Focused Feedback: Balance Changes & Update Frequency

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:56 AM PST

    Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to Bungie. Focused feedback threads and discussion questions are created by the DTG subreddit moderation team without input from Bungie.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Balance Changes & Update Frequency' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome. Here are some sample discussion questions:

    • What is your general feedback on balance changes done by Bungie in the past?
    • What is your feedback concerning the balance changes which were announced in the latest TWaB (sniper nerfs, izanagi nerf, etc... )?
    • What are your thoughts concerning the frequency with which Bungie updates weapon balance and sandbox balance?

Regarding most hot topics revolving around general weapon balance, DMG recently left this comment summary:

Good morning. I hope you had a good weekend.

We'll go through the threads today to pull out any new feedback that may have surfaced since Thursday/Friday, and be sure to bring it to the team. If we have any information to share with you, we'll be sure to! Here's a quick list (off the top of my head as I'm still at home) of what we have so far:

    • Players would like to see Sandbox adjustments more frequently

    • When adjustments (nerfs) are made, they'd like smaller changes to occur, so favorite weapons or archetypes don't feel like they've fallen to the bottom of the barrel

    • Some bosses feel handcrafted for Snipers, so the upcoming changes feel like they'll make those encounters much more difficult to approach

    • 150 HandCannons feel to be the best in class right now, and players would like more variety

    • While AutoRifles got some slight buffs, players would like to see more love

    • Scout Rifles continue to feel underwhelming compared to other weapons in PvE and PvP

    • Quite a few PvP-centric players appreciate the upcoming changes, but would love to see examples in video form

    • What about abilities/armor? (Spoilers - we'll be talking about those soon!)

We've also seen questions surrounding the timing of certain balance passes, and why some outliers stay at the top for so long. Another question would be "why haven't certain aspects of feedback been addressed after we've given it for a while?"

Frankly, I do not have a good answer for that. Could be a lack of prioritization. Could be that player feedback sometimes clashes with usage statistics, or even feedback from other community members. (Ex: Fusion rifle lovers enjoyed going toe to toe with shotguns, but players strongly desired nerfs)

Sometimes, changes are planned for future seasons when we have more time/resources to ensure the changes are made correctly. There's also sometimes a seasonal tie-in to balancing, so the changes feel more natural to the playspaces you'll be in or the challenges you'll face. We can't necessarily illustrate these scenarios when we share details on the changes (because spoilers!), but we can look to improve these comms as we continue.

We always have room for improvement in the live-game aspects of Destiny, whether it be communication, balancing, narrative, or other. Thank you to everyone who's given feedback over the years, and thank you to everyone who will continue to as Destiny 2 continues to evolve.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

I Turned the Two-Tailed Fox Lore into an Anime Theme Song

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 07:04 AM PST

If you're unaware, the lore card for the Two-Tailed Fox straight-up reads like anime theme lyrics. Ever since I read it, I've been wanting to make the song for it. After some failed attempts, I finally got it done:

"Kitsune! (The Two Tailed Fox Song)" Lyric Video

I made some slight structural changes to the format, modified one line to be spoken in Japanese, and threw in a couple "yeahs."

Aside from the lore card itself and all the art that surrounds Daito-brand items in the world of Destiny, inspiration came from the Trigun theme, the Sword Art Online: Alicization song "ADAMAS" by LiSA, and a long-held love of absurdly bombastic hair metal.

I've been fervently checking the sub and YouTube to make sure no one else had put a version out there and I'm preeetty sure I'm the first one.

    I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks to my collaborators ghostpossum, JackCortez, Alfeetoe, and PopaBoon who joined me, insightfool25, to make this possible. Also thanks to the Fiverr folks (credited in YT description) and the artist GHOSTBAT for their help.

We've tried hunting down the specific writer who created these lyrics without luck. But Bungie, if you know, let me know!

If you're feeling Fr0st-EE and wanna help out on making this #MOTW, any support is appreciated.

My dream goal? Get it in the game. Yeah, I know, keep dreamin'. But hey, there is that Daito room in the tower. And there is a console in there just dying for an "interact" button. Bungie, I'm down if you are!

EDIT: Learned that Dan Callan is the writer of the Two-Tailed Fox lore card.

EDIT 2: Just want to thank everyone for the kind words, updoots, and awards. It means a ton and makes the work worth it. Thank you so, so much. :-)

EDIT 3: "Amazing job! I can imagine waking up on a Saturday morning and hearing this song as the opening to some Kitsune Squad cartoon and getting hype as I eat my Captain Crunch, so it's pretty much perfect" ~Dan Callan (source: Twitter)

Bungie, PLEASE bring back old PVP rewards screen from Destiny 1

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 05:21 AM PST

It's just better, period. Seeing the spinning icons then loot drop for all players was actually more exciting than I realized, and made it more interesting than what we have today. Even if the bottom guy always gets the sweetest of loot, this was a much better reward screen by far. Please work this back into PVP! We as a community need to stay on top of this request, as I feel the majority liked this in D1 and sad it changed.

Edit: I see some saying "what's the point of seeing everyone get blues or loot we've had since Y1?" Amen to that, there would be zero point in that. Theoretically, if brought back it should be with new loot or else it absolutely would be pointless. This is looking toward the future of D2, not right now as things are. Think new season, new rewards screen, new drops. Ideal in my opinion to freshen up pvp a touch.

Bungie, how about a GoS ride-along with the new sandbox changes in effect?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:12 AM PST

Now that the raid has been out quite awhile, it might clear up a lot of the endgame sandbox salt here if you were to demonstrate your thinking for play style and strats by live-streaming a raid. I really enjoyed these during D1, and now seems like a great time to do another.

Bungie your logic was to nerf snipers because they’re overused, but you didn’t buff anything in response. You’re just making the game more tedious, not more difficult.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 04:43 AM PST

    That's just poor game design.

Ever since Destiny 1 you kept talking about how you wanted to deliver a power fantasy unlike any other.

Here we are 6 years later and you're not just nerfing a weapon archetype, you're nerfing the entire player experience.

We have to be at range to do endgame content. Enemy abilities with auto tracking do ludicrous amounts of damage without cover to rotate through, and boss stomp abilities prevent us from getting close.

Bungie, don't you guys play the game too? Don't you want to experience your own power fantasy? And do you really want to make all endgame encounters take even longer?

Bungie Pls, Let us earn Shards and Prisms from more gametypes than just the Weekly Master Nightfall.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 02:41 AM PST

Let us earn Shards or Prisms in the Raids, Crucible/Gambit hitting Legendary, I'd say even weekly Banshee bounties should reward a Prism or two instead 1 measly upgrade module.

The elemental affinity change costs are going to be steep for those that already have some MW gear and farming 950s/980s for prisms and shards gets old fast. Especially costly for those actually MW some exotic armor. We need more ways to earn Shards and Prisms.

I know people wanted Nightfalls to be more rewarding and relevant but I don't think this what most wanted or meant by making it the only place to farm Prisms and Shards.

Bungie, please consider allowing fully masterworked armor to drop from Raids and/or Raid Challenges

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:56 AM PST

We have all seen the numerous posts requesting additional sources for shards/materials outside of the Nightfall, and I believe allowing fully masterworked armor to drop from Raids and/or Raid challenges would help to alleviate this issue for many players.

We already have a guaranteed source of masterworked armor from the Pit of Heresy, and I'd argue that Raids especially should also have a chance to drop masterworked armor (e.g. low chance for any encounter, guaranteed from challenges?)

In light of dmg referencing that "150 HandCannons feel to be the best in class right now, and players would like more variety"...

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 09:34 AM PST

The key here is not to nerf 150 Hand Cannons, the problem with Hand Cannons right now is that the other archetypes are meh and 150s are the most consistent. There is no individual archetype identity within the Hand Cannon family of weapons. 110s, 140s and 150s all kill with the same amount of bullets within the same general range and 180s currently don't feel like they have a place at all at least on PC. In my opinion, buffing the range and potentially damage of the other Hand Cannon archetypes would be the best way to spice up the variety of Hand Cannons used in the crucible. A range buff might even be enough, back in Season of Opulence several players ran Austringer over a Spare Rations/Rose and 110s were popular due to incredible range, high damage per shot and the ability to two tap with any damage perk.

I know the hot thing right now is to complain about Spare Rations and Mindbenders, but the fact is; these weapons aren't overpowered, they are just the most consistent weapons to combine with fast movement and aerial play styles, which happens to be the major part of Destiny's skill gap (you can roll your eyes at this all you want, but the major thing that separates good players and bad players in Destiny is movement). Hopefully in the future if Bungie decides to touch Hand Cannons again, they decide to look at the under-performing archetypes and attempt to bring them up, rather than drag down the consistent options to be equally as under-performing.

Bungie, why are we still spawning on top of enemies in Crucible?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 03:05 PM PST

On nearly every map in the game, it seems like every few games I get a respawn directly next to a member of the opposing team, who then proceeds to gun my down while my spawn animation slowly puts me down. Even on bigger maps I've respawned almost on top of an enemy countless times

It seems to be even worse with supers, die to a Dawnblade, watch your team hopelessly throw primary ammo at him, only to spawn back in right behind your team to get killed by Dawnblade a second time.

Why us this such a common issue? I'm fine with waiting to spawn just a tad bit longer if it means that I won't get insta-killed when I spawn. Yet the only time it prompts me with "searching for spawn" is when there is a completely clear and open spawn area with no one around for miles.

    Iron Banner's light level paradox

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 10:53 AM PST

    For context:

    • I'm a 1002 light level player
    • I spend most of my time in pvp but had to reluctantly play pve to get that level.
    • I don't see pvp players as being better than pve players. Everyone is free to find enjoyment in whatever way they want.

I've done some research on this sub regarding what players, or I should say reddit players as its important to remember that they are subtly different, think of light level advantages in Iron Banner and I'm kind of astonished. Most of the sub seem to think it's okay for a PVP activity to have inherently unfair advantages once a month.

Lets go over the arguments that are put forward:

    It's an endgame/pinnacle activity

Okay but it's also a PVP activity, and the players you'd think it would be made for, the core pvp players, have no way of achieving that endgame/pinnacle status. While there are many avenues to get pinnacle gear to increase your light level in PVE, there is NONE in PVP if you don't account for IB, the activity that requires you to have a high light level in the first place. Furthermore, I haven't met anyone who thought Trials of the Nine wasn't endgame material. It didn't have light level advantage. Why did light level suddenly become critical part of "endgame PVP"?

It's the point of Iron Banner

This point almost disgusts me. You're saying that the goal of this activity is to shit on lower light players? I have never heard of a game mode, in my whole life, that is designed with the express purpose of having one group of players wipe the floor with the rest of the player base. Even if in practice said group does have an advantage, it is never advertised as being by design. No game designer strives to create an unbalanced experience. To argue that it is unbalanced by design is a misunderstanding turned into fact with time. There are plenty of ways to make iron banner different. How about being a different game mode? PVP players are already forced to play control most of the time as it is the most populated playlist in the game and as such, the only one you can get a match for in a timely manner. And by the average reddit PVE player's own admission, locked zones are not enough to be the identity of the game mode. PVP players could use a change. I also think this is a disingenuous point as if you grabbed a random Iron Banner player and asked them why they plays it, they would answer by sayind something like "for pinnacle engrams/60+ stats armor" not "because I have an advantage".

It should reward end game players

If you took this out of context, I would agree, but remember that we're talking about light levels here. This implies that reddit players think that shitting on lower light levels is a reward in itself. The pinnacle gear or 60+ stats armor isn't the reward here, legal bullying is. I'm going to remind you again that PVP players cannot reach said endgame status due to not having any pinnacle reward in crucible. To everyone spouting "git gud", please change it to "grind gud" because I'm pretty sure people who spend their day in crucible "got gud" a long time ago. This argument also goes back to my thoughts on "endgame" = "high light level" not necessarily being true when it comes to PVP as shown by trials.

You don't raid with low light

Crucible does not ever deal with light level, possibly establishing the premise that it is a PVE construct and that PVP might be more oriented towards different kinds of progression (horizontal/loadouts and skill). If we introduced a raid with exlusive gear that appears once every three weeks in which players deal damage based on their competitive PVP rank, it would not go over well. This is essentially what iron banner is for PVP players. Let's also address the "low light" thing. If you look at this chart: Light Level Damage Curve

You can see that within the first 15 levels of difference, you lose about 10% damage. That's a small light difference that is very quickly achieved within half a season by PVE players. With a 0.9 damage multiplier for you and/or 1.1 for the opponent:

    • Shoulder charge/knife doesn't kill
    • Double melee doesn't kill (I think)
    • You cannot 3 tap with a 150 or 140 HC (exacerbated by the relatively recent range nerf) or similar RPM scouts. This turns a 0.8s TTK into a 1.2s TTK (for 150s). 0.4s is a huge disadvantage. Other weapons get affected the same way, HC are just a very easy way to picture the disadvantage.
    • We can infer from the previous point that if you do not get the drop on players above your light level, you cannot kill them assuming they're not potato.
    • You get two tapped by 110s (Some might argue that this is good as they're terrible otherwise right now. That's a cynical way to look at the issue I guess).
    • rapid fire snipers cannot double body (a preview of the next season I guess).
    • Le Monarque can one shot (I've seen a couple 1000s using it and it didn't really click until now).

This is just off the top of my head. Damage values in pvp are carefully calibrated to end up above 196 in a specific number of shots. Something as low as 10 lights level throws all that consideration and design out the window. We've only just began to get separate PVE/PVP balancing and this is already ruining it.

    It's always been this way

I have three counter arguments: Firstly, if you look at the chart I linked again, level advantage was vastly different in D1 and did not matter nearly as much. Secondly, it was not in effect in year 1 of D2. While some may argue that this was disliked, I would respond to that by saying that there were a large number of issues with PVP and I don't think light levels not mattering was high priority within those. This is a problem that comes up often when discussing destiny PVP. Anything from Y1 reminds players of the D2Y1 boogeyman which makes it impossible to argue that some y1 things were actually good. Many things changed at the same time, a lot for the better. But it's hard to see what actually condtributed to a better experience when so many variables were affected at the same time. Finally, why should things stay the same? There are certainly a bunch of things I wish changed in D2 but I don't give up on them just because they've been that way since launch.

So as a 1002 light level (as of this post), why am I complaining? Shouldn't I be happy that I get an easier time in PVP? You see this is where I believe the difference between the mainly PVE player and mainly PVP player is. I get my enjoyment out of improving my skill, out of growing as a player. So when I two tap a lower light level I get robbed of that feeling. For an entire week I cannot get better at the side of the game I love. Lowering my light level would just mean losing every duel so fast I wouldn't get to learn anything. That's on top of the fact that my current armor is the one I spent time improving all this time. Putting on a random piece of gear just to lower my might would drastically change my build. I also want to spend more time in PVP and less in PVE. If I only played in crucible I would be 975~980.Telling people to play normal crucible during iron banner is either being ignorant or disingenuous. The PVP population is not doing well at all. During iron banner, the light level advantage playlist is the only one that has healthy player numbers. You're asking people to wait in queue for 10 minutes just to play a match with terrible SBMM due to low population.

I love that IB brings different players into PVP. I get to see more builds, less spare rations stompees hunters, less one eyed masks, a few auto rifles, scouts and sidearms, people who want to use that week to grind ritual weapons, etc. This what the point of iron banner is: to get everyone to fight each others for a week. The gear rewards are the incentive, not the light level advantage.

What can be done? It's simple, either you remove light levels, make IB unique in a different way and piss off everyone who thinks shitting on lower light levels is fun or you give avenues to increase your light level in PVP. In which case no one has a low light level anymore which essentially makes the game mode pointless according to PVE players. This still makes the experience very random in my opinion but I wouldn't complain at that point.

edit: Some have suggested to cap light level which also does the job.

It might seem like I'm dividing PVE and PVP too much, but the game is effectively split that way. If they were coexisting, interacting activities, you would be able to do endgame PVE from playing a lot of PVP like you can do endgame PVP by doing a lot of PVE. I'm open to criticism but keep in mind the core of my argument : PVP players should be able to engage in PVP endgame.

Blacksmith Seal - The Refurbished Black Armory Shader Drop Rate needs to be Fixed

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:10 PM PST

This can't be working as intended. The only thing I need to acquire to get the Blacksmith seal at this point is Refurbished Black Armory, a Blue Shader.

For those not in the know, this shader only drops on the experimental weapons that have a chance to drop from any Forge completion, or Forge Saboteur kill. It has a very low chance to drop when dismantling one of these guns, which is odd as dismantling any item with one of the Forge specific Legendary Shaders has a guaranteed drop. I have dismantled every single Experimental Weapon I have acquired up until this point, and currently have 165 forge completions, and at least 250 Saboteur kills, and still no shader.

I have done a Flawless Scourge of the Past, I have done every challenge for that raid, I ground out the 100 frame completions, a particularly miserable task with the currently broken tower load times. I acquired and completed 6 rare bounties, 500 kills with a specific weapon at each Forge, and the only hold out to this seal is a Blue Rarity Shader.

The issue seems to be that Rare Shaders don't have a guaranteed drop on dismantle unlike their Legendary counterparts, it seems the Rare Shaders have a <5% drop chance, which can lead to some extremely frustrating RNG. These sorts of drops needs to have some sort of protection put in place when linked to a seal, or the shader needs to be converted to a Legendary to confirm a drop. I enjoyed pursuing Blacksmith, but it's not a fun experience to have to continue grinding Forge completions and Forge Saboteurs, hoping for a chance at an Experimental Weapon, and then hoping for a chance to get the shader on dismantle. From searching it seems I am not the only person in this situation either.

TLDR: Put some sort of drop protection on the Refurbished Black Armory Shader to prevent it from being the most "difficult" part of the Blacksmith Seal.

Because I'm currently on a roll that puts to shame most of the win streak emblems I see people rocking. 19 and counting, and I really think I can keep cranking up that number the way this IB week is going.

And before anyone hates on me for throwing matches: trust me, I'm both trying to shoot the bad guys and also playing the objectives to the best of my abilities! The "Capture Zones" bounty is the only one I've completed all week.

I was happier to no longer need to play Gambit than I was to finally earn Python and Hush.

Had a binge over the last couple of days to finally get those two weapons earned.

It can't be a healthy indicator of the state for part of a game when the rewards feel less rewarding than the relief of being able to now go back to ignoring that part of the game?

As much as I realise not all players will like all parts of the game equally or all of the time it still highlights that Gambit is in dire need of a freshner pass. Considering the effort they put into creating it you'd think they'd want people to still be playing it, right?

    Rasputin as raid boss?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 06:18 PM PST

If Rasputin sides with the darkness, it's not entirely out of the question. He's a very powerful golden age AI, so the vex could very well take an interest in him and might try to make some simulations on the likely hood of him joining them. It's possible that that is what Osiris saw, and is afraid that Rasputin might take their offer. As we've seen before, he can be pretty selfish and only helps guardians if it benefits him. And I might be reaching here, but the fact that he is called a warmind might be a tell. Nearly all Vex bosses have some kind of title with the word mind, like consecrated mind or sanctified mind. Since D1 I've always wondered if there was a connection, like being built using vex tech.

What I'm more interested in is what he would look like. A mixture of vex tech and warmind tech, firing javelins and summoning warsats would make for an amazing boss fight. I wish I had the artistic skill to make this, but if anyone's interested in this idea, I would LOVE to see your interpretations.

Bungie, why does Iron Truage armor drop, on average, almost 10 stat points lower than Iron Will armor..?
