The Time To Reach Transmog Cap Requires Nearly 7 Days of IN-GAME Play Time (Math Inside)

    Posted: 12 May 2021 02:12 PM PDT

It's been found that you acquire 1 Synthrand every 2 minutes while in combat. This means you can't acquire another strand for a full 2 minutes after acquiring your last one. It doesn't matter how many kills you get in this time between those 2 minutes.

This puts the total time to reach transmog cap on one character at 53 hours and 20 minutes or 6 days and 16 hours for three characters.

Let me repeat that again, 6 days and 16 hours.

Once again, this is in-game play time. Most AAA single player story driven games take around the 40 hour mark to complete. You could beat a single player game 4 times over before reaching transmog cap in comparison. There's a compromise to be reached between what they're trying to monetize and respecting our time investment. This isn't it.

In fact, the real time here is even longer than what I listed when you consider how people actually play the game. I computed the time with the consideration that you're being completely optimal and doing nothing but efficiently farming transmog tokens. When viewing it all this way, there may as well not even be a cap because no one, unless you no life the game, is going to reach it. This is a F2P mobile game practice and I'm not here for it.

If you're interested in the math of how I got that time, stick around to read the rest below.

    The Math

    • 150 Synthstrand needed for a bounty
    • 1 Synstrand per 2 minutes
    • 300 minutes (5 hours) to acquire 1 bounty
      • This is 5 hours of being in combat mind you

Most bounties you buy require ~4 activity completions on an easy one. Some other bounties are more annoying such as killing 50 champions. I'll be using the 4 activity completion bounties as an example.

    • 4 Activity completions needed
      • Roughly ~15 minutes to complete a core activity
        • ~10 minutes in the activity itself
        • ~5 minutes match making, going through loading screens, and other fluff
    • 1 hour in total to complete a bounty

There's a bit of overlap here, as you'll be getting more Synthstrand as you complete activities. Now let's compute the overlap.

    • 4 Activities
      • ~10 minutes in each will net you 5 Synstrand per activity
      • 20 Synthstrand will be generated in the hour it takes you to complete these activities
    • This (artificially) lowers the cost of a transmog bounty to 130 Synthstrand if you're being optimal.

Now we have our numbers, 1 hour for a bounty completion and 260 minutes (4 hours and 20 minutes) of farming Synthstrand for a total time of 5 hours and 20 minutes to complete one transmog bounty. Because I computed this with overlap, this is the best case scenario where you're neglecting everything else in the game and solely playing to farm more Synthstrand.

The transmog cap is 10 per season per character. Multiplying our time of 5 hours and 20 minutes by 10, we get 53 hours and 20 minutes of in-game play time to reach transmog cap on one character. I don't know about you, but over 2 days of game play to get 10 of something doesn't set right with me.

Now what if you do this for all 3 characters? That puts you at 6 days and 16 hours to reach transmog cap on all your characters. Keep in mind once again, this is considering you're being completely optimal and doing nothing in the game but grinding transmog tokens. This also will have to be done every season. Multiply this by 4 for the total number of seasons in a year and you're looking at almost a full month of play time (26 days and 16 hours) to get a total of 120 transmog tokens.

Bungie, I've noticed that you literally did not make a Lore Book image for the Synthstrand quest so I made you one that I feel it represents how our community feels about it.

My clan mate just did 10 strikes and got 51 synthstrand. Transmog SHOULD NOT have both a super grindy system, AND a cap.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 11:13 AM PDT

    Basically title...

I truly belive this systems GRIND is enough to influence whales to buy synthweaves from EV

As we all said, The cap DOESNT NEED TO EXIST

The grind is more than enough to keep most players in check (maybe the grind is even a bit overtune RN)

I stand my case, there should be no cap

    Posted: 12 May 2021 02:53 PM PDT

Why in the goddamn fuck did Bungie BUFF stasis grenades, and only on Hunters no less???? Coldsnap was already a bitch to deal with and now Shatterdive will be annoying again because of the glacier buff. And to rub more salt on the wound, not only is the new Warlock aspect useless af but YOU CAN NO LONGER ICARUS DASH WHEN SLOWED!!! It wasn't even in the patch notes! Not only that, but the blink from Nova Warp is removed when slowed too! Good job, let's nerf the worst subclass in the game and buff the best subclass in the game. Cool

Ridiculously low drop rate for Synthstrand

    Posted: 12 May 2021 08:24 AM PDT

I know Bungie wants to make this as painful as possible to force people to spend money on transmog, but I played for a solid 6 hours yesterday doing strikes, nightfalls, Gambit and crucible and only got 100 synthstrand. And all this BS is just to get a bounty and do more ungodly grinding.

I am NOT a free to play person. I spent $50 on Beyond Light and the season, which was almost the price for a full game (and Beyond light was not enough content for the price), and I paid for the current season as well. Using F2P as an excuse to gouge loyal customers is total BS. It's a sleazy move Bungie.

At this rate, it will take weeks to get enough materials for just one set of armor.

    • If anyone knows of any cheese for getting Sythstrand, please post!

EDIT: I didn't include that you get two armor sets worth of materials, but anything beyond that is frustrating as F to deal with

New assets are hard. We get it. But can I please have a better reason why I'm fighting waves of red legion again than "vex simulation"

    Posted: 12 May 2021 03:18 PM PDT

Title. This is ofc preference, but I'm getting really tired of the vex "simulating" all the other factions when bungie needs to switch up the enemy variety and wants to throw 7 year old assets at us.

It's becoming bungies narrative equivalent of the "it was all a dream" trope.

I like the new season so far, just a petty grievance.

Bungie, the Transmog system is beyond bad.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 07:45 AM PDT

No that we know how to do it and how it works its bad.

    • Bounty Grind - Are you kidding? 10 gambit matches. 40 champion kills. These are more than 'a little grindy.'

    • Synthstrand - Infrequent drops. A full day of playing all playlist activites got me 40. I don't have enough to even buy a new bounty after a whole day of play.

    • The Cap - Say we grind through and spend the time (that you clearly don't respect) to do all the bounties, we still are capped. We have known since the day of the announcement that the cap is BS.

Don't wait till next season or next expansion to fix this. Please.

Edit: As others pointed out, its worse.

It's not based on kills it's based on time. You get a synth strand for every two minutes you spend in the thrall way. The only way to receive the synth strands is by killing something every two minutes. What you have seen will mark you forever 45 points an hour ago* So if it's 150 for one bounty, that's 5 hours per bounty? So getting enough for all 30 bounties per season is 150 hours? And that's just killing! Imagine all the time in loading screens, in transition sections, or in the tower trying to free up vault space. Probably at least 200 hours in practice.

It is a disgusting cash grab. They want it to be as difficult as possible for you to get it so you'll pay the money. A set will cost you nearly as much as the whole season.

Hey Bungie, I thought we learned back in 2017 that timegating our farm was a bad move.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 04:54 PM PDT

So why did you not only monetize the most requested feature in 7 years of Destiny and also put a massive grind behind the F2P variant, but also timegate the amount of Synthstrand we can farm with an invisible cooldown.

I had my suspicions when I had 50 Synthstrand after a full day of playing, now thanks to RaidSecrets we know for sure that you did it.

Back in 2017 you put an invisible exp gain reduction in the game to stop us from getting Bright Engrams. There was an outrage and you quickly had to remove the penalty.

So tell me, why did you do it again? Is D2 really performing so badly that you have to resort to EA levels of scummy MTX?

EDIT: While we're at it, why THE FUCK is there an item cap on Synthweaves. WHY THE FUCK can I only hold 15 at a time.

Menagerie’s loot system was perfect. Why can’t we have it back?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 03:49 PM PDT

Edit: I'm not asking for Menagerie itself back. Poor choice of wording in the title on my part. I understand why it was retired. What I miss is the loot structure. You set up your quest item, ran the activity and got the exact gun you wanted and you even got to choose the masterwork.

I feel like Bungie just cannot take steps forward without steps back. I don't remember hearing a single person complain about Menagerie. It was fun enough that it didn't get too boring too quickly. The loot focusing was perfect; enough narrowing down rolls without giving us exactly what we wanted too quickly. Why was that same formula not reimplemented? Every focused loot system placed since has taken a little bit more away from us every season.

-The fractaline farm from Season of Dawn made it so we got the gun we wanted, but it was a totally random roll (granted you could get 400+ of that gun in about an hour).

-Season of the Worthy had the same bounties, but you actually had to do them

-Season of Arrivals introduced Umbrals, which were great. The downside was you couldn't choose the exact gun you wanted, but a 50/50. However, the engrams just passively built up in no time at all.

-Season of the Hunt where we could choose perks we didn't want to get or choose the masterwork, but there was only a chance the gun we actually wanted was selectable (and the guns were pretty lame anyway).

-Now we have our current target loot farm... Umbrals again, but we have to jump through all these super tedious loops to STILL have just a 50% chance of getting a completely random roll on the gun that we actually want (I'll be honest, if it's different this season, I'm sorry. I haven't even checked it out yet.)

Like... wtf? What was so harmful to the health of the game that we can't bring back the targeted loot farm from the days of The Menagerie? Mix in some world drops in there, too. It doesn't HAVE to be only seasonal weapons. Why can they never deliver a positive change without countering it with a negative? I just don't understand...

Massive Breakdown Weapon Stats Spreadsheet has been UPDATED for Season of the Splicer! Includes Times-to-Kill (with a Calculator that can take into account Resiliency Levels, Perks, Damage Boosts, and Player Accuracy effects), and other relevant stats!

    Massive Breakdown Weapon Stats Spreadsheet

Changes Made Since My Last Post:

I've removed a significant number of weapons that were sunset if we haven't seen them be reintroduced to the sandbox in a year or so, unless they had a special function (like raid or pinnacle weapons). Please let me know if there are any weapons that I have removed that you feel should be included, and provide reasoning why.

For the Archetype Time-to-Kill Comparison Tool, in order to get it to work you just need to download yourself a copy of the spreadsheet, and then it will allow you to change:

    1. Opponent's Resiliency Tier
    2. Your own estimated critical hit accuracy percentage
    3. Any perk or effect you would like (both can be selected at once to display combined damage increase)

All of these things will automatically show you the updated TtKs and shots-to-kill for each archetype (and a lot of exotics) with the selected conditions. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!

Note: Some weapons still need to have their TtK values added in, like Symmetry and Duality.

I don't get the point of Synthcord

    Posted: 12 May 2021 03:35 AM PDT

It's literally a pointless intermediary. You get 100 of it from the bounty and need 100 to make a Synthweave. All it accomplishes is making me go back to Ada-1 for no other reason than to convert it. Just give us the Synthweave and call it a day.

The most disappointing thing about this season is that Outbreak, Whisper, and 4th Horseman didn't get their catalysts added back to the world loot pool.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 04:28 PM PDT

It feels really bad to have relevant content that isn't vaulted simply be unobtainable because Bugnie didn't put in the effort to bring it back. These are also catalysts that are almost necessary for the weapon to be a worthwhile pick for your loadout.

Please bring them back in the loot pool or just give them to players that already own the weapons if that is too much work.

i'm going to be frank, the new exotic feels really bad in practice, like a relic of a pre forsaken dlc bad.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 05:21 PM PDT

This thing feels like a waste of an exotic slot honestly. It's not the worst weapon i've ever used, but in practice this thing just feels very underwheliming. Shame too as on paper i think it's a great idea, kill an enemy, have an on demand stasis shot for combination with a good heavy or special ammo weapon.

The problem is the stasis shot has a timer so no saving it as a utility, it eats an entire clip, and the sidearm's handling as a whole just isn't that great. Not the worst, but it really feels like an exotic from from the days of the double primary meta of yore where a utility like this would have been great, but is just kind of bottom shelf in the current game.

Were XP gains from the seasonal challenges nerfed?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 07:35 PM PDT

They give like 30k per completion now. Completing a challenge from last season without the weekly XP boost that gave 2x XP would give me a rank and like 60% of another rank. Did Bungie nerf the amount of XP given by completing these challenges?

The Transmog screen overview has the weirdest unnatural light source for previewing armor.

    Posted: 12 May 2021 06:32 AM PDT

Am I alone in thinking that the light source is either too harsh or angled too high when previewing the full set? It seems a lot of shaders, especially when they're shiny don't represent the colors you see in game or in other menu's. I think it should just be from the perspective of the character screen, or atleast with same light source if anything. Thoughts?
