This week at Bungie, Trials is back on the menu.

It's been an exciting week. You all came together and donated your stockpiles of Fractaline to the ongoing effort to build the new Lighthouse and usher in the return of Trials of Osiris next Season. As soon as the final stage was complete, you were invited to survey the completion of the project and light the beacon. We saw your signal as our cue to release this developer insight video confirming what many have been speculating for a while now.

    Video Link

To follow the video, Luke Smith wrote another Director's Cut that covered a few topics, including our philosophy on Seasons and some challenges in sustaining a game with weapons that last forever. Similar to the three-part epic he put out last year, it contains a lot of important info you won't want to miss.

    Subclass Changes

With the return of Trials and a new Season on the way, we're planning to shake things up with some changes to your Guardian abilities. The Dev team has the details, so I'll let them do the talking.

Dev Team: Hey, Guardians. Trials is coming back, and the Combat Systems team has been hard at work preparing Destiny 2 for its arrival. We've made a number of big changes to the abilities sandbox, and instead of simply dropping them all in the patch notes, we wanted to take this opportunity to offer some transparency for our decision-making process.

Before we begin, we want to give a big shout out to the data scientists here at Bungie. They provide us with mountains of valuable data to sift through—from the win rates of each subclass in each Crucible game mode to the kills-per-minute of each weapon on each platform in each PvE activity. This data allows us to make sure we're making informed decisions when balancing the game. It allows us to separate the perceived power of abilities, weapons, and armor, from their true, objective power. But The data doesn't always tell the whole story, and we believe strongly that perceived power and community sentiment are just as important as cold, hard data. Even as Trials returns, we're committed to maintaining a fun and fair sandbox for both PvP and PvE, and we considered data for all game modes when making adjustments.

    Warlock Melee

Warlocks have long been at a disadvantage in melee fights because it takes them slightly longer than Titans and Hunters to recover from making a melee attack. So, next Season, we're extending the Warlock's basic melee range by one meter to a total of 5.5 meters. Warlocks will still melee slightly slower than the other classes, but they'll now have a one-meter advantage. If you can use this window to land the first melee attack in a slap fight, you'll likely emerge victorious. We feel this is a more interesting solution to melee disparity than homogenizing all of the melee attacks, and we'll be studying the data as it rolls in to make sure it's balanced.

    Titan Barricades

A Titan's barricade is incredibly powerful in Trials because you can use it to safely resurrect your fallen teammates. Next Season, we're creating counters to the barricade while also raising its health from 500hp to 600hp. Barricades will now take extra damage from Special-ammo weapons, anti-barrier weapons, and certain Heavy weapons. This change makes barricades sturdier while giving opposing players the option to use their Special ammo to bring down the barricade more quickly.

The following weapons now do 30% extra damage to Barricades:

    • Sniper Rifles
    • Grenade Launchers
    • Linear Fusion Rifles
    • Machine Guns
    • Trace Rifles
    • Anti-Barrier Weapons

The following weapons now do 60% extra damage to Barricades:

    • Shotguns
    • Fusion Rifles

You'll see yellow damage numbers when hitting a barricade with a counter weapon, which always feels good.

    One-Shot Abilities

With the introduction of the Hunter's Weighted Knife in Season of Dawn, each class now has a neutral-game ability that can kill PvP opponents in one hit. We've taken a pass at all of the one-shot abilities to tune their risk/reward factor. We'll warn you that some these changes look extreme on paper, but we made a point to make sure these abilities retained their overall feel.

For the Titan's three Shoulder Charge abilities, we reduced the auto-targeting angle by 50%. That might sound like a lot, but acrobatic Titans could previously auto-target to make an instant 90-degree turn. We also adjusted the lunge distance to 5.5m for both targeted and untargeted lunges. Targeted lunges were previously 6m, while untargeted lunges were previously 4.5m. These changes make for a more consistent experience while lunging.

For the Hunter's Weighted Knife, we've reduced its tracking significantly and created new tracking tech that will make the knife more faithful to its initial throw trajectory.

As for the Warlock's Handheld Supernova, we've made a number of changes to bring this ability in line with the other one-shot abilities. While part of HHSN's strength lies in its pairing with the Contraverse Hold Exotic gauntlets (which are also being tuned this Season), our data indicated that even without Contraverse Hold, Handheld Supernova needed to be adjusted. Here are the changes:

    • Increased activation time by 0.6 seconds
    • Reduced hold time from 3.5 seconds to 2.5 seconds
    • Reduced range by 20%
    • Tightened horizontal spread of bolts by 25%
    • Bolt explosion now does self-damage
    • Reduced bolt explosion radius from 3m to 2.5m

In our playtesting, we've found that the product of these changes is an ability that is still incredibly strong but now has a risk/reward ratio commensurate with its power. (After all, this thing can vaporize multiple PvP opponents instantly.) There's even a bit of silver lining here —the tightening of the bolts leads to more concentrated damage at range, improving its viability against Supers. To compensate for this change, other elements of the middle Voidwalker path are being buffed, including the Nova Warp Super, which now has increased damage resistance, a longer duration, and a reduced blink cost.

    General Subclass Tuning

We've made changes to a number of subclass paths in an effort to tighten the gameplay balance. For example, Stormcaller top, Striker bottom, and Arcstrider bottom have remained dominant in PvP for multiple Seasons now, consistently beating out all other paths in both win-rate and average efficiency. These paths have also ranked among the top PvE paths in terms of kills-per-minute. We've adjusted these paths (and others) to bring them closer to the middle of the pack. On the other end of the spectrum, paths such as Voidwalker bottom, Nightstalker bottom, and Striker middle needed some love, so we've taken steps to lift them up.

In the spirit of transparency, we take no joy in nerfing the abilities, weapons, and armor that we all love to use. We wish the answer to keeping the game balanced and fresh was always to buff the underperforming elements. But such an approach leads to power creep—the slow and steady increase of the average power of everything in the game—which trivializes the incredible game modes and encounters that the other teams at Bungie work hard to create. After all, as Destiny players ourselves, we go home and play the game too, and we want the game to be as fun and as healthy as possible.

That's it from us today. You'll find more details about these changes and more when the patch notes drop in early March.

Oh yeah . . . and Hunter Tripmines are sticky again. Stay sharp, Guardians.

As promised, in addition to these explanations, there will be patch notes when the new Season begins. Those should give you the full illustration of how the game is changing. Until they arrive, we hope you enjoyed this preview.

    END OF THE SEASON

With the Empyrean Foundation restored, the last Triumph to acquire the Savior Seal has been unlocked. Players completing this Seal should claim and equip it to ensure it isn't removed when Season of Dawn ends on March 10.

Additionally, players have until 9:59 AM PST on March 13 to claim their Season of Dawn rewards on their Bungie Rewards page, with a deadline to purchase being 11:59 PM PST on March 31.

Finally, the Player Support team is working on an End of Season article highlighting quests, items, and Triumphs leaving with the transition to Season of the Worthy.

    STONK MARKET CLOSING SOON

The community has been questioning if they can continue donating to the Empyrean Foundation. Players will be able to donate their Polarized Fractaline until the Season ends on March 10.

    UPCOMING RESOLVED ISSUES

Below is a list of issues that will be resolved when Season of the Worthy and Update 2.8.0 becomes available on March 10:

    • Tower travel loading times will be returned to normal.
    • The Prime Attunement buff will once again show up on new characters after previous character deletion.
    • The Pigeon and the Phoenix lore will become available again to those who earned the lore. Players who acquire Bastion in later Seasons will be granted all Pigeon and Pheonix lore.
    • The empty Solstice of Heroes gift message from Tess will no longer show up.

All of this Trials of Osiris talk may have some of you wondering if there's going to be PVE content coming next Season. Luke mentioned we have more info coming and shared a cool picture of next seasons artifact, which you can now download in 4K here. There will be plenty to do for players who prefer to take on the minions of the darkness.

Next week, we'll share more on what to expect in Season of the Worthy. Only one more TWAB left to go before the new Season!

Artifact will be disabled in Trials

Complaints will abound regardless. But I'm very eager to see what tonight has in store for us.

    Edit: WHERE IS IT?!?!

Edit 2 Electric Boogalo: TWAB was good and Artifact has been disabled for Trials. Reddit is now a bearable hellscape

Trials needs to be saved before release, not after.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:16 AM PST

I usually lurk. I'm not the type to post, but this time I feel the need to.

Let's start this off with a little fun thought experiment so picture this: The world championship in chess decides that "Hey, fuck it, let's add a new rule to the game. We'll make it so that you are allowed to stand up, whenever you want, and knock the fuck out of your opponent. And if he becomes unconscious, you win!"

While this is kind of an exaggeration, this is what Trials will be with the Artifact power enabled. If these rules were in chess, then it would not be about who is the best chess player, it would be about who goes to the gym more often, who practises their punches the best. IT IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE GAME THEIR PLAYING. Same with Trials. It's not about who has the tightest flicks, who knows how to counter a team with certain loadouts, who knows where the best spots to peek is. It's gonna be about who has done the most bounties in PvE. This is outrageous.

The fact that Bungie probably had a meeting where they discussed whether to have the artifact power impact Trials or not and decided to do it is insane to me. I would give anything to know what the fuck went through their heads at that moment. Because to me, and 99.99% of the community it seems like this is one of the ideas where you go "Hey we have the artifact power, should we ena... Never mind" and that should be the end of it. It just seems plain stupid to even concider it for more than 10 minutes.

Now, even more insulting is the fact that we get to hear that you will monitor our feedback when the season realises. Just no. You have your feedback already. In many cases sure, wait and see how people react. The proposed changes to shelving weapons is a perfect example. The community is split. I, myself, don't know if I think it's a good idea or bad. Send it when it's ready, see how people react, adjust accordingly. But for Trials, this is not the case. We don't need to test this to know how fucking stupid it is, because it is too obvious that it does not make sense. Aim, positioning and practise should be the deciding factors to whether you win or not. NOT YOUR ABILITY TO FARM BOUNTIES.

I think that this should be priority number one for some of the team for the next couple of weeks. Get the artifact out of Trials. If not, it would be like the filmmakers behind Sonic saw the feedback after the first trailer and went: "We're gonna release this film and see what you think, and if you don't like it THEN we'll change it and give you an updated version." But you know what they did? They pulled the entire film, apologized for the design, said they would push the release date a bit and fix it. And they did! It worked. They should be your role models in this situation.

I love Destiny and I love PvP. Please just fix this shit before release because I know that you know that this doesn't fucking work. No need to test, it is just plain obvious.

    removetheartifact

Edit: Thanks for all the awards and replies! I just wanted to get ahead of this just in case Bungie replies to this. If you are still planning on shipping Trials with the artifact power enabled, can you just do us the courtesy of telling us why. Everytime you guys explain how or why something is done you always get praise from a large part of the community for your transparancy, so please give us the same treatment in this case. That would be lovely <3 I think I speak for all of us when I say that we want what's best for the game and I know you probably too.

Edit2: WE DID IT BOYS, ARTIFACT IS NO MORE!

Bungie's "play the way you want but actually it's play the way we want you to play" philosophy since Shadowkeep's release has been one of their biggest misfires that has ultimately killed any enjoyment of the game.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:56 AM PST

Very sad to see the state the game is in right now with all the upcoming nerfs, artifact enabled Trials and the new Director's Cut being more empty, meaningless promises for a game with so much potential, among all the other issues that have plagued the game since Shadowkeep launched, all my excitement for Season of the Worthy is about as lively as Cayde. Sure, I'll still play the game at least casually, because the gameplay is good enough that I don't totally feel like I'm suffering while playing, but I could just move on to other, better games that actually are rewarding me for my time playing them (shoutout to Monster Hunter World).

Edit: I'm fully ready to eat my words if this next season turns out to be something and then the love/hate cycle shall repeat once more, but for now, expectations have been set.

If legendary weapons are essentially going to have a shelf life, then they should have less RNG

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 06:40 AM PST

The amount of time it takes to get a god rolled weapon is way too long if that weapon won't be usable forever.

I'm not proposing that we go back to static rolls. Instead, what if weapons simply dropped with more perk options in each column (similar to how the season pass for this season allowed timelost weapons to get an alternative final perk). I would be far more accepting of legendaries having a power limit if it meant spending less time pursuing god rolls. Maybe it'll take a handful of attempts to get a gun with all the perks I want, that would be fine.

That's certainly not the only thing that could be done, and it wouldn't fix everything, but it is at least a very simple option. At the end of the day, I want to play the game using weapons that I like, not play the game to get weapons that I like.

I feel like Luke Smith's tweet just made Destiny history

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST

This is the first time I've seen real, widely agreed-upon player feedback be changed to exactly what those people wanted within 2 days. If it wasn't the first its definitely one of the biggest changes to an important game mode so quickly. Now I'm really starting to feel Bungie really is serious about trials.

After the recent hate storm about the artifact, I feel like nows a good time to appreciate the community managers and the devs for making a real change so fast based on what players wanted.

Pro tip: Bastion will completely dominate Titan barricades in PvP now.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:58 PM PST

In case you hate Titans as much as Bungie does, equip a Bastion for Trials. It was already capable of completely shitting on barricades in one trigger pull and sometimes killing the Titan behind it, but now? It's gonna be like Swiss cheese.

Barricade health increasing from 500 to 600

    20% increase

Fusion Rifles do 60% more damage to barricades.

Bastion does 7 bolts of 30 damage x 3 punches of bolts per trigger pull. Now it's getting a 60% buff to barricades.

    ([7x30]x3)x1.6 = 1,008 Damage to a barricade.

    ^ math.

You're gonna dunk on the Barricade, the guy behind the Barricade, the Hunter he tried to Rez out in no man's land pole dancing and whatever character the Titan picks in D3 when he spawns in. You're welcome. If fusion rifles, for whatever reason, are anti-barrier next season... nuke.jpg

We wanna give a big shoutout to the data scientists at Bungie who give us mountains of valuable data.

    -a titan main

    -edit-

And just found out the Revoker refunds shots against barricades. Lol

    -edit 2 -

Gotta add something to help out my Titan brothers: Heart of Inmost Light buffs barricade health. Assumedly Bungie didn't fuck that up and it'll stack with the innate barricade health buff. If you like barricades, wear the HoiL. 600 health barricade x HoiL's 40% barricade health boost = 840 health. Still shit on by Bastion but you'll survive behind it.

Factions still have a place.... even if rallies don't.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:57 AM PST

The concept that factions are leaving because of the lack of player involvement is a self fulfilling prophecy given their long absence. The communities interest in factions is still very high. I've read countless posts on bringing factions back, mostly to d1 levels of involvement. I haven't seen anyone clamoring to go back to grinding lost sectors for tokens but there is still a desire to have factions as part of the game.

As a new player to d2 at launch, the rallies have me insight into this world. It offered context that wasn't always apparent. Leaving then behind completely would be incredibly disappointing. I had all the armour, weapons and shaders. I got into it. Not necessarily because of the grind but the increased relationship it offered with the world of destiny.

I don't want the rallies back. I do want a system where pledging to a faction means something, an ingame universal clan system. Have the factions run in there background. Have a loot pool of faction armor and a few interesting and useful guns. Have the rewards pay off over long periods of time. This way when you see someone decked head to toe in fwc gear you know they are committed. You know they are tethered to that faction and the destiny universe overall. Just think factions matter more to some people than they are being given credit for.

(Edit 1) This really blew up while at work. Thank you all for bringing something to the discussion. Part of what makes this community great is the ability to weigh in and have a voice. Hopefully someone from Bungie sees this. I do believe they take in the feedback of the community. Whether that feedback is in line with their vision for the game is for another post. Eyes up guardians!

(Edit 2) First gold. Thanks fellow guardian! Much appreciated.

With the return of TRIALS, can we at least spell it right?

I can't even count the amount of times in D1 I've seen "Looking for 2 trails", "Trails carry", etc.

As a community member, I often find myself feeling conflicted with the general community consensus.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:47 AM PST

So, theres actually quite a lot to talk about right now in Destiny. Trials is coming back, a slew of nerfs and an upcoming season. Am I excited? Yes and no. I'm excited for me, but I often find it difficult to find like minded guardians that agree with that sentiment.

I mean, it's no secret that this subreddit leans towards the negative more heavily. I'm fine with that, it's important for us to critique and scrutinise the game, if only with the hopes of making it better.

So, let's shift back to yesterday. I am really happy with the directors cut 2020. I felt it openly and transparently discussed the issues the game faces in a way that gets me excited about the future. I came to Reddit with hopes that some interesting discussion might be happening, but sadly no. At least for me, it felt like more of the same, doom and gloom Destiny is dead to me posts that are all too common nowadays. Everyone is freaking out about Trials artifact levels and legendary power caps. We haven't even experienced these changes yet but everyone has made up their mind that it's going to be terrible.

I guess what I'm looking for is; are there other like myself that don't feel this way? Do people find themselves feeling disappointed by the typical community communication or am I the odd one out?

Having it so easy to farm Sundial and Managerie weapons makes me sad I can’t do the same with Black Armory weapons

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:06 PM PST

Personally the Black Armory weapons are one of my favourite weapon looks in D2. The fact it's so difficult to get the main weapons, let alone the random drops, is sad. Just recently got the ship from making 100 weapons and in all of those I managed to get 2 rocket launchers, 2 smgs, 1 sidearm and about 3-4 of the auto rifle and pulse rifle that are random drops.

Can we please get a way to farm all of the Black Armory weapons? Even just making the random drops craftable would be a massive step!

At this point Bungie should just completely rework the entire concept of the artifact.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:09 AM PST

This sub has been flooded with trials posts, so even tho I strongly agree, I'm not gonna mention it. I'm talking about a different kind of issue: we shouldn't become more powerful by doing bounties. We want to get high light by killing raid bosses and completing nightfalls. Not by farming fucking moon bounties. No one asked for this change. I get that Shadowkeep was something new, but if it ain't broke don't fix it! Ever since D1 the way you level up was to reach max level (30,40 etc) and then get better gear from end game activities. I didn't see a single complaint about why this needs to change. I can guarantee you most of us don't want to "level up" by getting XP. We want to reach max light by slaying the most difficult bosses. Remember "forever 29"? As much as we all hated it back then, how great was it to finally get that final piece that made you level 30?

My point is remove the entire concept of the artifact and let us reach max light from raids not bounties and lost sectors. If you wanna keep the artifact make it like it was back in Rise of Iron- with unique abilities. It was cool and fun to mess with.

Difficulty of Content and Experience Gained is Extremely Disproportionate

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:57 AM PST

I'd be a bit more content with the artifact power level being enabled with trials if more endgame content gave more exp. If you have a high power level, it's not because you've done a lot of comp, raids, or dungeons. It's because you sat in a lost sector and did Eris bounties.

At this point, I'd prefer D3 over D2Y4

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:10 AM PST

The Director's Cut talks about Year 4 for D2.

I know there was a lot of backlash when D2 came out that we were losing all of our gear. There was a lot of backlash that we were losing our content. But ultimately that gear is still there and that content is still there - in Destiny 1, with servers still running, that we can go back to whenever we want.

The ever-evolving D2 has resulted in content being made then discarded. The changes in talked about in the director's cut to weapons mean those will become useless in high end content.

If we must at some point lose content to game bloat - and that's a completely fair argument - and we must at some point lose our guns to make way for something new - mostly fair - I'd rather they be left behind in a way that's still accessible, that I can still go back to and enjoy.

But also, and perhaps more selfishly, I just liked D1 better. I've been looking forward to getting out of D2 so that they could fix some of its biggest mistakes - character skill trees not existing, half of the planets being boring, and the most important vendors from a character's viewpoint (vanguard, factions) not having any worth. Unlike D1 where I didn't want to lose a lot of what I had, part of me will be glad to see the back of D2.

Save Trials - test artifact advantage in Labs instead of Trials

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:23 PM PST

Edit 2: It's done! Artifact level is disabled in Trials. With that said, this post is still relevant - I would happily play-test artifact level advantage in Labs.

Bungie - even if you have some interesting ideas that might be awesome sauce regarding the artifact in Trials... You already have overwhelming feedback that this might be a bad idea. Why not start with vanilla trials (no artifact) and get a huge positive win for next season? After that, evaluate whether you still want to try adding artifact power.

Or... I don't know... Why not add in artifact power in Labs or Elimination Testing playlist? You had an opportunity to trial the artifact power in a 3v3 playlist and you didn't put it in - why introduce this into live Trials and possibly ruin the playlist forever (or at least seriously Jade it)

And before you say "we trialed it in Iron Banner" - 3v3 elimination and 6v6 clash are two very different beasts. Sure, I didn't notice a huge impact from 990+ people in iron banner, but I also had five other people shooting and I didn't care so much if I died. In elimination, this isn't the case.

Please... If you have a burning itch to enable artifact in trials because you have some cool idea... Please please please try it in Elimination or Labs playlists first, and release Trials without the artifact. If you feel you have something to prove, do it in Labs where you have a playlist that was made with this kind of testing in mind.

    Please

Edit: I'm trying to give some constructive alternatives other than "artifact will suck". They gave us three versions of Elimination to try out in Labs - do the same thing with Artifact Advantage. At least let us play test something that big.

And before "Iron Banner play tested!" 3v3 is completely different from 6v6. And elimination is completely different from Control. Multiply those two together, and Trials is like... 4x completely different

Heart of Inmost Light should be able to refresh its buff BEFORE the timer runs out

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:59 PM PST

Just a minor gripe, but as it stands, Heart of Inmost Light (the titan chestpiece) essentially gives you a buff called "Empowered" whenever you use any ability. This is the buff that increases the potency of abilities and also increases the regeneration rate of said abilities, which is why it lets sticky nades one shot, for example.

The main problem with it right now is that it can't refresh its buff until the timer on your current buff runs out. If you could refresh the timer while the buff was still active, you could do stuff like have a high discipline/resil build, pop a shield, throw a nade to refresh the buff, and by the time that buff is almost out, you'll have had your shield back up to pop to refresh the buff, so if you played your cards right you could have a lot of ability uptime. As of now, you can't do that and it really hurts the exotic into "meh" territory

One huge benefit of weapon retirement that actually benefits the player hasn’t been mentioned.

All the Silver and Brightdust we'll save on weapon ornaments. 🤷‍♂️

Also- kidding aside, even though Luke Smith said exotics are "currently off the table" for retirement it doesn't mean they won't change that in the future. Think about that when you're deciding to buy an exotic weapon ornament that costs as much as a seasons pass..
