have been able to land 6 bolts on the guardian and thus kill him/her/it regardless anyway, or you just whiff and only land 4 bolts or fewer. I don't feel like the amount of time that you would land 5 bolts exactly, AND the frequency of the target running 7 or 8 resilience, to be worth the use of a perk column that also increases the charge time. There is perhaps one exception to this which I will go through in section 2.

Decreasing the charge time is a little more interesting. On one hand, you are still able to kill a majority of guardians in the crucible in 5 bolts, and you get a faster charge time. On the other hand, you still lose a perk slot and lose the ability to 5 bolt almost another 1/3 of the guardians out there compared to base charge time. I think the trade off could potentially be worth it, but wouldn't be my go-to pick. An interesting min-max thing to note is that if you really are set on a faster charge time, having a charge time masterwork on an adept Plug One.1 is probably the way to go, since there's a tiny bit less of an opportunity cost due to how masterworking on adept weapons work.

What about high impact frames? I think, on the flip end, it's very difficult to justify running Accelerated Coils/Charge time MW on these things since you TANK the percentage of guardians that you can 4 bolt from ~72% down to only 33%, a close to 40% decrease! Since the base stats on high impact frames are also inherently worse than precision frames, you're going to be subject to more bolt spread and low stability issues, so needing 5 bolts to kill 2/3 of guardians in the crucible just doesn't seem like a good idea (especially since it means potentially missing out on particle repeater/stability MW).

On the other hand, I think a case can be made for liquid coils. While the increase in guardians that you can kill in 4 bolts is still modest (~15%), it's better than running liquid coils on precision frames. Plus, as stated earlier, due to high impact frame's inherently lower stats, there's definitely a better value in attempting to securing the 4 bolt kill. That said, if you asked me, I would still recommend using the default charge time.

Section 2 - KickStart (and Other Damage Increases)

There's a little more discussion to be had when damage perks are taken into consideration. In the spreadsheet, the %times affected column under Section 2 indicates the percentage of target guardians where kickstart/other 20% damage increasing buffs will make make a difference in the bolts to kill.

It seems to me a damage perk where it only really makes a difference less than 1/3 of the time seems pretty meaningless, especially in the case of kickstart, where the trigger conditions are fairly stringent. However, do also note the following. 1) Kickstart also has the benefit of reducing charge time which is not reflected in the spreadsheets, and 2) Are there even better perks to take instead of kickstart anyway?

Addressing 2), looking at the two weapons that can roll kickstart, here are the other options:

Plug One.1: Cornered, Adrenaline Junkie, Backup Plan, Thresh, Reservoir Burst

Exile's Curse: Backup Plan, Vorpal Weapon, HIR, Celerity

For the Plug One.1, honestly nothing here is amazing anyway. In PvP, Cornered, Backup Plan and Thresh are really your only alternative options (unless you happen to be married to Ashen Wake or Shinobu's Vow, then Adrenaline Junkie can work also). Thresh isn't nearly as good as we hoped it would get as it only shaves off additional 2s of your super per kill under typical conditions. Backup plan is really fun when it works, but I find the decreased charge time to mess with me more than it helps. Cornered can be good and probably is the only other real contender in my opinion, and that's also similarly situational. One thing to note for the Plug One.1 is that the value of KickStart goes up the lower you decide to take your charge time.

For the Exile's Curse... It's hard to recommend kickstart over other options. HIR reserves is a very good perk that achieves the same effect of Kickstart, albeit to a slightly less degree. Though the damage increase is modest in comparison, because most resiliences levels are cluttered towards the lower end, you'll be reaping 80% of the benefit already anyway. Vorpal has the added benefit of being able to one-burst supers without needing to sprint for a second and a half and then slide.

Of course, the argument can be made that kickstart mitigates the effect of damage dropoff as well. While that is true, in practice, damage dropoff is very rarely the cause of fusion rifles missing the one hit kill. Once you're outside of the 20 meter range, even if kickstart means you can still theoretically kill in 4 or 5 bolts, you're gonna have a really hard time landing all the shots unless the stars align.

Edit: It seems that I have missed the "new" dreambreaker as also being able to roll Kickstart. Since the default adaptive charge time of 660 is covered, we can see that kickstart would indeed be a great perk on the dreambreaker. Unfortunately, dreambreaker otherwise is an incredibly mediocre weapon. And that's being generous. All round low stats, low zoom value at 15, and not having any especially stand out consistency perks like Tap the trigger or Firmly Planted means it's very unlikely to compete even against poorly rolled Plug One.1's. In fact, you can roll a regular Plug One.1 with accelerated coils and charge time MW, thereby giving it the same charge time as dreambreaker, and STILL beat it in the stability and range department by over 20 points. Not to mention Plug One.1 having 17 zoom vs 15, 75 recoil and innate precision frame vs 57 of the dreambreaker...

    TL;DR:

    1. Running standard charge time is probably the best option for both precision and high impact frames.
    2. Liquid Coils on precision frames give very minor boosts to consistency and is not recommended, unless it is ran together with kickstart where it can work a little better.
    3. Kickstart achieves very little on precision frames unless you have either liquid coils or accelerated coils/charge time MW/adept charge time mod.
    4. Kickstart's value goes up the more impact/charge time reducing perks you slap on. But honestly why would you.
    5. Kickstart achieves next to nothing on high impact fusion rifles so I would really not recommended. Besides, HIR is a thing and you can probs just run that instead.

The Last City is now a military dictatorship.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:43 PM PDT

The city's governing system was always flawed. Lakshmi alluded at the start of the season that the system is some resemblance of a representative democracy, which was very flawed as well. The only civilian representation that the ordinary citizens got was from the three factions, which there is no way that they combined represents a majority of the views of the people due. However, now that even those pseudo-representatives have either left the city or disbanded altogether, all there is left of the governing body is the vanguard, which essentially is the military. Now so far there is nothing that suggests that either Zavala or Ikora will become an oppressive tyrant, but it does not change the fact that the military is the sole governing party.

One tiny thing about Epilogue that I want to give a little bit of praise to

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 08:04 PM PDT

During the Last City Override, Mithrax and Saint are saying their regular lines of dialogue that you would hear during a normal Override, but this time there's a noticable hint of urgency in their voices. The lines are exactly the same text-wise, but the inflection in their voices is more intense, and really makes you feel like The Last City is in severe peril.

It's little things like this that highlight how well Bungie nailed the storytelling this season

Can't un-see this after playing blind well today

What monster at Bungie put the blind well off-centre?

Got beaten in Trials of Osiris while at one win. The opposing team gets to the lighthouse from that game. If that's not the best description of Destiny on Stadia, I don't know what is.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:22 AM PDT

Title, I don't have anything else to say.

Edit: Hopefully the Trials overhaul will do something to the matchmaking, because apparently it's not just stadia's low player count.

Edit 2: With low player counts, a mediocre player such as myself might have better chances at getting flawless, right? If I'm not playing sweats, of course.

Explosive Payload is a flat out damage increase in PvE!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 09:49 AM PDT

I thought this was common knowledge but I realized the perk tooltip doesn't mention this at all, and there are quite a few people who are unaware! A lot of people know that it provides extra effective range with the explosive damage. The perk splits the damage in two, 50% bullet damage and 50% explosive damage - and the explosive damage does not have any damage falloff regardless of the range. That is the case for both PvP and PvE. However, in PvE the explosive damage is also 30% increased. This evens out to +15% body shot damage or about +11% precision damage.

I know this is common knowledge for some of you, but I thought everyone should know.

The Eye of Another World and the Dragon's Shadow exotic armors need some Ornament love.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 07:38 AM PDT

I absolutely LOVE what these pieces of armor do for me but hell if I can find armor to match the aesthetics. Dragon's Shadow already has an Ornament but it doesn't change much at all and reacts to shaders poorly even though it is a slight improvement.

Eye of Another World is self explanatory. Honestly an underrated helmet. It is real good for all ability cooldowns depending on your build. But man do I look ridiculous wearing it. Closest armor set I got to match it is the Season of Arrivals season pass armor. Makes you look like a freak alien scientist.

(Spoiler) The real reason for the Nova Warp Buff...

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 11:32 AM PDT

It just took Ikora showing us we were doing it wrong...Why else would she use it in PvE? We just didn't know how.

Something interesting I noticed about this weeks override

    Posted: 10 Aug 2021 04:31 PM PDT

Unlike most other overrides ive done this season, the players i matched with absolutely demolished the hordes of enemies that spawned in and coordinated way better than i anticipated, its usually a clumsy mess for the first part that just sorta finishes after 6-8 minutes, unlike now where the first part took like 2 minutes, my current guess is that the player base was so invested in the story that they actually took the invasion seriously and went to town on the enemies.

hats off to bungie for this great ending

I’m so happy with Saints story this season.

    M: Save your people

    S: You are my people.

There's something so beautiful with how Bungie did the arc with Saint and Mithrax this season. True comrades in arms. Like brothers.
