    This Week At Bungie 10/03/2019

This week at Bungie, WE LANDED ON THE MOON!

As with some previous historic trips to the Moon, this one saw a few issues. Our teams remained calm, worked the problem, and hunted down the bugs to restore services.

The biggest issue was caused by game databases not doing their job correctly, which threw a wrench in the machine. Please don't blame your new friends just joining the community. This was a complex launch that included platform migrations and new ways for players to begin their journey with us. We aren't afraid of solving tough problems and will continue to hunt down any issues that arise!

    Raid Imminent

The Garden of Salvation will open to raiding parties in fewer than 48 hours. At 10 AM PDT on October 5, we will begin the race for World First (drop the 's—it's cleaner).

    Video Link

You can learn more details about the World First race here, and Bungie Rewards offers here. First, let's go over a quick reminder of the rewards at stake.

    World First Completion—Championship Belt

Completions within the first 24 Hours—24-Hour Emblem

Completions Before October 15—Raid Jacket Purchase

Completions During Season of the Undying—Raid T-Shirt Purchase

Player Support is working around the clock to support this launch. Let's check in with what they are currently tracking.

    This is their report.

    New Lights

This week we launched Shadowkeep, New Light, and brought Destiny 2 to Steam on PC. If you're just now joining us on this journey, let's get you acquainted with your player support resources.

    • Help.bungie.net: This is our knowledgebase archive where players can search for support articles relevant to their needs.
    • BungieHelp on Twitter: This is where we communicate deployment times and emergent issues to players on a large scale.
    • Known Issues thread: Here, Destiny Player Support keeps a running list of the latest issues to emerge in Destiny 2 as soon as they are confirmed.
    • #Help forum: If you don't find the info you need from any of the above resources, this is your channel to report issues. Here, Destiny Player Support and our bungie.net mentors patrol to assist players with support issues.
    • Player Support Report: This is our weekly address to players in the "This Week at Bungie" blog—that you're reading right now.

Also, if you're new to Destiny 2 and need to get up to speed, feel free to take a look at our Destiny 2: New Player Guide.

    Destiny 2 Known Issues

With this week's launch, we've closely monitored for player reports of issues impacting the Destiny 2 experience. Here are the top issues at the time of this writing, straight from our known issues thread:

    • Players will not receive the Gate Lord's Eye at Season Rank 7 if they claim it in an equipment-locked activity.
    • If it has been abandoned, the completed "Essence of Anguish" quest step can be reacquired only by unlocking the Lectern of Enchantment.
    • The "In Search of Answers" quest step may not appear in a player's inventory, even after talking with Eris. Please check the postmaster to pick up the quest and continue the campaign.
    • If the "Firewall" quest step is dismantled after completing Eris's weekly bounty, players have to wait a week before they can obtain a new one.
    • If the "Luna's Calling" weekly quest is deleted before collecting rewards and the bounty is reclaimed, players will have to wait a week to complete it.
    • Some players who purchase the Shadowkeep Deluxe Edition may not receive all four Season Passes, but may instead receive 1,000 Silver per unredeemed Season. Players may spend this Silver to purchase future seasons through the Seasons tab in the Director menu.
    • Players who encounter the error "problem reading game content" on Steam should ensure that they are NOT running Destiny 2 with elevated permissions (for example: do not use "Run as Administrator"). They should also make sure there is NO steam_appid.txt file in their Destiny 2 install directory.
    • Players with 300 or more friends on Steam may encounter crashes when launching Destiny 2. Players who encounter this issue can trim their friends list until they are below 300 while we investigate a fix.
    • We're investigating ongoing reports from players regarding issues with PC migration. In the meantime, if possible, players should attempt to retry migration.

Players who encounter other issues not listed in our known issues thread should report them to the #Help forum.

I'm not a sheep, I just watched a video game developer put everything on the line to stand up for themselves on my behalf and I am grateful.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:09 AM PDT

This is littered everywhere on r/DTG, Bungie Forums, random video game news outlets, twitter, etc. :

"How is this a 'new direction' or 'new foundation' for a game that has been out for years, I am tired of it."

"Destiny has been out for 5 years and they still can't get it right."

"I am tired of giving them second chances."

"I have a bunch of minor gripes that should have been fixed before release."

"I had to wait to log in on release day! WTF Bungie!"

"This is rediculous, Bungie clearly has no idea what they are doing."

    "Same shit, different day."

And if you try to respond to any of it with any amount of praise, you get called a sheep. Guess what, I am not a sheep. I am just not blinded by my petty rage and have sat through this entire godforsaken journey with Bungie. I have watched them struggle. I have watched them get chewed out into the ground, and I was sometimes the one doing the chewing. I have given them praise where praise was due and I gave and accepted criticisms for the game all while the fair-weather on and off players bitched from the sidelines.

Watching as a studio dropped their AAA publisher, migrated all of their data on PC to a completely different platform, coordinated and implemented cross-save, and then began acting independently unlike every other dev who gets in bed with the devil and makes a shit game, yeah. It is a new foundation. It is a completely new start. The amount of content and QoL improvements made in this expansion alone are massively impressive on not only a technical but a consumer experience scale. I am not "forgiving them" or handing out baseless empathy/pity - I am standing up for what a kick ass fucking job they did making my experience absolutely awesome.

Bungie separating from Activision and saying fuck you to their money and their support studios that were there to push the publisher's agenda was the biggest disrupt in gaming since Kojima left Konami and went independent. If you don't understand the scale of what they went through and put into their absolute passion project just to make us, the player, happy... then the artistry in gaming is completely lost on you and you need a reality check.

There is a difference between being an asshole and giving negative criticism, and there is a difference between being a sheep and giving positive criticism. Look at the reality of what just happened for this game and choose if you are going to be an asshole, a sheep, or a critic.

Final Word: Post got pretty crazy and I can't enjoy Destiny while keeping up with everyone, but thanks everyone for your responses, good or bad. Apologies if I didn't finish our conversation, debate, circle jerk, or pissing match but it is just getting hard to track down responses. Going to close with some general responses:

    • No I do not think Bungie cares about me, Joe, personally, but I do think they care about me as one of the many players who participate in their work.

    • No I am not providing PR for Bungie, nor do I work for Bungie. I'm a 30 year old dad who works in infrastructure and security at a conglomerate that just purchased the company I have worked for, for 8 years. I know what buyouts, acquisitions, and investors mean to businesses and an employee's outlook on the future. It's fucking scary. If u/cozmo23 or u/dmg04 need to confirm that for you, I will leave that to them.

    • Yes I have criticized this game many, many times before and I have another post about there being no Y1 armor in the world loot pool on the front page of this sub right now. I am not afraid to criticize art, it's why it exists. Video games, to me, are a combination of computers, programming, and art.

Love this community, even the parts I don't generally care for, and it's obvious I love this game. The dark horse rides toward the light, be there to defend it.

So far today I've seen Unbroken players teabagging after every kill in low level Comp, people screaming abuse in text chat, and someone describing a team as "F2P trash". Be better than this, Guardians.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:27 AM PDT

We've got a huge influx of new players that we should want to keep playing and, if they are New Light players, hopefully start investing money. If this is the attitude they see, we'll lose them in a flash.

If a person doesn't know how to start a Heroic, tell them. If they look a bit lost in Gambit, teach them. If they're struggling in Crucible, offer any tips you might have.

    Please, just be "better".

Thank you for the gold. In the spirit of the post, I made a donation to an anti bullying charity in my little attempt to pass it on. https://imgur.com/a/seUFIwq

Finishers should count as melee kills

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:30 AM PDT

My current build (Swashbuckler SMG and lightning weave) relies heavily on getting melee kills, weakening and enemy and killing with a finisher procs no melee perks. I want my budget Recluse to be as good as it can be dammit!

Plus, you're basically just doing a fancy melee.

How to Level Your Alts without shooting a single alien or opening a single of chest

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:59 AM PDT

    1. Level up your first character to 900+ doing the story missions, powerful rewards, etc. Now you will have a bunch of 900+ power weapons.

    2. Switch to your second character. Go to collections --> Armor --> Leveling. Then go to the blue armor and buy one of each type armor. You'll notice that the armor will be significantly above what your current armor is (750). Do this until you see the power level of the armor does not increase anymore.

    3. Go to the season rewards tab and you will see that the armor and the Eriana's Vow package (DO NOT OPEN THIS YET!) in there can still be picked up by your alt. Pick up all the pieces of armor you unlocked. This probably won't be a full set, depending on how much you leveled up.

    4. Go back to the blue leveling armor in collections and grab blue armor of the types armor that you did not get in step 3. Do this until the level of armor doesn't go up anymore

    5. Go to the season rewards tab again and grab the very first package that contains Eriana's Vow and a full armor set. Those pieces of armor will be way above your current armor.

I did this and started the campaign around 894 power before even doing anything. You should be to 900 power very shortly and can open up the powerful rewards right away.

    Edit:

I should have also added "...and without turning in any tokens" :)

I know you can fill some gaps with turning in tokens. But I exhausted all of my vanguard and Crucible tokens with my first character and didn't know the drops from the bearded EDZ dude dropped at same power level.

Elemental affinity on mods feels really terrible...

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:59 AM PDT

Been messing around with mods and I have to say, it is as bad as I expected.

There is no clear way to know which mods you even own. I can own a void sniper targeting mod but if I don´t have a void helmet then I literally cannot see it, because it doesn´t show up on the arc/solar helmet.

If I get a well-rolled solar Last Wish helmet that I like (and if I want the helmet to look like that I have no other options, because only Eververse stuff is transmog), but I only have arc shotgun targeting mod, well too bad.

I remember getting a pump action mod when turning in Crucible tokens, and I was confused trying to find it on my void cloak until I found an arc cloak and realized the mod is only arc.

The whole system just feels very restrictive and not good to navigate at all. Not to mention the splitting of ammo finders+elements just made the whole mod pool incredibly dilluted.

EDIT: Also, for those who are worried about the grind being "too little" if we had no elemental affinity, consider this:

Outside of Eververse set, you will have to re-grind every armor set that you like with good stat rolls. Since only Eververse armor (and a few exceptions AFAIK) are Ornaments, if you like anything else, you need to grind it. You like Calus armor? Grind away. You want to have Last Wish look? Go re-grind LW armor with the stat rolls you want. Iron Banner? Yup, again, wait for IB and grind it. You want to mix-match? Well, again, have fun grinding all those single pieces from activities like Escalation Protocol or Reckoning (btw this is quite fun right? All that Gambit Prime armor that we grinded for needs to be re-grinded again with the stats you want!).

And make sure all those pieces have the correct element lol!

This really feels like a bit too much.

As a Warframe player new to D2, the art direction in this game is stunning

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 02:23 PM PDT

I know I'm late to this party but I'm glad that I'm here. I'm no tribalistic troll, but as someone who only played vanilla Destiny 1 and almost 2000 hours of Warframe, I honestly think I didn't need to play Destiny 2, not because I think it's bad or anything but only because 1 looter shooter was enough for me (also because Activision). (There was a while that Destiny 2 was being given away for free on battle net, and I even deliberately decided not to get it)

But if nothing else the art design alone makes this worth my time. I'm frankly quite a cynical person and few things in video games impress me even in AAA titles, but I was utterly awed by the Titan open world. The last time that had happened was with the Ancient Forest of Monster hunter world. So thanks Bungie for a great game as well as a great port (the loading time could have been shorter though), and here's to 2000 hours of Destiny!

    Fly safe Guardians,

Edit: just visited Mercury for the first time. Holy shit that's the Sun. (IDK why I'm surprised tho)

New Light Has Not Been Implemented Well

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:44 AM PDT

IMO Bungie should have done a much better job implementing New Light. I've got 4 of my friends to download and play the game and so far whilst they all love how tight and smooth the gameplay is they are all utterly confused and have no clue what to do. They don't know what the main mission is, what the DLC is, where to find new missions etc. Bungie have simply let all these New Light players loose in a huge world with 2 years of content and expect them all to know the order to play the game. They've even removed the missions from the milestones tab, I told one of my friends to open his milestones by pressing E on the director and that should tell him what to do next. Nope, all it said was Eris needs help on the moon, prompting him to buy Shadowkeep when he hasn't played any other part of the game.

This isn't just my 4 friends too, this is a hot topic on the Steam community hub and in general there's mass confusion among all the new players. They need some guidance, they shouldn't need to figure everything out like Dark Souls. A bit more effort from Bungie in guiding the Kinder Guardians directly in the game would be appreciated, I feel like New Light was implemented very lazily as if they didn't really expect any new players to start playing. A simple thing such as milestones for all campaign missions, starting with Red War, could help these new players a lot in figuring out what to do.

TLDR; New players have no clue what to do as Bungie has made an outstanding move and tucked away all old campaigns in a dark corner of the tower (Amanda Holliday). They are not guided to her or even told she is the source of old campaigns.

EDIT: I'm fully aware Bungie have made New Light players skip Red War, CoO and Warmind so they can jump right into the new DLC or Forsaken. However this is exactly what's causing the confusion. Most of them are simply not aware of that because they've never played the game before, and most of them certainly aren't going to immediately drop £30 on a new expansion for a F2P game they're trying out.

Also putting the previous stories on Amanda Holliday of all NPCs was a stupid idea. Most New Light players complaining of confusion had trouble finding her and weren't aware that she was the source of previous stories. They aren't guided to her or even told she is the source of old campaigns, Ikora or Zavala would have made more sense.

EDIT 2: People still commenting that new light is fine and new players just need to "be less stupid", please take a stroll through the comments or the steam community hub, thanks

The loot pool needs to be updated to include all world drop legendary sets.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:20 AM PDT

Note since I can't edit title: More referring to those sets being equal chance to drop from all world drop activities. Y1 armor should be at equal chance to drop as Y2 armor from any world drop source, not limited planetary activities that still have abysmal chances of dropping the armor.

Expansion, super fun. Planetary special enemies and conditional chests, awesome addition that makes it feel like D1. Addition of every armor set being 2.0, beyond my expectations. Getting nothing but Tangled Web and Prodigal set pieces from world drops and powerful engrams, not fun or exciting.

It seems as though the loot pool for world drops was left untouched (except the previously Playstation exclusive moon set that always drops on the moon) and functions as it did for Y2. Converted every piece of armor that has ever been in the game to Armor 2.0 and all I am still getting is Prodigal and Tangled Web set pieces no matter my destination. It sucks nothing new was really added to the loot pool already, why make it worse to only include Forsaken drops?

Can we get the Y1 armor added into the world drop loot pool?

Destiny 2 Subclass, Guns and other Symbols in your Steam and in-game name!

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:56 AM PDT

So recently a friend of mine found a person with the Chaos Reach symbol in their name and we were very intrigued.

We then proceeded to investigate, and in the game files under 'fonts' we found a file called '"Destiny_Symbols_PC" and once I downloaded it and opened a word document, went to insert symbols, I discovered that we can in fact use a bunch of symbols from in the game in our names simply by putting them in our steam names and it will show the actual symbol in the game! Example: https://imgur.com/rqMYiE2 (This is using the Sentinal Shield Symbol!)

TLDR: Go to your Destiny 2 game files -> fonts -> Destiny_Symbols_PC -> open and download it -> open word -> select the font -> go to symbols -> insert them -> copy and paste the ones you like into your steam name -> Enjoy!

Edit: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ucHNitRochZBEG33W9ZTKK9qdkwAIWK5 New Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bebqlf6jynbb5l0/Destiny%202%20Symbols.rar?dl=0 Here are the font files and a list of the "cooler" symbols for those of you who are on console. (Now updated with the Destiny 1 Font and symbols!)

Edit 2: You can also access some of the legacy Destiny 1 symbols by downloading the "360" package as well.

Edit 3: Thanks for the Gold kind stranger! Also, Thanks to u/SofiFoxi for the web version of these symbols! https://uwu.blue/destiny/ Now you can simply copy and past them from this site.

Exotic Armor needs to have no element

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:15 PM PDT

Exotic armor needs to be universal and not be restricted to elements.

    1. Super unlikely to get the exotic armor you want to drop with how rares exotics are, on top of needing a correct element to drop outside of the default one pulled from collections.
    2. With the extreme cost of THREE ascendant golf balls to max masterwork exotic armors, its asking for A LOT to MW that then have to MW for another element you want

Content creators are almost unanimously complaining about SBMM in pvp

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:00 AM PDT

And honestly I couldn't be happier, it really gives me a perverse sense of joy!

Before you bring out the pitchforks just hear me out.

I love watching some pvp creators like TV, Coolguy, Cammy to name a few. They're really entertaining and I learn some valuable tips from them. But there are a LOT of pvp content creators (who I will not name but we all know of at least a few of them) who thrive off of sweating in quickplay and acting like pvp Gods. Honestly if I see one more hc/snipe quickplay montage I'm going to vomit.

Now that they have to deal with SBMM for the majority of the playlists they can't pub stomp on us poor unsuspecting newbs that just want to get their daily or weekly done without suffering. Seems like they can't handle tastes of their own medicine.

Edit: one thing to clarify for those who might be in a similar boat, if you think you're "not good" but consistently place in the top 2 or 3 on the leader board in quickplay and have no problem reaching >3k glory in past seasons then I have news for you: you're probably much better than you think and SBMM is going to rank you high. Sorry.

Edit 2: SBMM= skill based match making. Basically same as elo. But Bungie's formula is different. Also, it's on a bell curve, meaning connection issues effect all players on both extremes. SBMM is not selectively punishing good players by forcing even skilled matchmaking while rewarding bad players with better connection strengths.

Shadowkeep doesn't have a real campaign

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:42 AM PDT

The campaign for Shadowkeep is NOT A CAMPAIGN.

It is an introduction to the story that is going to continue to develop over this next year. If the ending felt abrupt to you that's because IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

The story will next move into the raid and the Vex Offensive, at the end of this month we'll get the dungeon, and at the end of the season the first story thread with the Black Garden will lead into next season's story.

I have to remind everybody that Bungie specifically stated multiple times in advance that Destiny is no longer developed for the casual players who leave the game 1 day after playing it. Destiny is an MMO now, the game and world is going to evolve and change with time and if you didn't expect this or don't like this then Bungie didn't make this for you.

I just did a 920 nightfall at 900 and my mind was blown from the recent changes.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:29 PM PDT

So as from the title, I was a bit hungry for exotics and decided to do a 920 power nightfall at 900 power. I was expecting the average nightfall experience. Chaos, blindly rushing points, spraying everything down with recluse and mountaintop, etc. But for the first time because of recent changes, I noticed something amazing.

I was a titan, and my two friends were a warlock and hunter. The beginning was traditional nightfall, chaotic, destructive, and lacking shape. But then came out first overload champion. We actually worked together to stop it, with one of us calling that they had an overload mod to stun it, and we all gunned it down.

We kept going, and I progressively began to notice that the ads weren't just ads anymore, they were actual enemies that we had to push through. Weapons were no longer just laser beams of death, and everything felt much more difficult, and required coordination.

By the middle part of the nightfall it hit me why It felt so different. I had realized that i was instinctively popping towering barricades to cover sides filled with adds, and that by the middle of the nightfall, my teammates were actually... following me? For the first time since before overpowered weapons and armor, I was a titan again. I was calling the shots, fortifying positions with my barricades, all the whole my warlock was raining death from above with voidwalker, and our hunter was using his invisibility to assassinate targets with his shotgun.

By the boss, it was everything I had dreamed of. I was leading our team, granting overshields, pointing to new spots of cover that were constantly shifting in the boss room, fortifying, calling boss DPS phase with my bubbles, holding the team together. And the rest of my fireteam were doing exactly what their classes were made to do as well.

I think the changes made in shadowkeep and to difficulty in terms of damage numbers and adds weren't just for QoL, but they introduced a part of the game that every player should experience. Every raid and nightfall should feel like this, and bungie absolutely nailed it with shadowkeep.

I'm reading and hearing a lot about how new players don't really know how to start their journey as Guardians. I'm happy to help any new players that need it. I'm sure this sub is packed with others who feel the same way. As such, there should be some sort of mechanism in-game that allows me to opt-in to a sort of "Guide Guardian" status. Perhaps we can make it a title that new players can see and know that that player is there to answer questions, provide guidance or explain systems or mechanics. There's so much we take for granted as experienced players. I had a player message a lobby I was in yesterday asking what a Lost Sector is. It made me realize that there is no clear way for a new player to know that. There's dozens of examples of these types of bits and pieces to the Destiny world that players should have an easy, in-game source to get answers to.

I like a Title for this because I can take it off if I'm running activities where I can't or don't wish to be bothered but if I'm running bounties, sure I'll help where I can. A larger player base benefits everyone.

Thank you Bungo for bringing back the creep-factor when going deeper in the Moon

    Well done, Bungie.

Not going to throw in any details or spoiler-esque things... but DAMN! Near the end of campaign (I forget the mission name) when you go deeper into the Moon and the sounds kick in, legit creeped out.

    10/10 would be scared again.

Can we get a “random” option for our finishers?

I know it's gonna get really repetitive seeing the same finisher over and over again so if we can have a random option that selects one of the finishers we have unlocked at random to be used similar to titanfall 2 with executions, that would be very nice.

Can we appreciate the voice acting done by Nolan North?

Serious skills on his part. He makes the ghost feel unsettled and distressed, and don't even get me started on his work in the later parts of the story. Good job done by him.
