The Moon in Beyond Light is worthless.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:08 AM PST

I am still shocked that Bungie could release an entire destination and activities (sans the Raid), a year ago and today it has been made almost completely worthless. Sure the dungeon drops pinnacle gear that can be dismantled for materials but that is lame. There is almost nothing worth doing in the Moon except for completing triumphs.

    Lame Bungie, lame.

I baked over 1,000+ cookies this dawning, for science!

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:12 PM PST

    Background:

I hadn't played much of last seasons dawning, and had recently taken a break from Destiny prior to Beyond Light, and I was in the mood for some grinding.

Since we had some really efficient farms this year in the form of 1250 Lost Sectors and T2 Wrathborn hunts, I originally wanted to see what the dawning essence capped at. Originally I assumed it would be 999, but alas that was quickly ruined. After my count went over 1,000, I had assumed that it was like gunsmith materials, and they would stack at 9,999. But no, they stack beyond that.

So after my failed attempts at finding the cap, as it would be impossible to grind another 89k dawning essence in the remainder of two weeks, I stopped there, and decided to record my findings.

Very quick time-lapse of 1.5 hours of cookies being turned in.

After turning in 1,067 cookies of different types I received:

    • 2023 Gunsmith Materials
    • 274 Enhancement Cores
    • 179 Gifts in return
    • About 100 to 200 of each planetary material (from gifts in return)

(This after dismantling almost every weapon and armor piece that I received from the cookies.)

For about half of these cookies I did a repeatable bounty for each, resulting in approximately an additional:

    • 5,000 Bright dust
    • 2,760,000 Experience
    • Loss of 1,500 legendary shards used to buy glimmer from spider

    Results:

The gift in return rate seems to be 1/6, as my rate was .1675, and others are reporting a similar rate. While I didn't count every single weapon drop, I can say that no particular weapon was weighted more than the rest.

This produced less dawning spirit % than I assumed/hoped it would, only totaled around 2,700% for the entire event, but I guess it's good enough.

Overall its a pretty bad way to farm considering it took about 35+ hours just to farm these mats, and it took another 1.5 hours to turn them all in. Wouldn't recommend unless you just really like cookies, or really wanted to make sure you got a specific roll on a dawning weapon.

TL;DR I wasted 30-odd hours of my life to bake over 1k cookies, package drop rates are almost guaranteed to be 1/6, still didn't make that much of a difference in the community event as an individual. Would not recommend for anyone that values their time/sanity

It seems like a lot of Destiny players implicitly equate taking a break to thinking the current state of the game is bad. This is wrong, and will lead to player satisfaction of the game being diminished.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:14 AM PST

"Man is the only animal whose desires increase as they are fed; the only animal that is never satisfied."

TL;DR If you take a break, it doesn't necessarily mean you've diminished your love for the game. Everyone is going to get tired of it at some point, and that's perfectly natural. However, to pretend this shouldn't be the case will incentivize Bungie to implement things that cause FOMO.

Now I know this doesn't apply to everyone before you get all "well ackshyually" on me, but I feel like there are still many who take players taking breaks as a bad sign for the game.

The problem with this is that no game, no matter how good, can provide an infinite amount of content. There's always going to be some point or threshold where you simply run out of stuff to do or want to do. Now in basically every genre except live-service games, most would be satisfied with what they've done at this point and move on to something else for a bit. But for Destiny this...doesn't seem to be the case.

Now I think most of us can agree that Beyond Light didn't come short in terms of content in a general sense. Even pretty hardcore players have been busy for the past couple months. But for almost everyone there's going to come a point where you get burnt out and don't want to play anymore and that's not a bad thing! It's difficult to play anything for hours every day for months and still be excited about it. So just know that there's nothing wrong with being satisfied with what you've done, setting the game down for a little, and moving on to something else for a bit. In fact, it's better to do this if you don't want to kill your enjoyment for the game.

But of course, some people will think "if I'm burnt out, the state of the game is bad." And this may be true if many start feeling this after a very short time after a major DLC. However, when you play for, like, 5 hours every day for months, there's not much any game could do to fix your fatigue and to complain and say the game is bad because it can't constantly occupy your time is

    1) setting an unrealistic expectation as well as setting yourself up for disappointment, not just for Destiny but for pretty much any "live-service" game. Like I said, no game can provide an infinite amount of content and if you set enough time to it, you're going to hit a wall where you don't feel like doing much more. If you think this wall is unnatural and shouldn't exist, you're going to be surprised when it slams you in the face.

    2) incentivizing Bungie to do time-gated and/or grindy things and whatnot to increase your engagement if you complain loudly enough. The bounty grind and FOMO or whatever don't come from nowhere, and this type of stuff also de-incentivizes taking a break, which is bad for everyone.

The latter exacerbates the problem because instead of accepting that a game can't infinitely fill a void, it's only causing Bungie to postpone the point when you get tired of it. Hell, for many, it only brings it closer. But until the community accepts this fact, you can't expect Bungie to stop basing their model around keeping you constantly and tirelessly engaged.

It's also appropriate at this time to talk about streamers. Out of everyone, they stand to have the most to lose from taking a break, so it's not surprising that they'll start complaining when they start feeling burnt out. But remember, they are a very slim portion of the playerbase and the game should not solely be designed around their needs. If they say that a game is bad because it's not sustainable for content creators or because it can't constantly keep them engaged, just know that you do not have to share that opinion, or treat them as some kind of figurehead for the community. Because what they are saying and incentivizing is, in this respect, only going to hurt the average Destiny player, and to treat their word as objective doctrine will prove itself harmful.

Now this is just my opinion of course, but I felt it needed to be said. I hope in reading this post you've come to agree with what I'm trying to say, or at least understand my point of view. But, as always, I'd love to see your reasons for agreeing/disagreeing.

Edit: Brb gonna check my sodium levels.

The amount of RNG for weapons is ridiculously higher than any time before

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:35 PM PST

With sunsetting, this is detrimental to the game, regardless of your opinion on sunsetting. Currently there is so much randomness that limited time gear is simply not worth the investment. I'll compare D1 rng to D2 rng with various hand cannons to show what I mean.

In the Taken King, the vanguard hand cannon was Double and Doubt. While it can roll many perks, it rolls multiple options in each slot, so there is never more than a 1/6 chance for each perk to drop. Sights, trait 1, stat perk, and trait 2 have 2, 6, 5, and 6 options respectively. You have a 1/360 chance to get the roll you want. This is for a playlist weapon.

Lets look at the raid hand cannon, Zaouli's Bane to compare. You had 3 chances to get this per week but it was in a larger loot pool than most raids today. There is a single random perk on this weapon, with 4 options. For both the normal and harrowed versions, you have a 1/4 chance to get what you want.

Same applies to the trials hand cannon, The Water Star. One random perk. 1/4 chance.

The TTK Iron Banner hand cannon. Finnala's Peril, is 2x13x5x10 or 1/1300 chance. Same for the Appellant III and Imago Loop. This was the lowest chance I could find for Y2 hand cannons.

Now lets look at D2... the numbers are about to get nasty

Beyond Light's raid hand cannon, Posterity. It has 9 barrels, 7 magazines, 7 of trait1, 6 of trait2, and 4 masterwork options. It picks two of the first two slots, though they arent divided into groups like before. So the odds of getting what you want are about 4.5x3.5x7x6x4, or a ludicrous 1/2646 chance

This raid weapon not only far surpasses D1 raid weapons, but dwarfs even the playlist weapons during taken king. You can get 3 per week plus spoils drops. Who in their right mind would hunt a specific roll, even without sunsetting?

We don't have a playlist hand cannon currently, so lets look at the crucible pulse rifle, Stars in Shadow. You're going to have an easier time getting this to drop, but the rng is insane. It has 9 barrels, 7 magazines, 12 traits in both slots, and 4 masterworks. That is 4.5x3.5x12x12x4 or 1/9072 chance of getting the roll you want.

Other examples: Adept Summoner is 1/1800. Steady Hand (Year 4) is 1/1728. Friction Fire is 1/2592. Hailing Confusion is the same.

For context, the Forsaken raid weapon Nation of Beasts is 1/1260, and the crucible weapon Better Devils was 1/2688, which is also ludicrous, but not as bad.

In Shadowkeep, the raid weapon Ancient Gospel was only 1/864, and the moon weapon Loud Lullaby was 1/2592. Point isn't that these rates are good, but that they have gotten worse in Beyond Light. The new raid hand cannon has over twice the RNG as the previous two.

And don't get me started on armor

This is not just a long grind, its downright sisyphean. Honestly, if this is a ploy to get people to grind more, it isn't working. Many people ignore the first two slots entirely, and others simply aren't bothering with grind because it isn't worth the effort, especially with sunsetting. This needs to be toned down massively.

Hunter mains real quiet all of the sudden since shatter dive combo was discovered as broken.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:13 AM PST

They were all up in arms about warlock abilities when BL first came out but now their kit was found to be busted and it's a ghost town up in here!

All jokes btw, but for real if we're gonna keep shatter dive the way it is let's loosen up in the warlock stasis nerfs

Also I had an idea for a stasis balance in pvp. What if only the supers were able to freeze other guardians in crucible and things like grenade and melee abilities could only slow. I feel like this could make the frustration from being frozen way less common and also make the supers feel even more valuable. Just thought I had, may not be realistic though.

Edit: lots of people instantly getting about the tittle, just want to point out that it's all "all jokes" at almost the beginning of the post :)

    My 2021 Destiny 2 wishlist

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:05 PM PST

So I thought I'd gather some of my 2021 wishes for Destiny 2..

    Feel free to add more.

    1. A social space where I can flex my achievements. I kind of think the tent by Elsie is a prototype for it. Of course it would be nice to have a clan social space too. (the farm im looking at you).

    2. Rift. Not my warlock, he has one. But the pvp game mode.

    3. A revamp of the strike playlist. Going back to destiny 1 year 3 strike playlist with medals etc.

    4. FACTIONS - remember the model in D1. Play any game mode and earn reputation. What I would hope is that there is an ornamental set attached that you unlocked through rank up packages. Upon joining the faction you receive the class item. Then at 25/50/75/100 you earn the armor ornaments from them. Each faction has the same ornaments just with the logos changed. Similar to how the current strike/crucible /gambit ones are. Hopefully with a yearly refresh.

    5. Rotating raids with pinnacles. Make the previous raids relevant.

    6. A merge of Banshee and the Black armory. Let's us craft weapons there starting as a white and upgrading it to legendary status.

    7. A menagerie type activity that is around to stay where we can farm weapons. The weapons get rotated on a seasonal basis.

    8. Sparrow horns and some sparrow mods. Also some ship mods too. Even some salvage missions from Amanda to make her relevant.

    9. Talking of relevance, at least some use for ikora. I mean she just stands there and has done for a year. She built a portal but hasn't done much since.

Really wanted to make it 10...

So number 10... A revamp on the titan bubble super whereby we can roll the bubble around the map (like in the TV show gladiators) to crush the enemy.

In-depth look at the new perk Surplus - Reload, Stability, and Handling

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:23 PM PST

I've been really digging the new perk Surplus recently, and I ended up going through an exhaustive number of tests of it on 7 different weapons. Below are my findings; I'll start with the TL;DR and some build recommendations, then go over methodology and other details.

    The spreadsheet: https://i.imgur.com/q1ITcCS.png

    Summary/TL;DR

    • 3 stacks' buff (i.e. grenade, melee, and class charged - Super doesn't count) is extremely noticeable. You may not have this up that often, but in general, it's better than both a Loader and Dexterity mod for that weapon, even before considering the stability increase. Generally behaved like a +50 to Reload.
    • 2 stacks is generally as good as, or a bit below, a Loader and Dexterity mod combined. The jump from 2 to 3 stacks is about the same as from 1 to 2 stacks. Generally behaved like a +25 to Reload.
    • 1 stack provides a minor benefit but still shaves 1/10 second off your reloads and a couple frames off your swaps. Comparable to the "normal" versions of mods from year 3, before they got buffed to be the formerly "enhanced" versions. Generally behaved like a +9 to Reload.
    • Stability can depend on the gun, but I didn't test how much the reticle shake was affected - only actual bullet spread. For example, Avalanche and Glacioclasm appear not to benefit much at all from the buff to Stability, but it might be reducing the reticle shake and not just... not doing anything.
    • I haven't observed any benefits from double-charged abilities like Sixth Coyote, Starfire Protocol, Withering Blades, etc. EDIT: Thanks to /u/Crystic_Knight in the comments for pointing this out - in actuality, Surplus caps at 3 stacks but all second ability charges count as +1 as well. So having, say, 2 grenades and 1 melee is 3 stacks, same as 1 charge each of grenade, melee, and class.
    • To see what weapons can roll Surplus, click "Randomly Rolls On" on the perk page on light.gg.

    When is this valuable?

    • The best activities for this are those where you're using your abilities judiciously or not very often. Generally, PVP and low-to-mid-tier PVE, respectively, fit this bill, but it depends.
    • Even if you aren't getting more than 1 stack of benefit most of the time, this is a completely free neutral perk - you don't need to be near enemies (unlike Threat Detector), you don't need to hit anything (unlike Zen Moment), you don't even need to fire (unlike Dynamic Sway Reduction), to give a few examples of perks that require very little investment to work. Surplus is just almost always there for you. Because it loves you.
    • It has synergy with Demolitionist and Wellspring, two perks that are pretty common nowadays. Wellspring + Surplus is a beautiful combo.
    • Grenades are probably the most frequently-used ability for most people, but if you don't have a ranged melee ability you're probably not using it in high-level content off CD. Some throwables like Weighted Throwing Knives are also 'sometimes foods'.
    • Because Stasis grenades and melees take notably longer than Light-based abilities to recharge, and those abilities are more powerful, Surplus is probably not a good match for Stasis. Which begs the question,

What subclasses and exotics is this particularly good with?

    • Many Light-based subclasses are built around ability recharge, so most non-Stasis subclasses are pretty appealing. I'm probably about to miss some great Exotic pairings, soz.
    • For Warlocks, this works well with exotics like Verity's Brow, Sunbracers, Eye of Another World, Crown of Tempests, Nezarec's Sin, The Stag, Sanguine Alchemy, and Starfire Protocol. Specific subclasses include Sky and Well Dawnblades, Devour Voidwalker, and Arc Web and Chaos Reach Stormcallers.
    • Class ability uptime depends on your playstyle. Intuition tells me that Warlocks won't leave their rifts charged for very long in high-level PVE, but in lower-tier content it's not really worth it to place down that often. Stag and Alchemy could both have great potential here, letting you get more Rifts and therefore just having it up more often.
    • For Hunters, this works well with exotics like Frostees, Ophidia Spathe, Young Ahamkara's Spine, Lucky Raspberry, Shinobu's Vow, and Sixth Coyote. Specific subclasses include Blade Barrage and Sharpshooter Gunslingers, Pathfinder Nightstalker, and probably all Arcstriders.
    • As for class abilities, Marksman's Dodge is almost certainly getting used off cooldown so that's probably a bad pairing. Gambler's Dodge depends on how you're playing but is more promising. Sixth Coyote definitely helps with this.
    • For Titans, this works well with exotics like Heart of Inmost Light (arguably), Insurmountable Skullfort, Hallowfire Heart, Khepri's Horn, Mask of the Quiet One, Ashen Wake, and Phoenix Cradle. Specific subclasses include Sunspot Sunbreaker, Commander Sentinel, and shoulder charge Striker - arguably also throwing hammer Sunbreaker, shoulder charge Sentinel, and Skullfort Thundercrash.
    • For class abilities, uh... I mean, if you're not playing PVP or using Heart of Inmost Light, you're probably not putting your barricade down. So you keep 1 stack of Surplus for free!

    Testing and Methodology

All footage was recorded at 60 fps on a consistent framerate PC, and frames were measured in Avidemux. Reload and swap speeds were both measured using a mouse macro that clicked and immediately reloaded or swapped, then I held the left mouse button to buffer input so the game would fire the first frame it allowed. Reload and swap time were measured on the last and first firing animation points. Handling swaps were tested using two 84-handling SMGs, and an 84-handling AR in one case, which I measured to have the same swap time as the SMG.

For the fusion rifle, I used a macro to reload 830ms after holding left click, which allowed the burst to fire and then start reloading. In-game, players can easily cut their burst short by swapping too quickly, but you... don't want to do that, so I went with this macro. It had Accelerated Coils so the charge time stat was 820. The reload and swap times are long because they include a full charge of the rifle, as the exact start of charging is somewhat ambiguous with the Omolon animation.

Stability tests are described in the sheet. I lined up the point of first shot using a flat wall in Concealed void, standing at effectively a consistent distance, and did not move the mouse at all. Recoil is rotational, not linear; so distance doesn't really matter anyways except for the scale of the image. The SMG got a little wild on 2 stacks but I believe that's just luck since 2x didn't show that effect on other weapons. And no, I didn't test stability on Crowd Pleaser. rip

For estimating the Reload stat, I used the formula and data detailed in /u/VanHolden304's post here, which was pretty useful. It was a bit off on the base reloads, which is why some of them say "est. buff +1", but correlated well as reload scaled up. I hit an asymptote on Bonechiller's 3x reload which confused me - it could imply 3 stacks applies a reload scalar like Reload mods and many perks, but I'm not inclined to test that at the moment.

Double-Charge Abilities I Tested: Withering Blade, Shinobu's Vow, Ophidia Spathe, Sixth Coyote, top tree Striker, Armamentarium, Claws of Ahamkara, and Starfire Protocol.

Thanks so much for reading. Hope everyone enjoys this perk as much as I do :)
