    This Week in /r/DestinyTheGame History [2018/12/15 - 2018/12/21]

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller

True back then, true today. Life does move pretty fast, just as posts move pretty fast on /r/DestinyTheGame. Once a week, "This Week in /r/DestinyTheGame History" brings you some of the gems from this time last year. It's a walk down memory lane to give some perspective of where we were and how things have (or haven't) changed in the last trip around the Sun.

Maybe you made the post, maybe you saw the post, maybe you missed the post. Relive it or discover it for the first time. Either way, we hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

    1. Gambit games are too long for the rewards they offer. Round 3 should be a "sudden death" mode where the primeval is instantly summoned for both sides to make things quicker
    2. Petition to remove the sleeper and telesto catalysts from the raid lairs, and add them to the loot pools of escalation protocol, and blind well, respectively.
    3. GAMBIT: The Small Blocker Phalanx is harder to kill and a bigger pain in the ass than the Medium Knight and Large Ogre.
    4. Can we get rid of that bug when applying a shader, ornament or whatever, it cancels when the bar is almost full.
    5. Why do fallen get such a good internet connection?
    6. I will never stop instinctively taking cover after killing a shrieker.
    7. To all the Xbox Guardians in the Gofannon Forge last night, I am truly sorry.
    8. Bungie, if I unlocked the forge on one character, I should have it available on all 3.
    9. (Spoiler) The massive story detail that came out yesterday is not a negative plot point in any way.
    10. Is Bungie ever gonna fix the bug where the Red Team always wins in Gambit
    11. Nova Bomb should have a large explosion radius than Nova Warp: Change my mind.
    12. If Handheld Supernova can OHK, a precision Throwing Knife should too.
    13. Bring back D2Y1 armor/weapons with random perks.
    14. Fuck Scorn Abominations
    15. Why do we have to go back to Ada-1 in the tower to hand in the matrix so we can THEN go to the forge?
    16. Why do we leave the Tower without full ammo?
    17. Bungie are duplicating sparrow models to fill up the Eververse loot pool.
    18. Knife Flip Emote Shouldn't End
    19. I got an offer for a free stack of 200 business cards. Can't say I regret it
    20. I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for a lore-heavy high-quality Vex-themed DLC/Raid/Expansion.

Opinion: Locking Anti-Barrier rounds to specific weapons ruins the game

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:36 PM PST

Anti-Barrier and Overload rounds should be global mods. Equippable on any weapon with mod slots. Now In order to even have a chance in a 950 Nightfall, I have to take a bow, scout rifle, or pulse rifle. If I don't want to take one of those. Oh well, you're gonna have a bad time.

Add on top of that, that I can't even use exotic weapons of those archetypes, and now I have to carry a legendary that I wouldn't normally use in a locked loadout activity.

The whole setup is very inflexible and ruins the game in my opinion.

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback. I certainly do not mean to imply that my opinion is the only valid one, it's just how I feel. I have a certain load out I really like to run. And yes, "ruin" was a bit of hyperbole, but it takes me out of the game in a way.

The First Corridors of Time mission is an example of what I've always wanted from this game. [Spoilers]

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:59 AM PST

Fighting side by side with Saint as a Siegebreaker felt nothing short of poetic. I was able to get a shield and weapons of light from his bubble, so that was pretty cool. All the dialogue up to meeting him was great. "I've seen Dregs eat children" in particular shook me because I've always seen dregs as weak, this put the Fallen in a whole other light that only skilled narrative can do. Then the hologram of the city and Ghost talking about it reminded me that there's a world I'm in, not just a looter shooter but a world with history, change and decay.

I know you're trying to branch away from Halo, it's important to look forward, not behind, however this felt like some of my favorite Halo levels with NPC interaction. Your team is full of wonderful lore writers and story tellers, but I prefer to see and experience, not read haha.

This game is awesome, Bungie. You're nifty. Thanks.

Edit: took a nap and woke up trending. So that's cool. Also this is my first trending post ever. I'm supposed to say thank you for the silver yes? Thanks random internet civilian. You are also nifty.

Edit 2: I've seen a fair amount of comments asking how I Accessed the mission. If I'm being honest, I just finished every quest step and bounty the game put in front of me and then once I didn't have any more, I accessed the Sundial next to Osiris in "patrol" mode and it started the mission up. My Obelisks were only level 5 and 1, and I had only run the Sundial event like twice, so I don't think that's it. Sorry I don't remember more. There's also a bug where you have to exit the conversation and re enter it sometimes for an extra step, or maybe you are just needing to inspect the sundial in patrol mode. Either way, good luck! Might also need to be on the first character you completed the tasks on.

I have no love for my Ghost.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:37 AM PST

It speaks in my stead 99% of the time and makes me feel like I'm playing a game about being a puppet for a flying drone, not a game about becoming an undying hero, that fights to protect humanity from its enemies.

It has a voice of its own, its ideas become "my" ideas, its advice becomes law.

I wish I could be free of it, because I don't think we are a "team", but I, its follower.

P.S.: Thank you, kind guardians for these golden tokens. I shall melt and coat my armor with them. If you see a golden Titan trying to punch things he shouldn't, that's probably me. Say hello! (Thercio, on PC)

Can we not talk about how people are using arbalest? It’s for a quest, nobody cares,

Exotic armor should have a Universal Mod slot.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:55 PM PST

Whether it's an Opulent Mod, Outlaw, Black Armory, Hive or Fallen mod... Exotics should be able to slot them. It will make them feel more exotic. And since there's no word on Armor Catalyst's I feel like it would be a good compromise.

Tips to efficiently complete the Saviour Seal

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:09 PM PST

Let's get together a list of tips to help everyone complete all the great new quests and weapons that season of dawn has to offer efficiently. I've also included the new catalysts although they aren't necessary for the seal.

    • Use Lord of Wolves in Gambit to earn Python and progress your catalyst at the same time. Once your catalyst is complete, switch to using Acrius or Tractor Cannon as your Heavy.

    • Pull Drang from collections, to efficiently complete your Sidearm and Solar (Weapon) kills in strikes. Play 920 Nightfalls, which offer a high points potential with easier kills.

    • Use Arbalest in Crucible with linear fusion mods for better access to ammo for your Komodo kills.

    • Use Black Talon in Sundial and Story missions to complete your catalyst quickly.

    • Pick up timelost weapon bounties and obelisk weekly bounties before progressing any vanguard, crucible, sundial or gambit. These will passively complete over your week.

Hopefully, with the above tips, you can spend less time playing the core playlists and more time playing the fun new story missions, exotic quests, and the sundial!

    Saint-14 (Art by Brian Moncus)

With all the talk about the Psion Flayer cloaks, what about the Shield Brothers armor for Titans? One of the minibosses in the Sundial is literally just Mau'ual

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:37 PM PST

Title. One of the bosses in the Vex/Cabal part in the Mercury past, can't remember what it was called, is just Mau'ual from the Shield Brothers strike. In D1, you could get some sick armor from them.

Lot of talk about the Flayers, what about this guy?

"Heavy Handed" mod is broken, it allows you to generate unlimimted special ammo

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 01:45 PM PST

First, you need to level up your obelisk on Tangled Shore to rank 7 to unlock the "Heavy Handed" mod. This mod has a secondary perk which gives you shotgun/ fusion rifle/ sidearm/ smg ammo whenever you defeat enemies with a shotgun/ fusion rifle/ sidearm/ smg while being surrounded at least by 2 enemies. All you need to activate this perk is to equip another arc mod (e.q. arc resistent, shotgun ammo finder,...) and you don't even need the charge of light buff.

Here is the trick: If you equip a kinetic and energy shotgun and defeat an enemy both shotguns will get ammo. This allows you to run double shotgun in Gambit if you trying to get Python. But that's not all, you don't need to use the same gun type, every combination of the guns listed above works (e.g. Exit Strategy + Lord of Wolves). Keep in mind that you cannot use this to generate heavy ammo for 1K or Tractor Cannon but use those guns to generate special ammo.

Got to hand it to Bungie, they made that Saint-14 mission very dark and disturbing with one simple line, I have never rushed to a NPC's aid quicker.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:39 AM PST

Saint 14 is under attack, he is telling us about the House of Rain with extreme anger and sadness in his voice. I'm hustling along and trying to get to him, impressed by the voice acting and how about to meet this legend.

Then he mentions that he saw Dregs eating children.

I've been playing Destiny for 5 years, I've read the lore and yeah it's fun and interesting but to hear those words spoken was kind of unsettling (in a good way) and my Titan (who I wish could still Titan Skate) rushed to Saint 14's aid as quick as his heavily armored ass can carry him. Now I wanted pay back and I wanted to kill all these fallen, not just for the mission completion but because of all the kids that were eaten.

    Funny story for you

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:30 AM PST

Remember that Centurion Oryx took right after you landed on the Dreadnaught? Then the Centurion and that Taken Ogre tried to stop you from killing the King? Didn't work. So the Centurion's Bond-Brothers are pretty angry they lost their commander. They're leading a team to blow the Dreadnaught's core. The core goes, most of the system goes with it. You're gonna make sure that doesn't happen.

Can the Lumina catalyst add self-heal to the Blessing of the Sky effect?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST

I thought from the beginning that self-heal was a necessity for the Lumina to be a viable weapon, but it seems like it would be the ideal candidate for the perk in the future catalyst.

XP Farm (30,000xp in 6 mins)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:49 PM PST

    Location: Shuro Chi Checkpoint

    Class: Hunter, Tether, Orpheus

    Length: 6 minutes

    XP: ~30,000 (5 bounties, 4k base XP)

Level Speed: 20 mins per Season Pass level

    Cost: 20,000 glimmer (5 bounties + 1 Raid banner)

With the addition of repeatable Banshee bounties, this method seems to be the quickest XP farm for me. I was able to repeatably get all 5 bounties done in under 6 minutes. Once a day you can also get the daily 4 bounties for an additional 30k. Using this

There are 6 advanced bounties total: Pulse, Scout, Bow, Linear Fusion Rifle, Rocket, Sniper

    Video Proof:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lbip5SUFmU (full video)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGAmYjJpFu0 (46 sec version)

I know people swear by the Moon Lost Sector bounties, or the Whisper Thrall room. But I can't get quicker than this for either. Please share video if you can!

    Downsides:

-The first time each week you have to put in that long code for the wishing wall. That adds like 10 minutes.

-Hunter is needed for the quickest time

-It costs one Raid banner each time (5k glimmer, 3 shards)

    Tips for Success:

-Don't tether the taken bubble that spawns enemies. It will eat your tether.

-Wait a second before shooting tethered enemies to ensure your super is being filled.

-ONLY tether if you're going to be getting a fresh batch of taken thrall, otherwise you won't get full super back.

The PvE DPS/Damage chart has been Updated for Season of the Dawn - Now Including a more accurate DPS metric.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:33 PM PST

    Hey!

Normally, I'd have the link to the sheet here first things first. But this update post is going to be a bit involved, and I'd like you to read the main features of it. A TL:DR is found at the bottom.

Season of the Dawn Balance Changes

With Season of the Dawn, we got two major balance changes, to Xenophase and LFRs (except you Sleeper, you don't get this [idk why] ).

In-game testing shows that both were increased by the exact values bungie listed. Xenophage now has.. actually okay damage output. For being hitscan, and requiring no precision, it's in a pretty fine spot for this regard.

Linear Fusions (sans Sleeper) got a much needed buff. I'm not sure if it was by enough though. At base, these weapons still underpreform pretty heavily compared to our other DPS options, while still requiring precision and charge time. It does result in the Precision LFR's having more total damage than even Catalyst Sleeper, which is pretty hilarious

    The New DPS Pages

    The old

The current pages that I've had on my sheet represent what they aim to just fine. However, there is an issue with them, and that is down to the math of what was tested on the SUSTAIN Pages. These values do not take into account reserves, or the fact that the first magazine is "free" - in the sense that it starts fully loaded, and does not need to reload. They also assume infinite reserves, which is something that is just not accurate to in-game performance. It remains a solid metric to see how important reload-speed buffs are too different weapons; but it's not a good way to look at in-game DPS performance across reserves.

    The new

Over the past month or so, I've worked on a better method

Three new pages are found in the sheet. These are simply labeled "X Weapon DPS". They present to you all Three DPS Types that the other sheets present (Burst, Sustain, and "Average"). They include the total damage you'll deal, the time to empty all reserves, and the damage per shot of the weapon.

The new metric in them, is "Average DPS". Average DPS simulates the total time it takes to actually empty the reserves - reloads included - and using that time to find DPS.

Average DPS Represents In-Game performance, in a manner that is far more accurate than Sustain is. The third type, BURST, is still accurate for the first mag (so extremely short damage phases, I suppose?).

    Documentation of "Average DPS"

In this section, I will be explaining the math and processes behind finding my "Time To Empty" - as this is the main metric for calculating our Average DPS.

You don't need to read this, but this is for documentations sake.

To start with, I make two assumptions.

    • Weapons Start with a full magazine
    • You will only shoot full magazines

This is done for the sake of a fair comparison across the board. If a gun had to do a full reload, just to fire a tenth of it's mag - it's DPS would be brutally less than one that reloaded a full mag.

To Begin - We take the QUOTIENT of (Reserves / Magazines). This returns us the number of FULL magazines to be fired (for some guns, I round this up to 2 (1KV and Prospector as my example of this)). I will call this "MagsToEmpty".

With MagsToEmpty, I also take this and turn it into our "Simulated Total Damage" - this is used later, and is simply

Total Damage = (MagsToEmpty * MagSize * Damage Per Shot)

From this, we find the time it takes to empty each magazine (-1 bullet per mag as that one is fired frame 0 of the new mag)

    ((MagsToEmpty)*(MagSize-1))/(Firerate/60)

..then add the time it takes to reload the weapon (minus 1 mag as it's already loaded when we start)

    Time To Empty = ((Reload Speed * [reload speed buffs]) * (MagsToEmpty-1)) + ((MagsToEmpty)*(MagSize-1))/(Firerate/60)

To which, we just divide (Total Damage / Time To Empty).

    TL;DR

The DPS Sheet has been updated for Season of the Dawn Values

A page can be found for each weapon type, labeled simply "[Type] Weapon DPS". This page includes all the previous types of DPS, and a new one which more accurately represents in-game performance. Use these numbers going into the future.

The sheet can be found via this link

Charged With Light seems like kind of an interesting mechanic that I will never really use.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:33 PM PST

Remember when Bungie said they were going to let players play their guardians exactly how they want, tweaked to perfection? That sounds great on paper but when they've made several prerequisites stacked up as a barriers to getting your loadout, I find it's just empty sentiment. I like to play different specs from time to time and roll with different load-outs to keep things fresh. However, the cost of some of these new mods is questionably high, requiring masterworking to maximize benefits.

And masterworking anything is a grind far beyond what I am capable of, if it means accommodating multiple different elements for changing load-outs. And then you factor in that next season will just be a whole different mod slot anyway and I'm coming to the point where I just can't really give a shit about seasonal armor or its mods anymore.

If we have to grind obelisks stuff to get the mods, why put their energy economy at such a premium to make it so we also have to grind to masterwork some seasonal gear in order to use our normal old mods too?

Can we get a season where we feed the dreadnaught to the allmighty?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 06:21 AM PST

    I wanna see what happens.

Edit: I Don't mean the leviathan. I want to shoot the hive ship into the sun.

Edit 2: It just occurred to me that this might not be the best idea. If we shoot the hive into the sun, it could go super nova. After all, we do not know the density of the Hadium and Chitin mix, or how much damage was done to the sun. However, I have an alternative idea. We park the almighty next to the big dead ship. When the evil triangles show up, we succ the dead ship and shoot the pieces at the triangles like a giant leaf blower, destroying them forever.

The problem with lfg isn't toxic kwtd posts

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:44 AM PST

It's people who join posts that say Know what to do and yet they have no understanding on how to do it. They won't even watch a video they'll say "I don't know what going on at all" I'll try to teach them but it gets fustrating spending 4 hours on freaking calus because someone can't stop dying to ads when I'm the only one hitting pisons specifically so they don't die. Even when trying to cheese riven people will join my posts with a blue grenade launcher and Arabalest and say "Is my dps good?" NO IT'S TERRIBLE IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY DECENT WEAPONS YOU SHOULDN'T BE TRYING TO RAID. It's a pinnacle activity and no one should be forced to carry people through because they can't grasp a concept as get in a room otherwise Kali will kill you.

Hey Bungie, if Shaxx can call Mercy when one team is winning too hard, can he call a timeout if the number of players on the other team drops to half or less?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 09:07 PM PST

Because it's really fucking fun to start a match 6 on 3 and be obliterated for 8 minutes before mercy finally kicks in.

EDIT: To clarify, timeout doesn't mean stand around and do nothing until the game finds people, just have time and score suspended temporarily.

It is absolutely absurd how long it takes to be able to equip new weapons on console.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:18 AM PST

I watch PC videos seeing people able to switch their weapons between lives, I can't switch between rounds

Edit 7: Before you make a comment read EVERY edit. People are commenting way before reading my explanation and how I worded it wrong. Like I said the first edit is not me explaining that I don't want one, it's people continue to comment "get an SSD" and that's it. If you have something to add about why to get an SSD then go ahead and say it. Repeating what someone else said without anything to add is completely useless. I am not going to drastically change my edits because then some of the comments won't make sense. I will no longer respond or bring my take on comments that continue to comment early.

Edit: Stop telling me to get an SSD, multiple people have already said it. I shouldn't need an extra piece of equipment to enjoy a game I have spent hundreds of dollars on.

Edit 2: To avoid confusion from the previous edit, I'm telling people to stop telling me about SSD's literally the one of the top comments mentions it. If you have more reason to give about getting an SSD then go ahead and comment on it. Don't give the same reasons others are giving.

Edit 3: I'm not asking for advice, I'm stating that the loading times on inventory is taking too long. Casual players will 9/10 not buy an SSD for destiny.

Edit 4: I will try and respond to as many people as I can but if I make a point I will not restate it in another comment.

Edit 5: Never mind that was not the last edit. I am being unclear about this. I now understand why an SSD will help and I will probably get one, thank you! I'm obviously leaning towards the casual player base because they are the majority (I am not part of that majority). This post was so I can reach out to bungie and to see the communities opinion on these extended loading times and why they might need to be fixed. I am not trying to act mean to others as I find every opinion and point valid. Also I'm extremely exhausted/tired so that's probably why half of these things sound weird or wrong.

Edit 6: Is there any reasons not to get an SSD? Just want to know.
