The State of the Cabal Empire

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:13 PM PDT

So yeah the Cabal has pretty much been beaten harder than a docked dreg. The Red Legion, their grandest and most powerful legion was decimated and annihilated in a matter of months.

Ghaul is dead, and the original leadership seems to have been annihilated to the point of where Val Ca'uor was their leading officer. Now, of course, others would fill these places, but these field promotions seem to be unorthodox for the Cabal. This would indicate that the current cadre of commanders is likely unfit for the position.

Conversely, Calus's forces have done next to nothing but grow in power. He seems to have genetic cloning sufficient enough to replenish his forces, and he's earned if not the loyalty then the brief employment of Guardians. For all intents and purposes, the Cabal's military empire is dead, and in its place, the decadent laziness of Calus has retaken its crown.

I'm not so sure about this. The Cabal Booklet is an account of Calus of his conspirators, and how he wished them dead Most of these conspirators have indeed met their nasty ends, however, there are three who have their current situations shrouded in uncertainty. The Evocatate-General Umun'arath, Primus of All Legions; Caiatl, the Princess-Imperial; and Freeborn Otzot, the Psion Savant.

While the Red Legion was in all likelihood the largest, best-funded, and most elite of all the Cabal's legions, it was but one legion. Their expansionist campaigns would need legions to occupy and defend territory, and legions to push less important frontiers: legions likely stationed near Torobatl and more importantly under the control of the Evocatate-General. This along with the slave-populace of the Psions and other races would, I believe, allow for us to potentially see the Cabal in their military form again.

It seems reasonable to me that much like the dying days of the Roman Republic, the dying days of the Cabal Empire would see the emergence of a Triad: Umun'arath, Caiatl, and Otzot, bound together in their dedication to the status quo and loyalty to the military ancestry of the Cabal.

So yeah, Bungo might bring the Cabal back in D3. It seems a reasonable excuse to allow us to keep fighting them, and I'd love to hear other people's takes on this theory I've had simmering in the back of my mind for a while.

Probably about a third of the exotic armor pieces from each class are outdated or underutilized and could use a rework.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:25 AM PDT

All in the title. Everyone has a handful of exotic pieces that should instantly come to mind if they even remember that those pieces exist. Pieces that they can never really justify using, or aren't even interesting enough to consider.

Whoever designed the Shaders for this season, well done!

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:00 AM PDT

I think this season has had some of the best shaders thus far. I'm really enjoying the bright colors and the "effects" from from some of the more iridescent shaders. It's a positive direction and allows me to better customize my guardian. Lastly, I really like that some are part of the vanguard, crucible, and gambit seasonal pursuits.

We built a new app for Crucible! Introducing Redrix.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 11:14 AM PDT

TLDR; Redrix gives you tools to improve your Destiny 2 PvP skills. It's free for iOS and Android (no ads). Check it out at:

    redrix.io (ha! Io!)

A couple months ago, a good friend of mine /u/mikechambers wanted to play with the Destiny 2 APIs for Crucible, and I was looking for an excuse to build something with Google's Flutter platform, so we decided to collaborate on an app. It came together surprisingly quickly, but we decided to wait to announce it until after ShadowKeep dropped, so that we could fix the issues that inevitably arose.

This initial version for iOS and Android has a few main features:

    • Check out the game mode & map as you're flying in, gaining time to swap your gear and plan.
    • (includes a nice picture, so you can identify the map even if you're incapable of remember the names like me)
    • Review results for recent games & check your valor / glory rank info.
    • View a graph charting performance trends.
    • Quickly swap between fireteam members to check how they're doing.

We have lots of ideas for further improvement, including lifetime stats, individual game details, callout maps, and more stats analysis tools, but we'd love to hear your feature ideas and feedback.

Mike handled data integration, and I handled design and UI dev. It was labour of love - we had a ton of fun building it, and we are excited to share it with a community that's helped us both so much.

Also, big shoutout to the Chubby Bunnies, our clan of lovable misfits, for all their support and testing.

Grab it at redrix.io and make Shaxx proud!

EDIT: We've had a few reports of sign in issues, which seem to be mostly related to one of two things: 1. spaces at the end of the gamertag, 2. case sensitivity. We'll publish an update in the next couple days that will fix #1 automatically, and get rid of case sensitivity, but if you have trouble, it might be related to this.

EDIT2: Mandatory thank you for the gold & silver! "With ten like you. I could end the war."

EDIT3: We fired up a Discord server for feedback and help. https://discord.gg/adXucT

Gambit Prime Primeval Damage Phase - Common Mistake

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 12:30 AM PDT

When playing Gambit Prime, I have noticed many people use most of their resources on the set first wave of Primeval.

    DO NOT DO THIS

The more envoys you kill, the greater your damage against the Primeval is. Therefore, you want to conserve your heavy ammo and supers for later into the Primeval phase.

Using your resources during the first phase does those pesky invaders a huge favor as well. When an invader heals the Primeval, it is much easier to make up for the lost ground if you conserve your resources. Less damage in early phases = less progress taken by invaders.

So please, if you are playing Gambit Prime, I beg of you, don't use your heavy or supers the moment the Primeval is open.

Sincerely, A Very Frustrated Gambit Fan

A minmaxer's guide to armor 2.0 stat rolls

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 03:21 PM PDT

I've spent a lot of time looking at and thinking about the stat rolls for armor 2.0. I want to cover some basic tips on how to get the most out of your armor pieces and then dive into more advanced techniques as well as some of my own speculation on how the underlying logic for the stat rolls actually works.

TL;DR of my minmaxing method at the bottom

    The Basics

    • Stat points in between tiers are wasted points. Having 59 points in discipline is the same as 50 points in discipline. We want to avoid wasted points as much as possible.
    • Your class item still grants +2 to each stat when masterworked. This means that with a fully masterworked set, you get +10 to every single stat. This also means you can masterwork your class item the moment you get the piece you want in the element you want.
    • When considering what stat mods to use, also think about their cost. An intellect mod costs 5 energy whereas a discipline mod costs 3. When deciding what stats you want to focus on with your armor rolls, keep this in mind. It is almost always better to take intellect over discipline since you can compensate discipline cheaply with mods.

    How Are Stat Rolls Calculated?

This is a complicated question and everything here is conjecture based upon what I have observed. Take everything here with a grain of salt, but also keep in mind that just because you have a piece of armor which doesn't follow these rules that doesn't mean all the insights should be dismissed. Also, none of this applies to 1.0 armor carried over to 2.0 as that seems to follow a different system.

Based on looking at enough armor drops to fill up my vault twice over, here's what I've gathered:

    • Individual stat rolls have 4 tiers: low, medium, high, and "godroll"
    • Any given piece of armor will have two low stats, two medium stats, and either two high or one high and one "godroll" stat (apparently it is possible to have two godroll stats, but this is presumably incredibly rare).
    • The ranges for these stats are approximately:
      • Low: 2-6
      • Medium: 6-12
      • High: 12-18
      • Godroll: 20-30
    • At the extreme ends of the stat totals (<50 and >63) it is possible to get stats a bit outside these ranges. I'll go into in a moment.

So, what are the steps involved in rolling an armor piece's stats?

    1. Determine the total number of points for the armor piece
    2. Decide if the piece should have a godroll
    3. If necessary, roll the godroll value
    4. Roll the lows, mediums, and highs

As I mentioned above, it is possible for stats to deviate from the ranges slightly. For total stat rolls that are very low or very high, the ranges may be squshed or stretched so that the target value can be reached, but these ranges are the most common. This squash effect is even more amplified on armor pieces with a godroll. It is entirely possible to get an armor piece with a total of 47 points and +30 in a single stat. The ranges are then appropriately squashed before the remaining stats are rolled.

So what does this tell us about minmaxing?

It tells us quite a lot actually! First off, we now know that a single stat on an armor piece can be 30 at most. We also know that it is impossible (or at least incredibly unlikely) for us to get a single armor piece with 3 stats >12. We can use this information to determine what kinds of rolls are worth masterworking. For example, if you are prioritizing Recovery, Discipline, and Intellect and you get a piece with +18, +18, and +12 for those stats respectively, you know you're not going to get much better. This is effectively a perfect armor piece. (EDIT: Godrolls can actually push you over this, but we'll use these values as an example of a great roll.)

    Are "godroll" pieces worth it?

I'm still wrestling with this question myself. At the lower ranges (<60) I've found that the resulting spread squash leads to less optimal stats overall. These pieces also complicate balancing since you can't use simpler methods of calculating good loadouts, but this will probably be alleviated as tools like DIM improve.

EDIT: Yes, god roll pieces are worth it. Your goal is maximize three "focus" stats. It is entirely possible that you have three pieces with godrolls in different stats and one more balanced piece. You can use DIM's loadout optimizer to find these combos. More details below.

How are you so sure this is how rolls work?

To be honest, I'm not. This is all very speculative, but I'll lay out my reasoning. Godroll stats and range squash/stretch are at the heart of this. Effectively, there's really only two ways the rolls can work:

    1. Stats are rolled first, which produces a total
    2. Total is rolled first (either as a concrete value or range), and stats are rolled to fit

The existence of godroll armor pieces that have totals <50 leads me to believe that #2 is the case. If the stats are rolled first, it would be incredibly unlikely for an armor piece with a godroll to have a low total. "But what if the existence of a godroll simply changes the spread available to the resulting pieces?" That might be true, but then you're still modifying the spread to hit a target total, which is more or less the same as option 2.

So totals are calculated first, then, evidenced by stat squish and stretch, godrolls must be determined second and the rest of the stats follow.

    The Perfect Armor Set

So, knowing what we know about how stat rolls work, what is the perfect armor set? I'm not here to argue what stats are most important. For illustrative purposes, I'm going to say that I prioritize Intellect, Discipline, and Recovery but you can apply this to whatever stats you like. Again, keep in mind the energy cost of mods and that based on the total possible number of points, it really only makes sense to focus on 3 stats.

First off, what is the theoretical maximum number of points we can put into our three stats? We start with at least 10 in each from masterwork and then we have 5 mod slots that we can use for +50 more where we need it. Given what we know about rolls, a great roll would be +18 Intellect, +18 Recovery, +12 Discipline (I'm ignoring godroll stats here for simplicity). This means before mods our spread would look like:

    Intellect: 82

    Discipline: 82

    Recovery: 58

This puts us in a "big oof" situation with recovery. Those are 8 wasted points! However, there is a more optimal spread across our preferred stats.

    Intellect Discipline Recovery
    Head 18 18 12
    Arms 18 18 12
    Chest 18 12 18
    Legs 18 12 18
    Masterwork 10 10 10
    Total 82 70 70

Only two points wasted! Even better, our most expensive mod stat is also the closest to max. Now, depending on what you prefer, you can apply your mods. I would recommend checking the impact of each tier to determine where your mods would be best spent: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kv9cRk234Ju8kIQECaYIQ--lHGPwFgfYHApuYJrIB1I/edit#gid=0

Given the build I am going for, I would place three mods in recovery and two mods into discipline in order to get my best bang for buck: 20% improvement on recovery and 8% improvement on discipline. In theory I would actually get a better payoff by maxing out Intellect, but there are enough ways to regen super that I'd prefer that improvement on my grenade.

    What's "good enough"?

All this said, is it likely you will ever get this set of rolls for all your armor pieces and get the elemental affinity you want? Probably not. So then the question becomes: "What's good enough and when should I masterwork?"

You should masterwork your class item ASAP. It doesn't have any stat rolls except for affinity. Once you get the piece you want in the affinity you want, masterwork that bad boy. For the rest, I wouldn't bother concerning myself too much with whether I'm wasting points until some of the loadout tools can do that math for you. There's just too many combinations to work through. In the meantime, get the stats you want as high as you can. My method for this is to simply go through my vault, take the sum of my three focus stats and equip the highest total.

As for masterworking, I'm personally going to masterwork any pieces where the sum of my three target stats is >40. I picked this value semi-scientifically. Based on the values above, you can get 192 total stat points in your three primary stats just by RNG. If all of my armor pieces grant me 40 points towards my primary stats, that is 160 points total, or around 83% efficiency. >35 points puts you at around 73% efficiency. (EDIT: The efficiency numbers here aren't quite right because godrolls on high total pieces can throw things off) I've played enough to be at season rank 55 and I have multiple pieces in each slot which fit the >35 requirement, but only 2 pieces overall which fit >40. Feel free to use that info to decide when you want to MW.

All of that being said, I am making my choices this way simply because the tools haven't caught up yet. I'm certain that someone is working on an optimizer for armor 2.0 stats. I know that DIM already has this to some degree, but it really doesn't work in a way that makes it easy to find your "best" set as I've described above.

EDIT: I guess I'm just grumpy and don't like the way DIM's loadout optimizer works, but this is technically possible.

    Optimizing Your Loadouts with DIM

You can use the Loadout Optimizer on DIM to make the best use of your high roll pieces and not waste points. It is a little bit obtuse, but it works.

    1. On the lefthand side of the Loadout Optimizer tab there is a list of all the stats with a min/max range.
    2. Take your primary stat and set the min equal to the max
    3. Start raising up your secondary stats until there are no more loadouts
    4. From here, play with the mins and maxes of your focus stats to see what your options are and pick the option that works best for you.

One nice thing about doing this through DIM is you can also specify an element for each piece as well. It is a bit of a weird process, but once you play around a bit you'll get used to it.

    Conclusion/TL;DR

I feel like a lot of people are overwhelmed by the RNG and how to pick the "best" armor set in armor 2.0. Although there is a lot to unpack in the full details of how it works, most people can follow these rules to get the most out of their armor and clear some space in their vaults:

    1. Pick three focus stats. (Based on the current meta, I would suggest Intellect, Recovery, and Discipline)
    2. Order them by mod cost. The stat with the highest mod cost is your primary focus. (Probably Intellect)
    3. Keep any armor pieces where the sum of your focus stats is >35, shard everything else
    4. Pieces with a focus stat total >40 are masterwork-worthy
    5. Once you have a good collection of >35 armor, you can start worrying about "lost" points. "Lost" meaning points in between tiers. See the instructions above on how to optimize with DIM.
    6. Use mods to fill raise your ranks based on "bang for buck": https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kv9cRk234Ju8kIQECaYIQ--lHGPwFgfYHApuYJrIB1I/edit#gid=0

Alternatively, you can wait a few months until all the online tools can do this for you.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

EDIT: Updated max godroll value to 30. It also looks like it is actually possible to get two godrolls on a piece, but it basically squishes all the other stats to the min. https://i.imgur.com/SbDyjnH.png

EDIT 2: I'm seeing some really interesting spreads involving god rolls in the comments. Most of what I've said above more or less ignores godrolls, but I'll need to collect a bit more data to fully understand how they impact the rest of the stats.

EDIT 3: Clarified a bit further what stretch and squash mean and included some instructions on how you can find optimal loadouts with DIM. Also need more data on godrolls and pieces with totals >60.

Bungie, it's been awhile since we've talked about factions. Can we get a developer article about what you're thinking of doing with them?

The Pluperfect/Temporal Clause have terrible drop rates for weapons you have to unlock the ability to farm and will most likely go away at the end of the season.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:04 AM PDT

It really doesn't make sense for these weapons to be so restricted. They are by far not even close to best in slot, a collectors item at best. Getting only one Pluperfect from a weeks worth of crucible in which I play atleast 5 games a day is abysmal.

Leviathan's Breath - Getting into Banshee's Workshop + Full guide

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 10:34 AM PDT

    Link: https://youtu.be/gah8733rbjE

Its in the Hangar, in the Daito room

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Rest of the Questline:

    The Back Way
Banshee-44 wants to give you a weapon stored in his workshop, but he didn't specify how to get in. Locate the hidden entrance to Banshee's workshop and find the weapon.

    2. Where Are the Keys, Sir
You found a Bow in a display case in a room that's got to be Banshee's workshop. Problem is, the case is locked. Return to Banshee to complain. (Politely, of course.)

    3. Intro to Safecracking 101
You need a rotating keycode to access the Bow in Banshee's workshop, but the original has been lost. You'll have to generate a new code following the same steps that Banshee did. First on Banshee's list is to get out into the field to seed a key generator with combat data. Seed data for a new keycode by completing Gambit matches or Vanguard strikes. Gambit Prime matches and Nightfall strikes grant the most efficient progress.

    4. Advanced Safecracking 201
The key generator is seeded with viable combat data, and it can now output keycodes… but to constrain the possible set of generated codes, Ghost says you'll need to provide the generator with some more targeted data. Literally. Use a Bow to land precision final blows against Vex or Cabal.

    5. Economics of War
The key generator needs just a little more data before you're ready to return to Banshee for final authentication. To further limit the possible codes the generator can create, you'll have to recreate the conditions under which Banshee programmed the first codes: fighting Red Legion forces during the Red War. Complete an epic reprise of strike "The Arms Dealer" in the European Dead Zone on Earth.

    6. Applied Cryptosecurity
You've completed all the necessary calibrations on the key generator. The only thing remaining is a biometric authentication from Banshee. Return to Banshee-44 in the Tower.

    7. Martial Archery 401
Return to Banshee's workshop to claim the Bow.

Every legendary weapon should at least have a mod slot with the introduction of Champion enemies

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:39 AM PDT

I was playing the Nightfall this week and got Duty Bound to drop. I was excited to see that I got a fully masterworked new weapon until I saw that it had no mod slots. I can't even feasibly take the Savathun's Song Nightfall weapon back into the Nightfall because it can't kill barrier, overload, or unstoppable enemies.

Pretty disappointing. I personally think many Y1 weapons still need some sort of refresh but can we at least start by blanket adding mod slots to all these weapons please?

"Cayde'll tell ya where the secret entrance is."

Edit: Wow. Either my first or second front page ever and I just happened to be lucky enough to be playing the first few hours the quest went live. Timing really does have a huge impact on reddit posts.

    We Should Really Celebrate Banshee-44

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 06:46 AM PDT

He hasn't needed a reboot for as long as we've known him. We can trust him with helping us build the questionable (i.e. Thorn), possibly because we know also that he will forget about it, besides being the only gunsmith we can go to. In light of how sad it may be that he forgot Cayde is dead, Banshee is the one who keeps him alive in our hearts.

Thank you, Banshee, for holding onto the important stuff, and helping us out over the years.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 12:03 PM PDT

Ana Bray goes to Mars to make contact with Rasputin, a Golden Age AI dedicated to protecting humanity, and all we hear from you is "dangerous weapon" this and "you can't control it" that.

Meanwhile, Ikora is building a VEX GATE at THE TOWER (you know, the headquarters of the Vanguard) and you're just chilling at the balcony?? Dude.

The visual design of the Moon guns is great.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:43 AM PDT

I love all the talismans, bird bones, ribbons, and little bits of apocrypha on the guns. It's like you get to carry around Eris' superstitions and obsessive ritualistic behavior with you wherever you go.

On a side note, I'm really happy to see Eris fleshed out a little more as a character. Her story of trauma and recovery has been really affecting.

We now have 7 total raids in D2... Would be nice if we had a daily rotating raid that rewarded pinnacle drops.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:05 AM PDT

Obviously the core issue is the rng required to get a pinnacle drop in each slot before moving up in LL.

But this would revive old raids, give players a reason to sign in each day, and alleviate the improbable grind to 960. 3 birds stoned at once.
