Why We Gravitate To Damage and Reload Perks (And How To Stop It)

    Posted: 26 May 2020 11:12 AM PDT

So, I went back to Destiny 1 and ran around with a couple of weapons that all had one thing in common: They didn't have Crowd Control (Rampage) or Reactive Reload (Kill Clip). And you know what; I didn't miss them. Instead, I used more utility based perks, like Firefly (Dragonfly), Triple Tap, and Spray & Play (Alloy Mag, kinda) and so on.

There's been a lot of talk about nerfing the damage-reload combo and how weapons will behave moving forward, so I feel like I should pipe my 2 cents in. We've already sat through major changes to the damage perks, and now with the reload perks, which was a bit uncalled for.

So, why do we gravitate toward this holy combo? It's quite simple, actually.

Primary Weapon Damage is too low

It goes without saying that the reason why we like perks that boost our damage is because it feels like we aren't doing enough damage already.

Destiny 1 had this certain level of perk diversity because most of the best perks in the game didn't directly affect your damage. While Outlaw and Feeding Frenzy were still top-tier, they weren't meta-defining like they are today.

Ace of Spades in D2 can't one shot some red bars at certain levels without Memento Mori active, when an equivalent hand cannon, the Eyasluna in D1, would have handled those enemies no problem. This issue is also shared with Bows, Scouts, and Pulses, where they can't one shot/burst certain trash mobs.

A lot of the damage in the game is also heavily weighted on headshots. D2 punished you like nothing if you land bodyshots. And sure, while that is understandable on something like a sniper or scout rifle, but on weapons that can't easily hit headshots, like an auto, it's awful. Maybe it has to do with the differences between console and PC, but I call bullshit. I doubt that people would actively choose to shoot for less damage if the bodyshot floor was brought up. PvP, I get it; you want to reward accurate shooting, but why is that same philosophy held in PvE? That was partly why Recluse was so good for so long: Master of Arms was weighted to bring the bodyshot damage up by something ridiculous (like 150%) to bring it in line with the precision damage.

If most guns had their precision/body split brought closer in, say Forsaken, Recluse wouldn't seem as broken as it was and perks like Rampage would be seen as creature comforts rather than necessary.

Certain Perks Aren't What They Used To Be

I look at Firefly as the poster child for this. Before D2, it was the premium CC perk. The explosion was big and dealt a lot of damage, and came on some of the best PvE weapons in Fatebringer and Hung Jury. Both of those didn't have damage perks and only Fatebringer had Outlaw.

As we moved into D2, kinetic weapons lost the option to roll a Firefly-like perk. We didn't have a kinetic weapon with Firefly until Ace of Spades (I'm not counting that Warlock chestpiece), and haven't seen one since. Energy weapons got Dragonfly: a stripped back, laughable imitation of what Firefly used to be. The damage is poor, the range is bad, and the Dragonfly Spec mod barely addresses the issue.

Once again; since Dragonfly lost a lot of its usefulness, if Rampage is in the same slot, why wouldn't I pick it?

    Some Perks Are Gone Entirely

What happened to Life Support? Or Hot Swap? Or Return To Sender? Or Third Eye? What about Battle Runner and Army of One? I miss Focused Fire, Spray & Play and Final Round personally.

A good chunk of the utility perks, and even some damage and reload, just flat out don't exist in D2 legendary pools. When most weapons can only roll the same 5-6 perks, of course we'd naturally gravitate toward some of the better perks. Which leads me to my next point:

Other Perks Are Plainly Bad Or Not The Best Choice

Whoopie, Air Assault. Because I want a barely noticeable handling boost for the split second I'm in the air, eating an accuracy debuff in the process. No wonder it's only on a few weapons from Black Armory and Austringer.

Under Pressure and High Impact Reserves are good on fusions. Other than that, can you name a weapon that will benefit from having either over Zen Moment or any damage perk?

With those in the same column as Rampage, Multikill Clip, Feeding Frenzy, and others; why would you choose those?

Same applies to the more useful perks. Why take Ambitious Assassin or Triple Tap over some of the other perks mentioned above? While better than Air Assault, they aren't as usable as Rampage or Outlaw.

Having perks that are naturally better than others is fine, it's a bad thing when the only choices are also the best.

Most Guns Are Laid Out The Same

    In general, it's:

    1. 2 Barrels/Scopes
    2. 2 Magazine
    3. Perk 1
    4. Perk 2

It wasn't like that in D1. While it was 3 scopes, perk 1, 3 mag perks, and perk 2; the pools were huge. The reprised Shadow Price, for example, had 11 different perks you could roll in both slots, and of those, at least 6 would have been usable (in each slot), and even fewer of those were damage and reload perks.

What happened to the foundry-specific perk layouts? Better yet: what happened to the foundry weapons? We had a ton in D2, year 1, and barely a quarter of them can now roll with random perks.

Take a look at this video. Hakke and SUROS weapons each had their own quirks, and as such, you could build around a certain weapon's strengths. By no means am I advocating that we go back to the one-perk per gun system for SUROS weapons specifically, but there's a bit of creativity to be had. Like, maybe Veist weapons can have 2 trees of magazine perks and a tree for a weapon perk.

i also miss the hakke 4-shot burst pulse rifles

So how do we make the guns better?

    Glad you asked.

    1. Game-wide, sweeping primary buffs: Bodyshot damage should go up, and certain weapons should have a higher crit multiplier. Some guns should also have stability looked at. 750 SMGs are terrible weapons to use because of how bad they kick, and certain hand cannons just kick a little too hard, even after their firing animation change.
    2. Introduce new (or returning) weapons that have a different perk tree layout. Augmented weapons from the forges and Season 9 weapons with the Season Pass buff are a good start. Weapons from certain foundries should have different layouts from each other, no matter the source. The FWC fusion and Erentil would have the same layout, for insance.
    3. Buff under-performing perks to bring them in line with the top dogs.
      1. High-Impact Reserves, for example, should have (at least) a 50% damage buff at the very tailend of the magazine. This can be tuned differently for PvP
      2. Slideshot and Slideways honestly should just be merged
      3. Under Pressure should have another bonus, on top of stability, like maybe range or accuracy
      4. Dragonfly should be significantly larger, deal more damage, and roll on kinetic weapons again
      5. Air Assault should negate the in-air accuracy penalty and have another buff. Handling just isn't important when you're already in the air
    4. Restructure weapon perk pools so they hold 8-12 per slot. While some guns from certain sources (raids, Trials) should have smaller pools to increase the shot of a great roll, vendor and random drops should have wider selections.
    5. Reintroduce D1 utility perks to diversify perk pools. I'd love to see Focused Fire back on Autos and Army of One on all weapons.
    6. Bring back certain barrels and scopes to diversify perk pools. Red Dot OAS was one of the best scopes in the game and it's only on blues now, and Aggressive Ballistics would get rid of (or at least reduce) the need for a damage perk

While I don't expect all of these to be in the game, I would at least like to see some added in. But who knows what Bungo is planning.

EDIT: Thanks for the gold, anonymous redditor!!

SAW SOMETHING WEIRD in the Moon Seraph Bunker

    Posted: 26 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT

There's a tiny loophole in the Moon Seraph Bunker: You must fall through the floor in a certain place to access the hidden area.
I have explored that location thoroughly and found new data about the Pyramids!

Today, I share my secrets with you. Here's a link to the exploration video I made: link

Some of you might have guessed that I have, in fact, built up the location in order to create this video for y'all.
I used some of Destiny 2 assets and things like Mixamo & Unreal Engine 4.
Hope you will enjoy this video, good luck and have fun during the last weeks of the season!"

Can we have more character interactions like the Symphony of Death quest? Spoilers if you have not completed it.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 08:52 PM PDT

As part of the Symphony of Death quest, you are tasked with returning to Eris Mourn, but when you go to fast travel to the sanctuary, you realize her waypoint is no longer there. Upon further investigation, you find a portal next to her usual station on Luna, and passing through it reveals zeros on her knees pleading with her Nightmares in front of the Pyramid. You approach her with the necklace of one of her fallen fireteam members, which encourages a heartfelt story of Eris' life before she lost her Ghost... and her friends.

The best part of this is none of it is a cutscene. The atmosphere is such that you are reluctant to approach Eris when you find her, fearing you are going to interrupt something. This level of involvement and interaction is incredible, and I hope to see more of it in future content.

"Let's just ignore Rise of Iron happened" - Bungie

    Posted: 26 May 2020 06:36 AM PDT

I see a lot of people around and especially in the YT area lots of videos on this new Felwinter stuff. "Oh man this was such a great addition to his lore and it really helped Rasputins character..." etc etc etc.

Is it just me or did this entire 'revelation' just stink of bullshit? Ok I admit the Felwinter backstory was mildly interesting and if it had been followed up by a cohesive and immersive response from the characters around us I may have accepted it.

Firstly, Zavala. He never really trusted Rasputin and now the AI has just *admitted* to murdering hundreds of pre-guardian guardians in cold blood over some jealousy. And he expects everyone to just be cool with it if he says "nah it's fine cause I was really sad about it after!".

Next, **SALADIN**. I mean where to even start. This dude assumed for all these years that Rasputin... I don't know made some kind of mistake (?) or tried to defend itself against invaders? Now he gets the knowledge that not only was he tricked into going to Site 6 but Rasputin, in cold blood, murdered each and every one of his friends and possible love interest. WHAT. THE. FUCK. This man has the right to be soooooo pissed rn.

So where is the post-mission scene with Zavala, Ana and Saladin? Where is the outrage that Saladin is very entitled to feel? He just found out why HUNDREDS of Iron Lords died for no reason whatsoever and we get nothing from him? Where is Zavala's renewed doubts about a mad AI we've just spent all season giving more weapons? This is **BASIC STORY TELLING** and it highlights the biggest failings of the seasonal style of story content. Nothing is ever planned, nothing is done to completion. It's always just a scratch at the surface to make it feel fresh then move on.

Maybe this is just a culmination of yet again Bungie's failings in story writing and a cohesive world but I'm so sick it.

Edit: To clarify I don't care about Rasputin's motivation, I don't care about whether it was to him justified etc. I care that this, in any other game, would be a massive moment. We have just been told a huge revelation on a main "character" and the best bungie can do with its characters is... Nothing. Not a "we shouldn't tell anyone about this" from Anna, nothing about "zavala can't hear about this" from ghost, nothing at all. The mission just ends. That's what I'm annoyed about. None of our actions have any influence on this "living world". Characters don't engage with each other and significant events in lore are ignored.

A giant, artificial object is about to crash into the planet while the game is in a terrible state. If there's an Ahamkara inside, we've officially gone full Final Fantasy 14.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 02:48 PM PDT

For context, if you've never played FF14: years ago, the game was broken and buggy and everyone hated it, so the dev's made a moon crash into the planet. This "moon" turned out to be an artificial one, using an imprisoned dragon god as a giant solar panel. Needless to say, he wasn't happy. This triggered a full relaunch of the game, which is currently the highest-rated MMO in the world.

Now I'm not saying Bungie is going to do anything quite so drastic, but... I can dream, can't I?

    I miss pre-New Light.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 04:30 PM PDT

New Light was a great idea to get more people involved into Destiny, but it saddens me to see they will never experience that we all started with. Starting the game with the opening mission and slowly grinding my way up to level 20+ was probably my favorite aspect about Destiny. Going to the farm, picking up green engrams from the ground, I just miss it all. New Light just throwing new people into the game makes me feel like it ruins it. Unfortunately, we can never experience that again. Don't get me started on legacy campaigns, as it is completely useless (non-story wise) and is completely unrewarding. Bungie, make me feel young again.

I figured out how to jump last night. I'm in a clan of dad gamers and we don't get to play that often, but last night I was running a survey patrol with my friend and we had to go to a part of the map that was really high up. Usually I just try to run up on the rocks until I get where I need to go, but that wasn't working so I threw my controller at The Wife in frustration and it must have mashed the right button because my Guardian jumped! I've already ordered a few more controllers so I can practice more but I'm excited to finally be able to do jumping puzzles like in whisper of the worm.

Since we will only be getting 1 pinnacle/ritual weapon a season it would be nice for Bungie to go back to giving them unique perks.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 10:35 AM PDT

Even though that would make these weapons powerful they will only be that way for a year. Plus they can still try to make them not as powerful as mountaintop and recluse were. Things can be unique and good to use without being meta breaking.

For those of us that have invested substantially in our gear, and are now "curating" our collections, capping Enhancement Prisms at 50 is a bit light.

Please consider removing the cap, or, if the upgrade economy is changing, please add I've players sooner than later so we can make the proper decisions on how to deal with our "heavily invested" armor as we approach power cap.

Can we just not have percents.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 06:37 PM PDT

Can we just have everything show solid numbers instead of percents?
It just seems so unnecessary to have different ways of doing the same thing.

If I need to get 25 kills, tell me I need 25 kills instead of showing 4% per kill.
For bounties that have multiple things that give percents, just say X gives 5 points and Y gives 10 points like some things already have done.

Catalysts should all do this too. The Sweet Business catalysts says a solid number, but many others don't.

Some activities use unnecessary percents too. like an adventure in the edz need you to melee kill some taken for 10% progress each. just say 10 melee kills.

A friendly reminder that we‘ve gotten a total of 1 new exotic Scout Rifle since after Warmind.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 05:48 AM PDT

Out of the 4 exotic Scouts in D2, 2 of them are recycled from D1 (Jade and Mida) and one of the 2 originals (Polaris Lance) has it's exotic perk bugged for I don't even know how long. The other original, Symmetry, was just handed out to everyone who bought Season of Dawn.

As a side note, in the same timeframe (since after Warmind) 6! exotic Handcannons (Ace/Malfeasence/TLW/ Thorn/ Lumina/ Eriana's) have been introduced to D2, 3 of which (Ace/TLW/Thorn) are recycled from D1 as well.

Edit: Other weapons categories, like linear Fusions and sidearms didn't fare much better, but I just wanted to point it out since Scouts and Hand Cannons function quite similarly.

I think I can see the almighty in front of the sun.

I was staring at the sun trying to see the almighty and I can just about make out what I think is its shape. The lighting has changed a bit so I can't quite see anything anymore, but can anyone else confirm? Or have I just burned my eyes out trying to see it.

For a game like this, it's kinda disappointing we can't rewatch cutscenes (with our own characters).

I used to play Warframe for about 7 years and they had an option to rewatch some cutscenes. I would've thought in a game like this where a lot of the game relies on story that would be an option. I just like watching the characters I created (that can't be changed for whatever reason) be seen through certain cutscenes. I just finished Shadowkeep and watching a character I've played and grew to like for months see basically an "evil" version of themselves was really fucking cool, especially the facial animations. It's just kinda disappointing.

Can we get an emote wheel? Four emotes isn't enough anymore!

There are tons of rock solid emotes I'd love to use, but I only get four at a time. An emote wheel, that lets us choose eight, would be a great addition.

I really don’t want to dog on Bungie here, but I have to say one thing.

    Posted: 26 May 2020 06:56 PM PDT

So I work as a product manager, and I will say this: customer feedback is THE MOST valuable thing to enhance the product.

Every week I scroll through so many well thought-out posts about game enhancements, in a time where bungie REALLY needs it. The game is lacking in many areas, and the player base offers up criticism and QUALITY feedback. This post from today is just one example.

    Weapon Perk Feedback

There MUST be a massive bottleneck somewhere. This subreddit is very toxic at times, but I promise you that there's also stuff in here that would make a PM's life such much easier.
