I spent 6+ hours trying to balancing Rocket Launchers in PvE. Here are my 4 suggestions with data.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:19 PM PST

Hey All, thank you for checking out this post. Rocket Launchers have been pretty much terrible since the Cluster Bomb nerf. My goal here is help get them to become a viable PvE option for the heavy slot. Here are a few relatively easy-to-implement suggestions that may improve the weapons' viability.

    TL:DR

    1. Increase base mag size to 2.
    2. Up base damage by archetype by +10-30% (see chart below)
    3. Add new perks and archetypes to make rolls feel more unique (see Sample Perks below)
    4. Remove/reduce the boss penalty modifiers
    5. (EDIT) Fix the ready speed delay that prevent's you from hip-firing.

Note: even with these buffs, nothing in this game comes close to Eyes of Tomorrow's burst damage (with Adaptive Ordnance's), except the 4th Horseman. IMO, that's perfectly fine and how things should be :)!

    Balance Suggestions

Currently, all legendary RLs deal the same amount of damage and have the same number of reserves, regardless of archetype. Exotics have been balanced separately in another post.

    • Adaptives are now Lightweight frames
Frame Base Mag Damage Change Base Reload (s) Intrinsic Bonus
High Impact 2 +25-30% 3.33 (unchanged) Impact Casing
    Precision 1 +20-25% 3.62 (unchanged) Tracking Module
    Aggressive 2 +15-20% 3.0 -> 3.33 Blast damage
Lightweight (formerly Adaptives) 3 +10-15% 3.17 (unchanged) Killing Wind & +10 Mobility Bonus
(NEW) 60 RPM Rapid-Fire Frame 3 -25% 2.90 Faster Reload on empty mag

    Sample New Perks

    • Pyrocumulus: Rocket explosions leave an elemental cloud that damages and slows enemies in an aoe for short duration. (AOE size increases with blast radius.)
    • Blast Wave: Rocket impact damage penetrates targets in a concussive cone... (cone length and diameter increase with impact and blast radius, respectively).
    • Meteor Shower: After remaining in the air for a short duration (1.5s+), gain bonus handling, accuracy, and rocket damage (7%). Can activate when weapon is not equipped.
    • Tripod: Increases the size of your rocket magazine by 1, up to 3.
    • Impact Vector: Rockets deal massively increased impact damage, but have reduced blast radius. (Concussive Nades..but for rockets and good).

    Enhancing Archetype Identity (optional)

Rocket Launchers don't really feel all that different right now. I'd like Bungie to shift around impact-to-blast damage ratios per archetype might help. Examples:

    • (NEW): Rapid Fires have 3 in the mag, a higher fire rate and bonus reserves at the cost of less damage per shot. Reload faster when mag is empty
    • High Impacts could have a blast damage version of Full Court intrinsically. The farther your rocket travels, the greater the blast damage (up to +5%). These could get the highest possible blast radius values of all rocket launchers.
    • Precision Frames have Tracking Module intrinsically (like they do now), but lack blast radius. Better for PvP.
    • Aggressives could have an increased blast damage to impact damage ratio. Speccing for blast radius and blast radius driven perks would be best for these since they have higher velocity by default.
    • Adaptives are now Lightweights. They offer bonus mobility, toned down handling stats intrinsically, a great best mix of perks, but no stand out stats. Have Killing Wind intrinsically. Great for Gambit.
      • Slow fire rates make these very difficult to balance without completely reworking the archetype. They'd either outperform Aggressives or be redundant. I chose to give them the Lightweight bonus plus one in the mag to offer utility and perk synergy over burst damage and TDO.

That's all I've got. If you read to the end, thank you! Please do check my math for mistakes. I will be posting more balance updates for other power weapons soon. Feel free to share your thoughts, frame ideas, or questions.

If interested, I have damage comparison notes below.

Here's a quick chart that compares the old and new average damage per second (DPS) and total damage output (TDO) values. All values can be found in the damage Damage Chart Madness (PvE, Raid) D2 v3.0.0 spreadsheet (here).. Values have been rounded to the nearest thousand.

Frame Old DPS / TDO New DPS / TDO (in thousands)
    High Impact 11K / 172 K 10 / 224
    Precision (incl. Hakke) 10K / 172 K 12 / 215
    Aggressive 11.9K / 172 K 13.6 / 215
    Lightweight (Adaptive) 11K / 172 K 11 / 204
    Rapid Fire N/A 14.5 / 161
    Eyes of Tomorrow 13 K / 262K 13 K / 262K

Heard my 10yr old son screaming from his room “I GOT THEM ALL DAD, I GOT THEM ALL!” Needless to say he’s enjoying his new Cloudstrike.

    https://youtu.be/krPMeWGmJRI

So my 10yr old has really been enjoying Destiny this season. He's dabbled off and on with the game for the last year or so but since Beyond Light and his new Series X he's loving it (Thank goodness he's set Fortnite down for a bit!) He's joined our clan, loves PvP, and wants to do his first raid soon.

Well the other day he finally got the Cloudstrike (He's been trying to get it for weeks) and he was super excited. I told him to take it into IB now that his LL is high enough and try to get some sweet multikills. 10 minutes later I heard him screaming in his room and he shows me this clip. Proud Destiny Dad moment! Anyways, enjoy and thanks for watching his video. He's been living on a high about this for days. "Dad am I better than you at Destiny now?"

Taking the Honkmoon concept a step further

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:11 PM PST

Bungie should make a pvp mode where there is no abilities just gunplay, like the opposite to Mayhem

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:37 AM PST

They can frame it as we have limited light.

I know a lot of folks are annoyed by stasis, I think it would be a nice break from being slammed by ice.

Also it would just be a cool way to improve gunplay and not depend on abilities so much.

"shaxx: you have limited light guardian! Fight like your life depends on it."

Edit: you still have grenades, class abilities and full mobility with very long cooldowns. no super and no powered melee!

Edit: This is A rotating temporary game mode like mayhem

It's getting really challenging to defend Destiny 2 in it's current state

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:22 AM PST

    I'm very passionate about this game with some 4k hours invested, 80 % of that in PvE and i still play regularly. What has kept me going in D2 and still does to some extent, is the power fantasy; constantly increasing the power of my characters through collecting specific weapon rolls, high stat gear/builds, self-imposed and in-game challenges, completionism and cosmetics but now the rewards are gone, everything is being sunset and the avenues/activities for using said power in order to get more cool stuff is vaulted, thus the accumulated power is superfluous in everything except the raids. Alas, the flawed foundational systems of the game have become glaringly obvious. The game is undoubtedly in a bad state right now. So i've decided to break down the current negatives and positives from my perspective;

    Seasonal Content

The seasonal activity has no gameplay or reward substance or longevity whatsoever. 1 minute seasonal activities like wrathborn hunts cannot be advertised for its current price point

(The Sundial or even better Menagerie; do something similar again.)

    Open World

The open world is dead yet it makes up a huge part of the game. Why manage such a major part of the game in such a neglectful manner?

(Think seamless open world events with a layer of combat and mechanical difficulty like Blind Well. Suggestion to introduce open world difficulty tiers in the style of the Division)

    Endgame/Rewards

The relative complexity and difficulty of the endgame content that is present is not being reflected in the quality of the rewards. The MMO side of the game is being neglected due to how there aren't any options for endgame with reward incentive, longevity and replayability, outside of the raids.

(An extension of another version of the spoils system could be utilized in the the rest of the game. Menagerie/Reckoning comes to mind as an example of how to do this somewhat right.)

    Timesink/Sunsetting

The game resides on "spend hours grinding for X thing" and then have that thing be sunset and thus one's time sink is not being respected. There is no straightforward path to grind the majority of legendary gear that is actually worthwhile, you'd have to scan reddit or discords for suggestions. Armor has never and will never warrant sunsetting, in only provides an artificial excuse for an endgame pursuit that doesn't even have a straightforward path to grind.

Also sunsetting armor and weapons from DC, Tangled Shore and The Moon? These are payed for expansion destinations that new players blindly play which means that infusion capping loot from those destinations at 1060 renders that loot effectively useless in the majority of the game. This information should atleast be communicated in the advertisement for each respective expansion.

Putting a hefty discount on them is not the same thing btw. Sunsetting works to refresh the meta but when you take out 80 % of the guns and armor in the game without clear paths to get most legendaries that are left in the first place, the problem becomes blatantly obvious; it's way overdone.

(New loot is always positive and it's good news that Bungie has acknowledged how they plan to get a lot more creative with new weapons they plan to introduce in the game)

    Player Skill vs RNG

The worthwhile rewards that are in the game right now do not look to activate or respect player skill or character power in any way, XP is bounty grinding, legendaries and exotics are RNG. The challenges reward titles and the occasional cosmetics but nothing that can be utilized in actual gameplay.

(Think something like repeatable challenges that would allow you to slowly progress towards getting the exact weapon roll or armor stat roll you want, thereby both respecting time investment and player skill. Divinity quest/solo flawless prophecy is a good example of how to to incentivise rewards by activating player skill.)

    Game Identity

D2 needs to find a consistent identity in terms of the average difficulty and depth of its activites. It comes down to dissonance and consistency, the game is all over the place.

(Season Of Opulence/Forge/Dawn comes to mind in terms of coherent game identity)

    PvP

PvP was always an afterthought, it was introduced as a selling point but from a constructive POV, separate PvP and PvE balancing is crucial right now: think stasis, mtp, recluse etc. Oh and then some rewards tailored towards PvP would probably help.

Positives in Beyond Light/Season Of The Hunt:

    • Incredible new destination.

    • Interesting and powerful weapon perks.

    • Interesting meta shift.

    • Phenomenal character progression and depth.

    • Great lore to in-game synergy.

    • Player agency over raid loot that's also solo friendly.

    • Solo friendly exotic farming.

    Closing words:

I'm aware of how i'm coming off like a broken record but these points need to be made crystal clear. We need player agency over loot, a reward structure across the whole game that respects time investment and provides longevity and incentive, furthermore the reward structure should serve to activate and respect player skill rather than mindless grinding. Solid seasonal activites with depth, challenge and longevity. The bottom line is that you can make the surface of any expansion as polished as you want for promotional purposes but the gaping hole that serves as a foundation for this game cannot be ignored any longer, enough.

    EDIT:

Sure i'll go outside and sure i'll play other games and take breaks but here's the thing; i work fulltime and D2 is where i choose to devote some of my free time. It's important to realize the difference between projecting your own frustrations on a video game and actually having something constructive to say, this post is a good example of that. And as much as i may do all of the above; that still doesn't take away from the gaping flaws, systematic issues and neglect present in many facets of the game. I just think it's important to speak up when you care about something.

Bungie, please give us a Europa crucible stage

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:26 AM PST

Why are the stages in the current set list for crucible mostly include stages from planets that have been vaulted yet we can't even get a Europa map for crucible. Imagine how cool a Clovis bray facility mixed with the Europa cave systems would be for a crucible map

    Destiny has no mystery anymore

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

Remember when exotic quests had to be found instead of released? Thats when the community was at it's best and super hype around the discover of somthing new.

Remember when a puzzle was discovered and the community would theorize about it nonstop until it was solved?

Remember when people search for another chest in VOG even one probably didn't exist

If there is one thing destiny does best (besides music) it would be mystery... the discovery of whisper of the worm and black spindle, the outbreak prime (d1) puzzle, sleeper stimulant, touch of malice, wall of wishes, oryx's basketball court, no time to explain (d1), and niobe labs.

Back in the day we had to find our exotics and it lead to some historic moments in the community such as datto finish the outbreak prime puzzle or that one guy discovering the whisper mission. It leads to that cool factor moment because it was in the game the entire time and you could have been the one to find it and the entire community will rally together. Nowadays its "hawkmoon releases on this day go pick up the quest from banshee."

The only real mystery we got in shadowkeep was corridors of time... but the reward was bastion... an exotic that was already revealed.

If corridors of time had to be discovered and if the reward wasn't bastion then it would have been one of the best events ever.

Outbreak prime was one of the coolest events in destiny 1 because everyone was trying to solve the puzzle and datto finally solved it and then everyone was in his stream trying to help him with the math parts.

TLDR: Mystery is one of destiny's strong factors and it leads to historic community rallying events that overall make destiny a better game.

While D2 may have its dry periods, inspecting randoms in the Tower and PvP always brings me joy

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:29 PM PST

I love seeing all the terribly rolled random loot people use. I find it so interesting to see what kinds of gear people like using. My personal favorite from over the last few days was a fully masterworked Gnawing Hunger with Drop Mag, Subsistence, and Multikill Clip. None of those perks really work with eachother, but it was got me laughing. If you are looking for something to do and bored at the Tower, give a look at some of the gear others are using, and see if there is wacky rolls that people are using and get a laugh out of it, you could use it.

    If Destiny 2 hadn't gone f2p...

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:24 AM PST

... I would have never tried it out, and I would have missed out on a great game. I am having a blast!

I know there are a ton of problems with the state of the game, and you experienced players struggle with Bungie's decisions and wanting this game to be the best it can be. I joined as f2p when Beyond Light released, and then enjoyed it enough to buy the legacy DLC's for the story + Beyond Light at Christmas. I have so much to do, it is overwhelming. I have 7+ exotic quests, so many materials/mods/gear I need to accumulate, so many dependencies on Banshee-44, and so much to learn.

And as much as I suck at PVP, I find that if I just focus on capturing zones in Control or banking motes in Gambit, I still win often enough to do bounties and enjoy it while gathering pinnacle gear to reach 1260 (at 1251 now). I knew stasis was evil from PVP before even starting the Beyond Light campaign!

I've encountered my fair share of struggles as a new player:

    • Having no clue what gear to keep
    • Wasting ammo on immune enemies with no clue what to do instead
    • Having no clue where to go when doing the strike playlist as a new light (thank you for all the carries!)
    • Having no clue how to make public events heroic (sorry for finishing events early...I've bookmarked a guide for making them heroic now!)
    • The game logging me in to cinematics for expansions I didn't have and starting me on planets I'd never been to. (First time logging in it was BL/Europa, another time it was Forsaken/Tangled Shore)

      • Imagine starting a game where every character's dialogue includes mourning for a partner you've never met, then playing the expansion that starts with that death, while doing a seasonal hunt with the revived character of the person you killed for killing your partner while helping them work through their PTSD!?
    • Shadowkeep final quest bugs (how can the final quest in an expansion storyline be so buggy!? Was it ok at launch and then a recent update messed it up?)

But for now, this game is really fun for me. I know the more grindy aspects of the game are in my near future, but I'm ok with that. So thank you for all the carries. Thank you for all the guides/threads on this subreddit. Thank you for caring about Destiny enough to keep it going for so long.

Details on how to do this in my previous post. You seem to get two shots at this: once after "Rising Rebellion" (solo), and once after killing Eramis, then fast-travelling to Beyond (solo). I believe it has something to do with cutscenes messing with Eris' collision.

Bungie, please add a knockout system for bright engrams

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:09 AM PST

After season level 100 you only get bright engrams every few levels. The past 7 engrams I've received, I've gotten shaders and transmat effects that I already have. It feels bad to get duplicates when there are hundreds of eververse items that I do not have. One item in particular that I've been waiting for is the ornament for vesper of radius which hasn't been sold in the eververse store since the beginning of time.

I would love a future raid on Titan

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:12 PM PST

When Titan gets sunrised I would love a raid to take place in a facility somewhere in the depths of the moon.

I really enjoyed the mechanic in the Atraks encounter from Deep Stone Crypt, where you fly up to space in a pod.

I think it would be just as awesome in a dive scenario, descending into the oceans of Titan.

There's more that Titan can give us, and I truly think a raid is something that it can provide.
