    Source: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/48723

Earlier today (Tuesday, February 11th), after the launch of Hotfix 2.7.1.1, we were made aware of the re-emergence of an issue which caused a small percentage of players to lose currency and materials. This comes after the first incidence of this issue, which caused all players to lose currency and materials on January 28th with the launch of Hotfix 2.7.1, and resulted in player account rollbacks. With today's incident, we have taken similar steps and rolled back accounts to the state they were in as of 8:30 AM PST (before the launch of 2.7.1.1).

Since both of these incidents are identical in cause and the effect on our players, and because both incidents happened within a close window of time, we wanted to give you a picture of what went wrong, how we fixed it, and how we're planning on making sure this doesn't happen again in the future. First, let's look at what caused this problem in the first place: a game bug involving inventory management and a series of server configurations that re-introduced the bug after it was fixed.

    Inventory Management

In Destiny 2, quests are treated similar to other inventory items, such as currency and materials. All items have a timestamp, based on when they were first added to a player's inventory. This timestamp is used to sort quests in the order in which they were acquired. The game cleans up a player's inventory upon each login, to make sure it is consistent with any changes to content, such as the maximum number of items of a particular type the player can carry.

Several months ago, players reported that quest log sorting wasn't working properly, and we wanted to fix that. The team investigated and found that the clean-up process was resetting the timestamp on a subset of quests, which was breaking chronological sorting. We decided to fix this by disabling the timestamp-resetting behavior for quests. That fix was conceptually reasonable but, through subtle side effects, it ended up disabling too much of the clean-up process. The net result was that the game calculated the wrong cap quantity for stacked items (such as currencies and materials), which caused items above the cap to be lost. We knew this code was critical and, per our typical process, we had two domain experts provide code reviews for the change – but sadly, we didn't spot the bug.

A few days later, our internal test teams caught this issue. However, we incorrectly concluded that it was caused by a tooling failure with debug workflows we use for testing, and not an actual bug within the game. Having dodged all our diligence, the issue went live in 4.7.1. Once the bug was identified in the live game, the next step was to figure out how to fix it, which leads us to the next discussion: game servers and their configurations.

    Server Configurations

Before every major release (for example, Shadowkeep), we do comprehensive stress testing to try and model user behavior and its impact on our service architecture. Because there's no substitute for millions of real player behaviors, we supplement this testing by closely monitoring service metrics after launch.

Back in October, in order to handle increased CPU and player load for Shadowkeep's launch, we spun up additional servers (in this case, called WorldServers); more servers, in fact, than we have ever used before for this task. Running with this many servers has had some small side effects that we were tracking but were generally invisible to players. For example, one issue was that a small percentage (less than 1 percent) of these servers would crash on start-up due to the volume of servers overwhelming one of the backing databases. Our workaround for this was to simply manually restart the crashed servers each time we detected this issue, and this appeared to address the problem without any discernable side effects for players.

Fast-forward to two weeks ago. The 2.7.1 update had the aforementioned bug that caused character data corruption and resulted in our first ever rollback of character data. To fix that issue quickly, we applied a patch to the servers instead of trying to get a full build of the game code deployed. This involved making a change to a server setting to override the game code used to process character data and then restarting the WorldServers to pick up that change.

Fast forward again to today, February 11th, when we rolled out the 2.7.1.1 update coinciding with the launch of Crimson Days. After launch, some of the WorldServers once again crashed on startup because of a high volume of servers starting simultaneously. Once again we manually restarted those servers and thought everything was fine. We were wrong.

Unbeknownst to us, this crash resulted in those WorldServers not applying the previous character data corruption fix. This meant that a small percentage of WorldServers were running the old code and the bug that was corrupting character data. We have verification systems that detect these sorts of version misconfigurations, but the WorldServer crashes and subsequent manual restarts caused the servers to also skip the verification process. Prior to this morning, we had believed skipping these overrides and verifications to be impossible.

As a part of our standard practices of verifying a new build, we also have our test teams log in with a number of test accounts in order to verify the player experience. Because we have hundreds of servers in our retail environment, every manual test we performed was (un)lucky enough to hit the "good" servers, and all of them missed the small percentage of servers that were in a bad state. So we gave the all clear.

Today, as the game came back on after the 2.7.1.1 deployment, we started seeing player reports of lost currency. The team began investigating immediately and took the game down at 10:30 AM PST. In that time, hundreds of thousands of unique players had logged into the game or accessed their characters through a third party service. Our investigation uncovered what we thought was an impossible situation: a small number of our WorldServers had loaded without the correct configuration which fixed the corruption issues from 2.7.1. Unfortunately, anyone whose characters had been accessed using one of these out-of-date servers encountered the character-corrupting problem.

Once we determined this was the same issue that occurred on January 28th and we understood how it happened, the team decided that our best path forward – rather than trying to identify each affected account and risk missing something in the process – was to restore all character data from the backup that took place just before the 2.7.1.1 patch rolled out.

    Preventive Measures

The team has identified a number of additional safeguards that should prevent this particular issue from happening in the future.

    1) We have added further safeguards to our process for "hot-patching" our servers to ensure that they cannot start with an unexpected version. This change is in place as we spin up the game today.

    2) We have fixed the issue that caused a small fraction of WorldServers to crash on startup. This fix will be deployed with Season 10.

    3) The permanent fix for character corruption will be rolled into the next update as an executable change, removing the need for the configuration override. (Unfortunately the 2.7.1.1 Hotfix was too far along to benefit from this).

    4) Looking ahead, we are investigating ways to speed up our rollback and recovery mechanisms.

    5) In a future release, we will address the issue that can cause servers to skip loading configuration data.

    6) We will also add more protections to the login-account clean-up code, to help prevent future bugs from being introduced into such a critical area.

    7) We are updating our development methodologies to catch issues like this earlier in the release pipeline.

With today's rollback, all character accounts will now be in the state they were at around 8:30 AM PST. The team is also hard at work in preparing Hotfix 2.7.1.2 with a planned release on February 13th. Also of note, this Hotfix will include a fix for the infinite Dawnblade issue.

We know today's outage and character rollback has been frustrating for you, especially with launch of Crimson Days, just as it's been frustrating for us to realize that this is a problem we should have been able to avoid. We're sorry for the frustration and inconvenience this caused and will continue to work to prevent these kinds of things from happening again. As always, if you have problems with your Destiny experience, you can reach us at our Bungie Help site and on Twitter @BungieHelp. Thank you for your patience!

Just had an unbelievable thing happen in Gambit

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:33 AM PST

Just an average Gambit match on Emerald Coast. There was one Cabal Legionary left alive down by the beach area. I had 14 motes, so this final enemy would get me my 15th! Large blocker here I come! But unfortunately, a blueberry (who only had 2 motes) was much closer to the Legionary when it died, so he would definitely get to the mote before me. I accepted my fate and turned around to go bank my 14 motes.

    But then it happened.

My controller vibrated like I was getting shot, but I didn't take damage.

I turned around, the blueberry was shooting me trying to get my attention.

He shot at me, and then at the single mote lying on the ground. It was blinking and about to disappear.

I quickly ran and picked up the mote, shot back at him to signal my thanks, and proceeded to bank my 15 motes to send a large blocker over to the enemy team! Thank you random player, whoever you are. That simple act of kindness and teamwork was one of the most wholesome and memorable things that has ever happened to me in this game.

Bungie I beg you, please please rework the new player experience.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:17 AM PST

I've had FIVE friends try out Destiny 2 since new light launched and it's just been an absolute disaster. Out of those 5 only 1 actually stuck with it enough to overcome the mess. And since I'm a veteran player I have no idea what the new light experience looks like so I can't guide them through it. But the experience is messy, doesn't teach you ANYTHING about the game and ultimately ends up overwhelming and intimidating players.

Every single person who has tried D2 through new light ends up just going to the EDZ, doing patrols, public events and adventures and says "is this all there is? I thought this game had a story?".

But joke's on them because the only story you can do is the red war which first of all doesn't reward you with anything, gives you no context for anything that's actually going on since there is no Destiny 1 story recap or anything.

On top of that there is the other issue, this game has a lot of icons that Bungie assumes people will understand, but nothing is really explained. One of my friends asked me how he was supposed to know the elements were solar, arc and void and truthfully I don't know how, it's just something you know or intuit from the rest of the mechanics, but the shield matching isn't explained anywhere and it's never explained that energy weapons do less damage than kinetics but are more effective vs shields.

Speaking of which, for some reason the concept of your gun slots has been one of the most difficult things to explain to people. What I assumed was a fairly straight forward system in that you have a kinetic, energy and heavy slot and in kinetic or energy you can either have primaries or special weapons actually doesn't resonate with people well. Every single person has referred to their kinetic slot as a primary and gets confused when I speak about kinetic specials. I don't think the system is the problem it's just that you never sit the player down and explain it to them. Which means that they will go off what other games teach them about load outs. 1st slot is primary, 2nd slot is your back up and 3rd slot is your big gun.

New players are the life blood of Destiny 2, and the game is insanely popular and new light is bringing fresh people who are willing to give it a shot. But it feels like you're inviting people to learn some basic statistics but then you instantly throw nonparametric regressions at them and laughing in their face when they ask you what that means.

TL;DR Destiny 2 feels ridiculously hostile to new players, people just starting out feel directionless and don't really know what to do. Most of the mechanics don't feel properly explained. The Red War campaign feels like the natural starting point for a new player but not only is it pointless to play for progression because it doesn't give rewards like it used to, the story almost requires you to have awareness of Destiny 1's characters to make sense.
I love this game so much, and I wanna see people be able to hop in and enjoy it without asking more than: What class do you think I'd like?

    Whisper of the Worm Painting

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:50 AM PST

Whisper of the Worm (Between Breaths) - 36x20" mixed media on canvas.

This is the sixth Destiny themed painting that I started, and it took a chunk of time to finish, mostly because I had to move out of an apartment due to an emergency and couch surf for a few months. I finished it up last spring.

Took some major inspiration from the lore entries surrounding the weapon and the original weapon model, the rare sniper that WotW is based on.

"Old kings. Sharp swords. Epic songs. Take the throne." (Aachen-LR2 description)

"It said, WIELD ME, AND USE ME TO TEST YOUR FOE." (Whisper of the Worm lore excerpt)

    Thanks for taking a look!

People keep asking "Is Destiny 2 ready for trials" but was D1 ever truly 'ready' for trials?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:49 AM PST

Title. D1 trials had its glaring flaws and D2 trials (of Osiris) will have its flaws, new and old, just as D1 did. It's gonna be a blast having it back for sure, but folks gotta stop holding it on this unrealistic pedestal trying to make sure everything is perfect. It's not gonna be perfect. There definitely will be annoying setups and annoying metas, but that is the nature of the beast. Now please, proceed to either downvote me to oblivion or gild me to royalty. /s

Edit: Thanks for the gold and silver kind strangers and let's keep the discussion going. Much love!

Probably the coolest thing about Forsaken was the surprise bait and switch. "Avenge Cayde-6 in a Space Western by hunting down his killers! OH WAIT, IN DOING SO YOU UNLOCKED SPACE RIVENDELL, ALSO THERE IS A GODDAMM WISH DRAGON AND ANOTHER HIVE RULER FUCKING YOU AND THE AWOKEN OVER!"

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 12:41 AM PST

Forsaken in terms of storywise was probably Destiny's best expansion ever. You go in to avenge Cadye by shooting Uldren, and along the way you slowly uncover this whole fucking mess involving The Last Ahamkara, the Cunning Witch Queen, and their plan to fuck over the last of the Awoken and their City. And then actualy entering said city and meeting the Techions who got took... all of it awesome.

Now's the time to get rid of the redundant currencies/consumables, Bungie.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 02:37 PM PST

    Weapon Telemetries, useless.

Concentrated Mattergems & Finest Matterweaves, upgrade mats with extra steps.

    Rainmakers, glimmer with extra steps.

Pure Matterglass Lenses, precision kills have a chance to drop Weapon Telemetries, lol.

Gifts of [Insert Token or Shader Here] are just tokens or shaders with extra steps.

I think most of us are fine with emergency maintenance if it means a better player experience overall, but the fact of the matter is that the last two emergency shutdowns were caused by an issue with currencies and consumables, and right now the system is completely bogged down with redundant or useless items. We'll all be happy to see them go because it will free up space in the game and streamline the player experience.

Crimson Days Missed Connections: Blinking Warlock

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 10:33 AM PST

You were a warlock, solo-queueing into Crimson Days (Today) right when the servers went down. I was your other warlock teammate, spawning in on Pacifica. You had a black bathrobe with beautiful flapping coattails. You didn't look back as you blinked up the stairs on the right, but I smiled anyways and I said "I'll follow you" under my breath. You won my undying admiration for bravely splitting off rushing ahead without me. That's it. Win or a loss?

edit: Oh dang gilded! Thank you! I just thought about putting something funny out there while all those "server is down" posts started rolling in. Glad everyone had a bit of fun! And no, I haven't found my Pacifica bathrobed warlock partner. Maybe one day!

I honestly think that losing VV was the worst part of bungie leaving AA deal

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:59 AM PST

VV made amazing port, probably the best DLC to date(season of opulence) and really good DLC warmind.

I would say that is the biggest lost to the entire franchise.

Imagine the good will if Bungie left an ascendant shard as a gift for every player when there are major downtimes like today

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:53 PM PST

Wouldn't be a huge deal but would let the players know that their inconvenience, large or small, was noted and appreciated by the staff.

I think its time to add emote wheel to game

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:44 AM PST

There are too many emotes in the game already and new ones getting add almost every week but we are forced to use only 4. I want to use emotes depending on the situation but if I dont have it equipped then I need to open inventory (which takes years to load) then equip it. I think emote wheel fix this problem. If adding emote wheel is impossible to game or takes hard work then at least let us use one of the 4 spots for favorited emotes, like finishers they play different emotes every time.

Armour 2.0 adds two new layers of RNG for us to deal with, stat rolls and element mods, making the grind for armour not only borderline endless, but somehow incredibly narrow and limited, with only a small selection of armour having stats at the highest level, rendering literally hundreds of armour pieces redundant.

This could be solved with an Armoursmith, a vendor that allows us to reroll stats on armour we have, infuse stat quantities from pinnacle armour onto lower stat armour, and change the rolled element.

    What does this accomplish?

For those who like to optimise their builds, if they have a 64 stat point armour piece with an even spread across attributes and they want to spec for discipline and recovery with a new meta, they could reroll, and if they change their mind later, could go back and reroll for a new build, rerolling that 64 into possibly strength and intellect. If they then need specific mods they can reroll the armours element so they have a strength, intellect sword and shotgun focused build.

For those who want to collect and look good, your other armours would no longer be useless. Say you love the nessus warlock chestpiece because its a coat and not a dress, but its stats are always below 55. You could infuse a piece of raid gear onto it, getting it to 60+, then reroll for what you need. It would make grinding for armour worthwhile since it could be optimised. Looking at the black armoury sets <3

It's obviously a core issue in that implementing this would be somewhat hard, and take time for a vendor model, backend programming, balancing and everything else, but it would also make all of the armour in the game useable for vanity and rerolling for utility, adding an extra avenue of pursuits for those wanting their guardians to look especially good or have a perfect roll.

    What do you guys think?

Maybe it's just my experience? Six matches, zero rounds won. What's the matchmaking for this, anyone know?

As a solo queuer I was put up against teams every match.

Each match had Unbroken Not Forgotten / god rolled Mindbender max mobility slidin'-ass aping Hunters.

    Not fun.

    /git gud I know

Twisted Towerthought: the absolute biggest missed oppotunity of Shadowkeep was no Cayde Nightmare haunting us somehow.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 09:23 PM PST

Eris is haunted by her dead fireteam, how the hell do we not have arguably our biggest failure to save someone on our shoulders?

Sure, the Pyramid kinda mentions that we and the Light failed Cayde in the last mission...

But let's be real, that's no replacement for a twisted Evil Cayde. Maybe he appears as a Evil Shadow Guardian. Maybe his voice just haunts us randomly on strikes and other missions saying some proper twisted but funny shit the REAL Cayde never would.

Point is, for a expansion billed to have psychological elements, Bungie really missed a trick there.

Tinfoil Helm of Saint 14 thought: After obtaining loads of weapons back to back, I no longer believe that each roll is entirely random from the last. Similar, or even identical rolls seem to come in clusters.

It's as if you pulled three sevens on a slot machine, and if you pull it again really fast, one or two of the sevens stay and the remaining wheel spins on to land on a new result.

    Maybe I'm nuts.
