2019 Best of /r/DestinyTheGame Awards - Nominations and Voting

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:35 AM PST

    Hello Guardians!

Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into the year 2020. As such, tradition dictates that we celebrate the best of what made our community thrive in 2019.

Many of you have been around for our end of year awards before, while there are also a lot of newcomers since Destiny 2 hit Steam and went freemium. For both groups, there will be a lot of new things in the 2019 edition of the awards.

For one, we are not giving away Gold as part of the awards. Why? Because we missed the deadline with the admins. That's on me.

To apologize for this oversight, I have decided, in my capacity as Awards Potentate of Vanguard, to go mostly full meme with the awards categories this year. In the past, we've been limited by our prize pool. No longer! We have a bunch of new categories to make things very fun for you.

    Here's how this goes:

    1. Review the categories.
    2. Find a post or comment which meets the requirements of a category.
    3. Check to make sure said post or comment has not already been nominated for that category. If they have already, upvote the comment. If not, move to step 4.
    4. Reply to the category's nomination thread with a link to the post or comment in question.
    5. Vote for other nominees you think deserve recognition.
    6. Don't make a top level comment. It will be removed.

    And now for the categories

Media Post of the Year (Serious)

Was it media? Was it serious? Was it outstanding? Note: The award goes to the creator of the media, not the poster.

Media Post of the Year (Funny)

Was it media? Was it not serious? Was it outstanding? Note: The award goes to the creator of the media, not the poster.

    Lore Post of the Year

Awarded to the poster which provided the best post about the lore of Destiny in 2019.

    Post of the Year

The Granddaddy of the All. The overall most excellent post on /r/DestinyTheGame in 2019.

Suggestion of the Year broken out into subcategories this year because y'all have a lot of suggestions.

    Best General Suggestion

    Best Guns & Armor Suggestion

    Best Perks & Mods Suggestion

    Best Subclass Related Suggestion

    Best User Experience Suggestion

    Best PVE Suggestion

    Best PVP Suggestion

Best Post Nobody Saw Because Everybody Upvoted Suggestions Instead

Exactly what it sounds like. Posts must have fewer than 10 points to be considered.

Best "I'm super busy but got Recluse anyway" Story

Yes, we went full meme on this one.

    Best Joke

I'm not defining best. Make of that what you wish.

    Worst Joke

Did it elicit a groan? Was the "budum tiss" implied?

    Most Adorable Kinderguardian

If you read a post or comment and your inner monologue went "Oh my sweet summer child..." immediately, this is the category for that.

    SGA of the Year

The post that provided the superest goodest advice in 2019

    The Mistakes Were Made Award

Maybe it's somebody crashing their Sparrow and causing a massive explosion. Maybe it's somebody ruining a deathless raid clear by stepping in front of an ally's rocket on the final encounter. Mistakes were made.

The megamanexe4 Special Services to the Subreddit Award

Awarded to the user who went above and beyond to help /r/DestinyTheGame in 2019. Note: Moderators are not eligible for the award, unless they were not moderators at the time of the event in question.

The Craysh Memorial Award (previously Guide of the Year)

For those of you who never got to know Craysh, he was a fantastic member of the community who spent hours and hours scouring the internet for every known bit of information on upcoming Destiny content. His Taken King pre-release info guides were so good that we gave him wiki permissions on the subreddit to build out entire pages with known info. He tragically passed away a few years ago and we decided as a moderator team to rename our Guide of the Year Award in his memory. Rest in peace, Guardian.

Nominations and voting will proceed until January 21st, after which the thread will be locked and the mods will tabulate the results. The post is in contest mode to hide vote counts.

I had a dream Bungie made a "reverse raid" and it was genuinely one of the coolest experiences I'll never have.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:55 AM PST

TL;DR Version - I dreamt there was a raid starting with the boss fight that was too powerful to actually beat, so the bulk of the raid was GTFO'ing until we could get to a point where the boss could be nuked. Everything below is my (probably inadequate) attempt to share it all.

It all started when we got some mysterious signal from that hunk of rock attached to Drifter's ship. I don't remember if the worrying commentary came from Drifter, Ikora, or Eris but one of them thought it'd be a good idea if we went to check it out and deal with whatever was going on. Our raid team wound up on the shores of Unknown Space, rallied up, and hopped in. The place we appeared at looked like it was going to be a boss arena, then lo and behold some big-name Taken boss appears with a plethora of adds.

The odd part is that it became vulnerable after the adds were killed and then at half health it just died like it self-destructed. Even Ghost remarks that he's never seen Taken just stop like that. Moments later, though, and Ghost begins to scream in pain: "It's happening again...RUN!" And like a spectre out of a Dickens novel the true boss just appears: it's the robed figure we saw in the Pyramid and the Garden made manifest. It speaks through our now-corrupted Ghost: "Come and embrace salvation."

This Avatar of Darkness is totally invulnerable: no weapons, abilities, or supers harm it to any degree. All we do is draw light mockery from it right before it does a sudden shift to one of our raid team members and traps him in a bubble. The debuff reads "Taken by Darkness" right before he disappears into a shadow realm where he has to survive endless waves of Taken adds of all sorts. The rest of us find an exit, but it isn't the way we came in and we have to begin a forced withdrawal. Encouraging this flight is a creeping darkness that spreads and debuffs everyone else.

Escaping turns into a challenge when the "path" turns out to be a jumping puzzle on par with Whisper or Zero Hour, with Taken enemies harassing us along the way. If we're too slow the Creeping Darkness catches up and Takes another raid team member. If we die along the way there's virtually no time to go back and resurrect them. The only respite we get is when the Nine intervene and tear a hole in their own realm, bringing a conduit of pure Light. Using the Light drives the Darkness back enough to un-Take our teammates and let us rally again.

The next couple of "encounters" are a mix of jumping puzzles, actual puzzles, and minor bosses blocking our way while other teammates get their turn being Taken and the Avatar continues to pursue us. Again, the only respite we get is by using the pure Light whenever the Nine intervene. The final "encounter" is a wave of minor bosses right before the Avatar catches up, at which point we are back on the Shore and able to make a stand by using multiple sources of Light to overwhelm the Avatar before being pulled out of Unknown Space and back to relative safety.

It was a hair-raising experience, legitimately terrifying and thrilling, and was so far off the beaten path it felt like we were pioneering a new way of playing Destiny: not just going to places and shooting the lads, actually encountering ancient evils that we're not equipped to fight and need to come back to another day.

EDIT 1: I would be super flattered if Bungie adopted this, but I'm not sure they would and I'm not sure if there are now legal barriers to it (intellectual property laws involving fandoms are admittedly beyond me, so who knows).

EDIT 2: HOLY CRAP THANKS FOR THE PLATINUM!!!

EDIT 3: I'm incredibly gratified that y'all like this as much as you do. Keep being awesome!

EDIT 4: When I posted this I never imagined it'd get such an overwhelming response. Thank you guys for the positive reactions, and here's hoping Bungie does something with this after all!

EDIT 5: Put "adds" into text.

Lack of ways to reliably obtain high-stat armor feels wrong and is holding back a lot of potential in this game.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:13 PM PST

Armor 2.0 was a great step forward for Destiny. More stats to build around, (almost) fully customizable mod slots, and universal ornamentation are great things that we ought to acknowledge.

However, the main chase of many veteran and post-pinnacle players such as myself is getting high-end armor rolls to fit various builds. As of right now, the best way to farm high stat gear is to run every raid every week and cross your fingers. Armor that drops from planetary vendors? Consistently sub-53. Armor that drops from Gambit, Crucible, and Strikes? Not only are post-activity legendary drops rare as hell (a topic for another post), but they are rarely above 55. I'm a gambit freak, and in my playtime since Shadowkeep, I've only gotten ONE armor piece above 55, and it was 58.

With the release of Legend Sundial this reset, I was hoping for it to reliably drop high-stat versions of the Righteous armor set, allowing for more varied builds with the incredible Dawn armor mods aside from the high stat rolls available from the later tiers of the season pass. However, a few runs has confirmed my worries that that armor still rarely reaches the mid-50's. Looks like I'm stuck with the void affinity Dawn mods forever unless RNG blesses me a couple hundred times.

If there was a way to farm for high-stat pieces of gear for every set (Weekly bounties per vendor that GUARANTEE a piece of armor at or above 58 is one idea a clanmate had), I would stick to the game for a while longer knowing that I'm not wasting my time doing strikes or the seasonal activity looking for armor that just can't stand up to the pieces I lucked out on months ago.

TL;DR: We need ways to obtain high stat rolls on every set in the game, period. "Wear what you want" can only work when every armor set can roll the same stats.

Bungie, please put perks that make sense on the right weapon types. Why is Grave Robber even a perk on so many scout and pulse rifles?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:17 AM PST

Grave robber is only a useful perk on close range weapons like shotguns and maybe SMGs and sidearms. Yet it is a random perk on 6 pulse rifles, 5 scout rifles, 3 hand cannons and no less than 10 auto rifles.

Same goes for another great close range perk: Threat detector. Probably my favourite perk to get on a SMG, but simply horrible on any mid- to long range weapon. Yet it rolls on multiple mid- to long range weapons like scouts, pulse rifles, hand cannons and even rocket launchers and bows! Why?

Tap the trigger, a perk that would be great on every weapon where you actually need to "tap the trigger" like scouts, pulse rifles and hand cannons is not found on not a single scout, pulse or hand cannon in the entire game! Yet it is found on a lot of weapons where you don't need to tap the trigger a lot like SMGs, auto rifles, fusion rifles and machine guns. Now it doesn't make the perk bad on those weapons. TTT is considered great on especially fusion rifles. But it is just mind blowing it is not found on more weapon types where you actually need to tap the trigger.

And people might say that Tap the trigger would be OP on a scout. But it is not considered OP on a sidearm… And this would also make the "God roll" pool a bit bigger. Right now it is a really boring pool: kill clip, rampage, swashbuckler and multikillclip are the most named ones. So by adding TTT on scouts, pulse rifles and hand cannons, people can go for either damage dealing god rolls or consistency god rolls.

I can go on: Zen moment should be a perk on every single auto rifle, pulse rifle and SMG that gets released.

Another in my opinion weird thing in the game: Whenever steady rounds or accurized rounds is an option on a weapon, for some reason ricochet rounds and high-caliber rounds are rarely found. And vice versa. But these 4 perks are probably the most sought after perks in the second column. Just add them to all weapons where it makes sense! That way there is more diversity and more possible God rolls.

Bungie, please make it so that every weapon that gets released in future seasons has a perk pool that makes sense.

    Thank you!

One thing I really appreciated about the devils ruin quest is that it was basically in game lore

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 08:02 AM PST

I already knew about some of it from reading the lore, but I feel like this mission is huge for people that don't know a lot about destiny or wanted more backstory. Reminded me of the caydes messages mission. Great work.

A Deep Dive into the worst 2 Raid teams ever (and how to avoid becoming them)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:39 PM PST

Yeah sure these 2 teams are famous, but for all the wrong reasons.

Team 1: The First Crota Fireteam. Members:

Vel Tarlow - (the one friend you like the company of, but is ass at raids) Time spent alive in the raid: 30ish seconds.

Toland - (the quiet guy who has only watched videos on it and is only there for his quest; Zero communication) Time spent alive: about an hour

Eriana - (the person who throws the moment shit hits the fan) Time spent alive: 45ish minutes

Eris - (the hopeless bright eyed fellow who realizes that she's probably the most capable; the only one Toland didnt mute) Time alive; backed out after everyone fucking died

Omar - (The guy who packed his lunch; reloaded his weapons, and made a build that would absolutely kick ass) Time spent alive; 5ish minutes trying to solo a part because everyone overwhelmed and Vel fucking died

Sai mota - (average player who was stuck asking what things did because the team wouldn't tell her) Time spent alive; 1 hour

What went wrong? No communication. No understanding of the mechanics. Vel fucking died. Toland didnt unmute anyone and Eris had a hard time communicating his info to the group.

    Score: 3/10

It's easier to communicate what went wrong with the second group. The first Vault squad.

Kabr literally assumed the "6" was a recommendation but not required, and went in blind.

Praedyth got the gorgon gaze one too many times (maybe he should had listened and equipped burst glide)

Pahanan backed out after Kabr ran off and drank vex milk (the degenerate) and after Praedyth fucking died (should have listened)

What went wrong? They literally didn't watch Datto's guide and failed because of it. I bet they didnt even know they could push the templar off the map or about the easy back oracles spot above boss spawn.

Dont be like these cunts. Communicate. Avoid getting tilted. Dont mute your team, fucker. And for fuck sakes--- Dont fucking die as the encounter begins; Just dont.

Anateus Wards have been bugged to kill yourself for over a year now. Bungie, please either fix or change them.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:24 PM PST

Basically half the time you take (non-lethal) damage while sliding with the shield from Anateus Wards, you just instantly explode into a misadventure. Also, the "enhanced slide" from the perk only works half the time too (whenever the shield is on cooldown, so you can never have both in the same slide).

This has been the case since Forsaken launched and the Anateus Wards with it.

Some suspect its because of physics of the engine - your shield colliding with projectiles or whatever, but it really doesn't matter what causes it.

Bungie please either fix these bugs on Anateus Wards to make it usable and not literally kill yourself half the time you use its exotic perk, or completely change it if you can't fix the bug (maybe better slide and damage reduction while sliding or whatever).

    Optimized Bounties for 1/8/2020

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:23 AM PST

With this simple guide, you too can complete a decent chunk of bounties without forcing yourself to get 360 no-scope mid-air precision kills on Vex with Arc sniper rifles, and without grinding the same Lost Sector 15 times an hour.

Step 1 - Repeat after me: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me."

Step 2 - Pick up the following bounties:

    • Saint XIV - All Powerful - Kill 15 Challenging Cabal
    • Saint XIV - A Good Eye - 40 Precision Kills
    • Eva Levante - Hive Handler - Kill 100 Hive
    • Eva Levante - Fall in Line - Kill 100 Fallen
    • Eva Levante - Scorn Slayer - Kill 100 Scorn
    • Eva Levante - Big Finish - Kill 5 Enemies with Finishers
    • Zavala - Horsehoes and Hand Grenades - Kill 20 Enemies With Grenades
    • Zavala - The Harder They Fall - Defeat 10 Minibosses and Bosses in Any Strike
    • Zavala - Vanguardian - Defeat 50 Enemies in Any Strike
    • Shaxx - By the Code - Defeat 10 Opponents
    • Shaxx - Lightbearer - Defeat 3 Opponents With Any Ability
    • Shaxx - Into the Light - Defeat 1 Opponent Using Your Super

Step 3 - Make sure you have the following Weeklies in your inventory, as you will make progress on them while doing the above:

    • Zavala - End the Ritual - 3 Strikes, 1 Hive Boss
    • Shaxx - Combat Drill - 5 Wins, Fewer If You Do Well
    • Shaxx - Step Into the Light - 5 Wins, Fewer If you Do Well
    • Obelisk - Steal the Show - 300 Cabal Kills, 10 Cabal Finishers
    • Obelisk - No Time To Lose - 90 Multikills With Kinetic Weapons

Step 4 - Follow these steps:

    • Complete one Sun Dial (15-20 mins).
    • Complete one Hive, one Scorn, and one Fallen Strike (so Scarlet Keep, The Hollowed Lair, and Exodus Down) (15-20 mins each).
    • Complete one or two Crucible matches. (10 minutes each)
    • Take the 50-ish Essence you earned, grab 5 Eva Cookie Delivery Bounties, then deliver them (assuming all on separate planets and playing on shit load time consoles, 2-3 minutes each, 15 minutes total).

Total Non-Elemental Non-Weapon-Specific Bounties Completed: 17 (9 of which are Double XP from Eva)

Total Time: 1.5 - 2 hours, give or take (largely depends on load times and Cookie destinations)

Note 1: Drifter's bounties are butts today, so I ignored him.

Note 2: There are elemental/weapon specific bounties available from Saint XIV, Banshee, Zavala, and Drifter today. Only pick them up if you want to use them. If you hate them, don't do them. Misery is a bad choice. Don't make it.

Note 3: Obviously everyone has their own opinions on how good/bad/ugly bounties are, but for what it's worth, I'm putting this together to show how relatively painless the process can be. No forced weapons, no forced subclasses, and a variety of activities so you don't have to grind anything. Sun Dial, Strikes, and Crucible sounds like a fun night of Destiny to me - 17 bounties is just icing on that cake. Your mileage may vary.

EDIT: Tonight was my raid night, so I did not do all of this. Here's what I did do:

    • Garden of Salvation
    • Last Wish
    • Scarlet Keep Strike
    • Crucible (1 Match)

Completed all of the bounties I listed above but Scorn, Fallen, and Challenging Cabal. Also completed a few weapon/elemental bounties that I enjoy.

See? You can play the content you like, and still get bounties done! It's magic!

If you need a specific Pinnacle drop from the Ledgend Sundial and have the wrong Obelisk linked, Don't pick anything up and you can relink and run it again for the right drop...

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:59 PM PST

I got really lucky yestderday and got 7 different 970 drops from all the other Pinnacle activities. All I needed was a heavy from the ledgend sundail... So like a dumbass I jumped in and completed it without having the Mars Obelisk (linear fusion) linked. I pondered for a moment and decided to not pick anything up from the rewards, thinking there might be a snowballs chance in hell that I could relink Mars, run it again and pick up my 970 heavy..... and it actually worked.

    Hope this helps somebody.

The Devil's Ruin quest was SO MUCH FUN

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:50 AM PST

Although I love the videogame aspect of Destiny, what I enjoy the most is its lore and characters, so having a quest like this, where we just walk around while listening to dialogues, was so much fun.

I love Saint-14 and Osiris and I was eager to see them interacting after we saved Saint-14, and their interactions during this quest were everything I could ever wish for. I still hope we'll get to see them in a cutscene tho. And the dialogues between Saint-14 and Shaxx were priceless as well. I laughed so much I ended the quest in tears.

There are not many quests like this one and I hope we get more in the future. Sometimes when we have to fight during missions or quests I can't concentrate on the dialogues and I miss stuff, so this was really nice and the writing was so good and funny. I recorded the whole thing so I can listen to it again. Good job on this season, Bungie! Lorewise is being a blast.

Think dunemarchers. A melee which chains damage to enemies.

Okay but now require a kill to proc it.

Okay but now make that kill a finisher in PVE

Okay but now you expect all the ads to just stand around you as you do the finisher because the range is the same as if not shorter than Dunemarchers.

Okay now make it look sexy so you're sad about not equipping it

It feels that instead of catering to the hardcore audience, bungie is catering more to those who have incredibly large amounts of time to play.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 08:03 AM PST

Im loving destiny right now, but I feel the need to do more bounties than the stuff I actually enjoy like raids. I wish guided games were more popular because lfg sites are goddamn horrible.

In contrast, my friend who doesn't raid or do nightfalls or master nightmare hunts, dungeon or comp but just plays a shit ton and grinding for weapons and xp is having the time of his life.

I guess what im saying is that it's great that destiny is fun as a time sink and encouraging more shallow activities like the seasonal ones, but I kind of wish there was more incentive other that "pinnacle gear" because all the rolls are bad from raids and dungeons unless you do all three characters every week with the horrible lfg, where you can just grind XP and get +20 something from the artifact.

Fellow Titan bros, use your bubbles in the Sundial this week to save everyone from the lightening strikes!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:08 AM PST

The end Psion boss drops lightening strikes that can instant kill in heroic Sundial.

Even though you can anticipate the strikes by seeing a "blue shadow" on the floor before each strike, sometimes in the heat of the battle it's easy to lose your bearings.

Deploying bubbles helped a lot. This coupled with St.14 helm kept the local adds dazed + blinded and allowed our team to survive & DPS more consistently.

TLDR: Titan bubbles save you from end boss lightening strikes

    And the Drifter.

What was that? I listed the same thing over and over like a robot? SO DO THE NPCS! I don't even mean repeating voice lines, I mean they repeat voice LINE, single. It's so generic that if I turn off the sound i can only tell which subtitle belongs to who by its subject matter.

    I want THAT fixed.

Why don’t we get those mind blowing all statistic stuff from Bungie anymore? Like those emails about how many public events were completed.

Those emails were awesome and showed how much effort and love is poured into this game by such a large fan base. Please can we start to get those emails again, like at the end of every season

Recoil difference between platforms makes no sense

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:53 PM PST

I know it's a topic that has been addressed before, but I just can't wrap my head around how bad this design choice was. I always played on console, and tonight I had the chance to try the game on my friend's pc. I've always known and complained about this absurdely stupid difference (Recluse being one of the top examples, seeing gameplay on youtube where pc users lasered mobs from the other side of the room when using it on console feels like peeing after having sex always felt extremely unfair), but one thing baffled me the most when I actually got my hands on the pc version: me and my friend both own an Erentil FR4 with the same exact roll, but because of the total lack of recoil on pc the farthest one-shot kill distance is almost DOUBLED (from 40 to 70 metres) as all five bolts are fired perfectly tight and vertically thus consistently hitting the target, while on console the recoil makes it so after a certain distance some bolts will never land no matter how hard you try to control the recoil on the analog stick. How is this fair? Be it clear that this is just an example, what I'm advocating for is pc-like recoil for all weapons across the board, I know the Erentil is already hated as it is but I only used it as an example so please don't come at me with pitchforks and torches :)

Edit: as many have pointed out, the difference lies not on the platform but on the input device. I am aware of that, but since console players can't just plug a mouse and keyboard into their consoles but rather have to buy an adapter which will present various issues such as input lag anyway, I just boiled it down and talked about platforms for simplicity's sake.

Make less Grind Quests and more Search Quests and/or Secret Quests

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:35 PM PST

Not a lot to say. Getting 100+ kills with a select weapon or against certain enemies is not worth the title of "Exotic Quest Step", but what is worth it would be quests that require us to search for something with little to no clue as to where it is, and the Secret Missions (The Whisper, Zero Hour) due to the fact that they never hold your hand, and have plenty of neat secrets within.
