SMG's Were Created in And Are Balanced Around a Game That No Longer Exists

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 02:24 PM PST

Destiny 2 vanilla was a completely different experience from Destiny 1 and what Destiny 2 is now. PVP wise we had slower ttk, no special weapons and instead they were all heavies, slower movement and ability recharge rates, 3 hit melees, and 4v4 casual game modes. With a good deal of these differences in mind, the smg was created to fill in a void, that being infrequent shotguns and worse melees on less chaotic maps. Those voids have all since been filled, leaving smg's in a rough spot. Special weapon options in shotguns and fusion rifles have completely taken over smg optimal range. SMG's don't kill faster than a behemoth sliding at you with a felwinters, nor a top tree dawn skating at you with an atsral horizon. In very close range where the melee is jank af in this game, you are most likely gonna lose unless you just start punching too, which then raises the question of "why am I using this thing"? Sidearms work because of a great buff given to them a while back making them very sticky, smg's have large recoil and do not feel sticky at all and have too long ttk's for their intended use range. Something has to change for these weapons to be viable. They are so cool in theory, in practice they fall flat due to an outdated balance philosophy.

Bungie, the January 14th TWAB Has Further Tipped Players and Content Creators Against Sunsetting. References Included.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:07 AM PST

Well folks, this recent TWAB has seemingly caused even more community outrage than what it probably set out to resolve.

The issue at hand, once again, is sunsetting. It's a topic of conversation that has continued from the time it was announced, through the time it was implemented, and now after a few seasons of it having taken effect. In this particular case, sunsetting in relation to reissued loot.

Note: If you are from /r/all, I left a small section at the end explaining what sunsetting is. Welcome!

    Forsaken and Shadowkeep Sunsetting

Since the beginning of sunsetting, one of the top complaints was the sunsetting of loot tied to the Forsaken and Shadowkeep expansions. Some feedback was specific to Forsaken and Shadowkeep by name, while some said that DLC loot should not be sunset. While not the main topic of discussion here, it should be noted that some players may have different interpretations of what "DLC" includes, so keep that in mind.

Nevertheless, Bungie sunset the loot anyway, much to the disappointment of others.

Reissuing of Forsaken and Shadowkeep Loot

First, I want to make something perfectly clear here: a lot in the community did request that Bungie add new perk options to weapons if they were going to be re-issued. This is what Bungie has done in the reissuing of Dreaming City and Moon weapons by introducing them with new perk options, some tied to specific dungeons.

Yet, this still triggered pain points in players for a few reasons:

    1. Players are unable to raise the infusion caps of existing weapons and armor that they have.
    2. Due to (1), players having to re-grind for weapons and armor that they already have completely invalidates grind-time already invested.
    3. Not all loot was reissued: loot that could be targeted via the Lectern of Enchantment was completely ignored. This leaves a lot of expansion weapons still sunset.
    4. For weapons that were reintroduced, there is no guarantee that players will be able to obtain a roll as-good or better than their existing rolls.

Let us not forget the blaring issue here: Forsaken and Dreaming City loot was sunset just two (2) months ago, and the player base is now being asked to re-grind again for the sake of grinding.

    Content Creator Fatigue and Unrest

In what appears to be a rare instance in Destiny's entire franchise history, the player base and content creators are more or less completely united on the feelings of sunsetting. The recent TWAB has functioned as a tipping point.

While some do not care for or do not agree with content creators, they are still very important for a video game. Content creators were responsible for Among Us going from virtually no players to having hundreds of thousands on Steam alone, and millions when considering its other platforms. The truth is, content creators function effectively like a marketing engine for games. While they are playing a game they enjoy, they are also advertising the game to their audiences. Content creators largely do not play games they do not enjoy, and do not play games their audience does not enjoy.

For the past two months now, many prominent content creators have taken to their respective platforms to discuss sunsetting, and with the exception of perhaps CammyCakes and a small handful of others, most have changed from being pro-sunsetting to indifferent or outright against it. These content creators collectively account for all areas of the game, as some focus on PvE, PvP, or both.

Some were against it from the start and had to endure loads of "internet abuse" for putting their foot down so early. Here are some examples:

Bonus: In Bungie's tweet for the TWAB, there is quite a bit of feedback about sunsetting and reissued loot.

This should be a no-brainer: content creators actively criticizing the game is not a good look. Even worse are content creators announcing that they are taking breaks from Destiny for an indefinite amount of time, or outright quitting. This markets to their audiences that the game is not fun to play. Destiny should be a fun game.

    Players Putting Down Destiny

Due to the introduction of sunsetting, it has fatigued players to the point that they have quit the game, indefinitely.

Joe Blackburn made a point in his "Rewards" TWAB post to the effect of wanting to make every season a good season to get started in Destiny. I feel that this goal was already partially achieved through the availability of viable seasonal loot, as well as the availability of targeted loot farms, such as Nightfall-specific loot (which is now sunset). Sunsetting has the opposite effect as intended, as any returning player will face the reality that their gear is no longer viable. Without sunsetting, they may have not had the newest gear, but their current gear could be used in the meantime. Sunsetting means that all old gear is obsolete, period. When Bungie raises the power floor next season, all gear sunset at the end of Season of Arrivals will likely not be viable even in the base Strike playlist, leaving only the Crucible and possibly the PvE portion of Gambit.

Even targeted loot farms such as the Wrathborn Hunts are no longer appealing. It no longer makes logical sense to put any more time than absolutely necessary to obtain a weapon, because any additional time is additional waste through sunsetting. I can personally attest to this. I have given up on getting a Blast Battue with Spike Grenades, Clown Cartridge, and Chain Reaction. There is no point in me wasting time grinding for a perfect roll when the weapon will be sunset. I surely am not going to waste my time grinding a Blast Battue just to have it sunset and then reissued so that I can have the pleasure of grinding it again.

Player fatigue will continue to build as seasons go on. Paul Tassi argued this point perfectly. Every single season will be about loss instead of gain. Season of Dawn weapons are about to head out the door. Will these weapons be reissued two months later with the expectation that players grind them again? How about Season of the Worthy? Seventh Seraph weapons are some of the sleekest looking in the game and work well with shaders. They are also an integral component of the ecosystem of Warmind Cells. Will these weapons be sunset? Hopefully sunsetting will be reversed by then.

We are now two seasons into sunsetting in its current state. Seven months and counting. The feedback is immense and the damage it is causing to the game is becoming irreparable with players permanently quitting and content creators seriously considering whether they should abandon ship and move on to something else.

Bungie, for once I believe you need to actually listen to the community instead of simply hearing. Sunsetting, while may have made logical sense in some respects, has been a complete and utter failure in implementation. It is time to revert sunsetting and return to the drawing board. Try something else. This is not the way. It really feels like the game is collapsing in on itself, like a black hole. As a person who really got hooked on this game in August 2020, it is a horrible sight to see.

    Addendum

I am amazed and truly grateful for all the feedback and attention given to this post. It is my hope that this catches the attention of the community managers /u/Cozmo23 and /u/dmg04, as it provides yet another hub of community and content creator feedback.

I spent my entire morning reading all of your comments. There are simply too many stories of friends losing other friends and clanmates, one-by-one, due to the state that the game is in. Personally, I cannot even get friends to try the game in its current state. They refuse to touch it. Sunsetting has scared new players away.

It is my hope that this is the turning point for Bungie.

For users visiting from /r/all who are not familiar with the game:

    • Sunsetting is a term used to describe the level-capping (levels being called power) of gear inside of Destiny. Since gear can only be infused (brought up) to a certain level, it will reach a point where it is no longer useful in end-game activities, or activities period.
    • Attempting to use a capped weapon will cause damage dealt to enemies to be significantly lower.
    • Attempting to use a capped armor piece will cause damage received from enemies to be significantly higher.

For users who think that I should have written more about the community and less about content creators:

Got you covered. This post has a section on content creators because it seems that content creators and a majority of the community are seemingly unified on this one issue, unseen since Curse of Osiris.

I wrote the following a little over a month ago, in response to the "Rewards" TWAB by Joe Blackburn: Bungie, I really appreciate the "Rewards" update, but it seems that some community sentiments were completely missed

    A note about Bungie Forums:

In the Destiny 2 forums, almost every post in the top ~10 is about sunsetting. Just wanted to include a shout-out to those folks as well!

Is It Too Much To Ask For STRIKE Specific Rewards NOT Nightfall?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:22 AM PST

Like i get it, strikes are legit free and casual and stuff, but sometimes i wanna just blast through strikes for an hour with the new raid weapons I got or whatever. I miss being able to just hop on for some strikes with friends to dick around and possibly get a cool weapon like treads upon stars, imago loop, or grasp of malok. I'm cool with having nightfall rewards too, maybe even have nightfall strikes be able to drop curated rolls of the special weapons while regular strikes cant IDK.

Just seems like the playlist exists to get your bounties done and leave as of now.

Outside of the forsaken campaign a few years ago and the Fanatic strike they just seem to exist there. I'm curious if Bungie plans on expanding them into more strikes , destinations, or a raid. Feels bad to have a whole enemy race sunsetted.

It's time we had another full scope Development Update like we Did in early 2018.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:27 AM PST

Christopher Barret did a wonderful development update back in 2018 during the height of player unrest with the state of the game. It outlined their plans for new systems, PvP overhauls, and other QoL changes. It gave us a very good road map of what to expect for upgrades to the game (not a road map of DLC content).

Luke Smith had 3 good Director's cuts in 2019 (1) (2) (3) and one in 2020. These unfortunately did not give us a good timeliness of things like the 2018 one, a rather focused on overall goals.

We saw one Development Update about Loot and Rewards from Joe Blackburn, but it only focused on one area of player discontent and had a very disconnected timeline. It would be nice to see one (or more than one) covering the entire scope of the game with a full timeline to give us an idea of when changes are currently planned for (subject to change with Covid-19).

Hey Bungie? Where are the weapons that “shit on everything”?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 12:43 AM PST

Andrew Hopps wrote this tweet in response to the TWAB announcement of sunsetting (of just weapons at the time).

    https://mobile.twitter.com/kingkeoua/status/1261070618390228992?lang=en

If you can't read the tweet it says, and I quote:

"You know how Recluse shits on everything in PvE? Weapon sunsetting means we can add more weapons that shit on everything and they just eventually fall behind in power. New weapons that shit on everything can be added without constant power creep. I'm very excited for it."

Never mind the sunsetting doesn't 99% of PVP, but anyway.

I'm not seeing these weapons that absolutely "shit" on everything I had before. Most of the weapons we got with BL and the Season are pretty bog standard. We got some interesting perks but fairly average weapons.

    So Bungie, where's our "shit"?

EDIT: The extremely cynical part of me thinks Bungie doesn't see the point in making "shit on everything" weapons themselves because they know they will expire in a year.

Season of the Hunt, Worthy and Undying have been the weakest of the seasonal model since year 3 began. None of them focused at all on the endgame.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

Dawn didn't focus much on the endgame, either BUT it did have a heroic version of sundial which was easy endgame but still endgame like. Arrivals brought the dungeon prophecy, which was VERY well received. Undying brought a hoard mode that didn't really add to the endgame. Worthy brought GM's (which weren't repeatable) and Trials (which the oven wasn't even finished preheating on it). Hunt brought mini missions with bosses that get melted from Xenophage that are not endgame at all. We know we have VoG later in the year, which will be awesome endgame content. I hope the other two seasons add meaningful content to the endgame.

If raid loot drops with a higher infusion cap each new season, previously already acquired drops should have their cap updated.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:26 PM PST

    Title.

If Bungie could bump the infusion cap for all my raid loot during Season of Arrivals, they can do it each season. Spending another year to grind out a god roll raid weapon when you already have it is infuriating.

This state is a direct consequence of a game director trying to cram his wow fantasies into a shooter

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:11 PM PST

Lashlayer's head became the first piece in a quest chain to build The Scepter of the Shifting Sands, an artefact that would ring the Scarab Gong and open the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj for everyone on the server. But doing so was a gargantuan effort. To fuel the war effort, players in each faction had to gather just over a million different supplies from 90,000 copper bars to 250,000 Mageweave Bandages—each one handcrafted by an actual player.

Meanwhile, Smith and his guild were racing to beat top Alliance guilds and build the sceptre first. Part of that race involved grinding reputation points with the Brood of Nozdormu by killing Qiraji monsters and turning in their carapaces.

    Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/destiny-2-game-director-luke-smith-talks-about-wows-most-ambitious-world-event-ever/

This among many other cases are the direct templates for our oh so creative quests. What our Scarab Lord forgets is that destiny is a shooter that captured people due to its tight af shooting mechanics.Things we do should be built around that: Shooting.

As we've seen, you can't apply WOW logic like sunsetting to this. There are people here with 10k kills on a goddamn Fighting Lion or Antiope-D, because they are in love with that gun and it feels fun.Unlike WoW our equipment isn't just increasing numbers, it's how the gun sounds, reloads, looks and feels.

    [link] [comments]

Bungie adding guns to the dungeons with exclusive perks only in that area got me thinking. What about instead of that, make perks exclusive to playlists? That way all weapons have a chance of being exciting instead of just one or two.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:08 AM PST

Nothing sounds fun about the returning weapon set up to me. I don't want to run dungeons for weapons I already have only for a chance at a gun with perks exclusive to that playlist. I tried to think of what would make all loot more interesting instead of just that one weapon. What if you saw a legendary engram and actually got a little excited that it could be a world drop with the exclusive perk. Why not have the perks exclusive to certain playlists? For example, celerity could drop as a perk on any legendary weapon that dropped from trials. (Dire promise random drop or scholar from the chest, wouldn't matter) Or strikes getting one for all as an exclusive drops for all weapons that you obtain in the playlist? (Seventh Seraph Saw world drop or Xenoclast from the chest)

*Forget about the fact that celerity should just be on weapons and taking up a perk spot. Look at the idea.*

This would be for new perks that bungie adds, not perks. I just used celerity and one for all for the sake of the idea.

    Thoughts?

I hope in the near future Bungie embraces more enemy themed type weapons/armor.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:04 AM PST

The possibilities are endless in regards to weapon and armor aesthetics as well as function. I've been dying to get my hands on a Hive Boomer gun forged by banshee or we could even get Omolon to create some energy beam weapon with an Ogre's face attached to it to shoot purple laser beams. There have also been excellent fan made armor concepts that makes almost everyone that looks at it drool with delight. I would love to grind for these types of things.

Edit: I am not saying 120s are trash, they are obviously meta, but they have a big weakness and that is a bad TTK. To beat them you have to learn how to take advantage of that.

Most players have probably never heard of Sand Wasp-3au.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:01 PM PST

We've all dismantled it a thousand times. Why? It's just a filthy blue. You can't take it anywhere with you. Try to use it in a raid, you'll get kicked from orbit.

But what if the more you used Sand Wasp-3au, it eventually became a legendary weapon with a unique perk that you could forge in the black armory?

What if it became an exotic after having used it to slay the most badass aliens and guardians in the galaxy?

What if it continued to get stronger and you were able to wield it in any of the games toughest activities, never having to worry about what is and isn't "meta"; using whatever you want to use because it's yours, and it feels good.

What if greens and blues weren't completely useless?

Might solve the loot problem. A guy can dream.

    Let us help new players

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:27 PM PST

Ok hear me out before downvoting.

I love Destiny, I've been playing since d1 beta on the 360 and to this day the friends that remain were met randomly either through an lfg or random message from at the tower to do a raid. And, well if not for the help of random strangers I wouldn't have stuck with this game as long as did.

So my main point is allow us to help random new guardians. I don't need loot as a thanks, just give us the option to matchmake with them for their initial missions. Make it something to opt into and everyone who wants to play solo can and if someone wants the help they can get it.

And randomly joining someone from the roster screen uninvited seems rude so I tend to avoid that and many don't ever read messages anymore or avoid/have notifications off so that's a no go.

I want this game to succeed, I want people to enjoy something that's brought a lot of good times for me and others. So maybe if we show new guardians a helping hand they might stick around.
